Even with this being only their
first year in the league the Saugeen
Maitland team won the SWGHL
PeeWee A championship this
weekend.
They took 5 1/2 points out of a
possible 10 in a very close final
series against London.
The PeeWee team is made up
of local girls from the Bruce,
Grey and Huron county area
and outplayed teams from
Chatham, Windsor and final-
ly London to win the champion-
ship.
London took the silver and
Windsor the bronze.
The Saugeen team is now off to
the Women's Provincial
Championship in Toronto the
weekend of April 13-15.
The Blyth Atom Girls concluded
their season in Keady, March 18
with a win in the consolation final.
They opened the tournament on
Saturday with an overtime loss to
Chatsworth by a 4-3 score. Scoring
for Blyth were Ashley Higgins with
two and Mackenzie Nesbitt. Assists
went to Chloe Middegaal,
Mackenzie McGavin, Kaitlyn
Michie and Autumn Wightman.
The second game was against
Tiverton and Ashley Higgins stole
the show scoring all four Blyth
goals in a 4-0 romp. The assists
went to Chloe Middegaal with
three, Kathryn Chalmers with two
and Amy Boyce. Lindsay Shiell
picked up the shutout.
The consolation final was a
nailbiter against Saugeen Shores.
The first period saw the opposition
score the only goal.
The Blyth girls kept pressing and
finally got the tying goal mid-way
through the second period on a nice
passing play from Middegaal to
Higgins standing at the side of the
net. Late in the period Middegaal
set up Nesbitt for the go-ahead goal.
The third period was tense from
start to finish. The Blyth defense
anchored by McGavin, Leanne
Plunkett and Chalmers provided
solid support to Shiell in net, to shut
the door and capture the win by a 2-
1 score.
The girls received their trophy
and medallions. Tournament
convener Jane Harkness presented
the game MVP award to Blyth’s
Teresa Atkinson.
The team ended the season with
an overall record of 11 wins, 14
losses and one tie. This was a very
solid record considering the girls
had to endure a six-game losing
streak in November and December.
The season also included a
runner-up finish in the Mount Forest
Girls Classic Tournament in early
January following a loss in the final
to a very tough Seaforth squad.
Morgan Howson, Samantha Kerr,
Sydney Wightman and Shelby
Higgins assisted throughout the
year to fill in when other players
were unavailable.
What a kick
While parents listened to Dr. Colin Sturdy talking about
Responsible Kids - Really, children enjoyed a number of
activities including karate and dancing. The event was held
at Grey Central school on Thursday through a grant from
the Ministry of Education. The hope was to bring parents
and children together in a school event. The evening
began with pizza. Here Grade 5/6 teacher Marcy Aarssen
demonstrates with volunteer MacKenzie Atkinson. (Bonnie

The Tuesday ladies scores at the
Wingham Curling Club indicate just
how close the teams are as two
games had to go extra rocks to
decide the winners. Kayla Bishop
downed Marg Moffat and Debbie
Gammie made the extra rocks count
to get the victory over Sandra
Morrison.
In another close one Ann
Crawford eked out a 6-5 win over
Amy Miller. Cathy Donnelly was on
the wrong end of a 6-2 score in a
game with Mary Henry. This was the
final end of the last draw with the
Amy Miller rink winning the draw
with 81 points. Other members of
Amy’s rink were Ginette Burke and
Donna Bieman.

The Tuesday competitive league
wrapped up the curling season with a
light lunch and crowning of the
year’s winner. The winning rink was
skipped by Aart DeVos with Jim
Ross as vice, Murray McNichol as
second and Tim Tolton as lead.

In the Thursday mixed league Cam
Alton downed Doug Miller 11-4
while Elliott Miller doubled up on
Bill McDonald with a 10-5 win. In a
close one Mike Cottrill edged Kayla
Bishop 9-8.

Robertson 9, Lloyd Wheeler 8 and
Nelson Frank 8, Irving Elliott 7.

Going into the final day of the
daytime league Thursday, all eyes
were on ice one as Bruce
Robertson’s and Stewart Leedham’s
rinks were waging a rock battle. The
winner would be crowned the final
draw champion. With a big six count
in the fifth end Stewart coasted to a
13-5 win. Both teams ended with 11
wins and two losses, but the
Leedham rink with a higher plus
captured the crown. Members of the
winning rink skip Stewart Leedham,
vice Dianne Simpson, second Verna
Taylor and lead Merle Underwood.
Other scores for the day were: Jim
Coultes 6, Lloyd Wheeler 4; Glenn
McMichael 12, Ivan Dow 4, Don
Henry 17, Les Shaw 11; Irving
Elliott 13, Ron McMichael 1; Mac
Inglis 8, Nelson Frank 6 and Wendell
Stamper 13, Norm Fairles 3.
The daytime league will be
holding their year-end banquet and
presentation of awards on Tuesday,
April 17.

The Belgrave league wrapped up
their season on Thursday evening.
Although it is the Belgrave league it
was a skip from Blyth, Bruce
Howson playing with all the skills of
Glenn Howard that won the final
draw. Members of Howson’s rink
were Jim Ross, Larry Johnston and
Jenn Elston.

On Sunday, 32 turned out for
Bruce’s Ice-B-Gone bonspiel and
there were laughs galore as
experienced and first-time curlers
attempted to weave their way
through eight ends of curling which
tested to the limit one’s curling
skills.
On first end only those rocks on
the left side of the house counted and
with extra pebble on the right side
and no pebble on the left the rocks
behaved in an extraordinary manner.
The second end was played under
similar ice conditions but the hack
was placed at the left side of the hog
line.
The third and fourth ends were on
ice two with four obstacles placed
just off the four-foot centre line. The
first obstacle, was a Christmas tree to
hide behind when you made a bad
shot. The second was a chair to rest
on, the third a candle to warm cold
hands and the fourth a pair of curling
shoes glued to the ice at the hog line.
The fifth end both teams threw to
the kid’s rings halfway down the
ice.
The sixth end had both teams
throw to the kids’ rings with blue
rocks throwing from one end and the
red rocks from the opposite end.
Seventh and eight ends were
regular curling on ice specially
prepared by Bruce Pewtress to
represent arena ice. Understand
under the darkness of the early dawn
our iceman took on the role of Toller
Cranston and roughed up the ice
with skate marks as he performed
triple “Sow-Cows” as only a Huron
county farmer can do.
It was a day of fun, lots of laughs
topped off with lunch.
