IMAGO Student Film Festival have
announced that this unique student-
run event will again be hosted at
Central Huron Secondary School at
the end of April.
After a brief hiatus in the spring of
2006, IMAGO is back to continue to
encourage creativity in high school
students. During the weekend of
April 26-28, students from across
the province will come together for
inspiration and constructive
criticism from professionals in the
film industry.
IMAGO was originally a one day
Saturday event with a series of
workshops during the afternoon and
a public screening in the evening. In
the second and later years, IMAGO
has become a busy two-day
weekend event with a briefing
session for the students on the
Thursday night.
This year the focus of the
collaborative creation is on the
editing process. Students will
continue to have the opportunity to
learn by doing instead of just
listening to instructors talk.
IMAGO still features a Saturday
night public showcase of student
created films. There is also time
during the two day event for the
students to get critical feedback
from the professional instructors on
their films. As well, a small group of
students will be charged with the
task of creating a short documentary
which captures the whole IMAGO
experience.
From its start, IMAGO has
remained a non-competitive festival
that supports and encourages the
filmmakers of tomorrow. This
student film festival allows students
to build lasting friendships and to
make connections with the
professionals who are eager to share
their insights and experiences with
the students.

The Livery Film Committee is
busy dusting off the red carpet in
anticipation of the third annual
Spring Fling Film Festival (SFFF).
Film buffs are in for a special
treat this year as the festival screens
on April 13 and 14 at The Park
Theatre in Goderich. The lineup
includes two 2007 Oscar winners,
and closes with a gala screening of
Away From Her with a very special
guest.
“I saw it last year at the Toronto
International Film Festival and it’s
an absolutely beautiful film,” said
committee member Birgitte Wolf.
“We’re very lucky this year to have
one of the film’s stars, Gordon
Pinsent, as our guest at the gala
screening of the film. He is a
Canadian icon, and we are over the
moon about his arrival.”
The film is the feature-length
directorial debut of Canadian actor
Sarah Polley, and is based on Alice
Munro’s short story The Bear Came
Over the Mountain.
It stars Pinsent and Julie Christie
as a couple whose marriage is tested
when Christie’s character begins to
suffer from Alzheimer’s and moves
into a nursing home where she loses
virtually all memory of her husband.
The gala screening of the film on
April 14 does double duty, according
to Wolf. As well as raising awareness
of the disease it will also help to
raise money for its research and
support at a local level.
“The film is perfect for this
because it is about a couple who are
dealing with Alzheimer’s and the
sort of loss and feeling of
estrangement that the husband feels
when the wife develops
Alzheimer’s,” said Wolf. “So besides
raising money it will also raise
awareness of the condition and it’s a
great film.”
Wolf explained that a percentage
of the proceeds from the screening
will go directly to the Alzheimer
Society of Huron County, and the
films distributor will match the
donation in full.
“The way it has been designed to
work is that we pay a certain per cent
of the gate receipts to the
Alzheimer’s Society and the
distributor will match those funds. It
goes directly to the local group, so
the money stays in the community.”
The SFFF is in the midst of
carving out its place in the
community line-up of big things to
look out for each year. Wolf said that
people throughout Huron are
beginning to anticipate its arrival,
and even planning getaway
weekends around it.
“I have people calling me from all
around the county, and from places
like London and Stratford who plan
to come up for the weekend to take
in the films,” said Wolf. “It’s getting
to be something that people really
look forward to.”
Advance tickets are now available
