The Citizen, 2007-04-05, Page 7Justin Trudeau, the son of former
prime minister Pierre Trudeau, who
recently announced his desire to
follow his famous father into
politics, will be at Mitchell District
High School (MDHS) on Saturday,
May 5 to meet with students and
address a gathering of parents and
community members.
Bringing it Home: A Celebration
of Cultivating Character, scheduled
to run from 12:30 p.m. - 4 p.m., was
organized by the Avon Maitland
District School Board’s parent
engagement committee.
Using funding provided by
the provincial government when
it directed boards to create
the committees last year, the
Avon Maitland group decided
to invite Trudeau, a one-time
teacher and much sought-after
speaker.
According to Avon Maitland
director of communications Steve
Howe, the parent engagement
committee is made up largely of
members of school councils from
across the board.
Howe says the committee met
several times through the year todiscuss what to do with theprovincial funding and “decidedthey wanted to create an event that
celebrates the board’s ‘cultivating
character’ initiative.”
Under the initiative, the board
worked with students, parents and
community members to come up
with a list of desired positive
character traits, and now aims to
incorporate the promotion of these
traits into existing education
programming.
For Bringing it Home, a series of
displays about the initiative will be
placed in the MDHS gymnasium.
Tentatively, a Cultivating Character
Cabaret will run from 1 p.m. - 2
p.m., with people involved in the
initiative performing funny or
meaningful skits or other
entertainment.
There will then be a break, and
Trudeau is scheduled to take the
stage at 3 p.m. for a half-hourkeynote address followed by a half-hour question and answer session.“Of course, if a federal election is
called before May 5, we’ll lose
Justin Trudeau,” commented Howe.
Trudeau recently earned the
federal Liberal nomination in a
Montreal-area riding.
Admission to the event is free, but
seating is limited.
Howe says preference will be
given to parents of students within
the Avon Maitland system, but added
it’s very likely a significant number
of community members will also be
welcomed.
Those interested in attending
should register on the board’s
website, at www.yourschools.ca .
Howe says the event will take
place even if Trudeau is called away
by an election call, and that a back-
up speaker has been identified by the
parent engagement committee.

THE EDITOR,
As a result of a motion that I
introduced during the Feb. 7
meeting of the North Huron Twp.
council on Tuesday, April 10 a
committee of the whole meeting
will be held April 10 at 7 p.m. at the
Blyth arena.
Amongst other things, this
meeting will provide the people of
Blyth with an opportunity to see the
municipal council at work without
having to travel to Wingham.
The purpose of this letter is to
encourage each and every resident
of the ward to consider attending the
meeting. Councillors and staff
regularly make decisions that
impact on the day-to-day lives of
Blyth residents. Items ranging from
property taxes and garbage
collection, to arena hours of
operation and rental costs, fall under
council’s direct control.
I would expect that the residents
of Blyth have opinions on many of
these issues and I would welcome
their attendance, and even their
participation at the meeting.
Those interested in attending may
do so without making a reservation.
However, groups and individuals
wishing to make a formal
presentation to council must make
arrangements in advance, with the
clerk. You may reach him by calling
519-357-3550.
In closing, I would again
encourage the people of Blyth to
consider attending this important
meeting.
North Huron council, like all
governments, can only function
effectively with the involvement of
the people they seek to represent.
Sincerely,
Greg McClinchey
Blyth Ward Councillor.
