It was a great week at the Brussels
Legion Branch.
The general meeting was held with
only nine comrades in attendance.
Correspondence included a reminder
to watch a show on Vimy Ridge
called from Heaven to Hell. It will
air April 8 at 6 p.m. on the History
Channel and is a great recall on how
the battle of Vimy Ridge was fought.
It includes references to three
Goderich-area veterans.
Comrades in hospital include
Isabel Workman in Seaforth and
Gordon Workman in Maitland
Manor for respite care. Get-well
wishes to them both.
The Thursday night darts had 12
people taking aim at the boards. The
first-place finish went to John
Stadelmann and Devon Josling.
Second place went to Norm Dobson
and John Harrison. High starts went
to Heather Little with 80 and Catrina
Josling shooting 72. High shot was
by Roger McHardy with a 121.
The Branch was successfully
represented at District public
speaking in Paisley on Saturday.
Junior speaker, Jacob McGavin,
placed first again and will now
advance to the area speaking contest
in Creemore near the end of April.
The Zone is C1 and all the
advancing speakers are from the
Zone CI. The senior speaker is Ryley
Neil from Goderich, primary
speaker Phaedra Scott from Blyth
and the intermediate speaker was
Matt Durnin from Lucknow area.
There are four zones in the District,
so four speakers in each division.
Attending to encourage and
support Jacob was youth chairman
of Branch 218, John Lowe, Jeff,
Shannon and Teagan McGavin, Neil
and Marie McGavin, Bob Rowe,
Larry Rice, Peggy Lachance, Judy
Hahn, and Berva Rice.
Congratulations Jacob.
Saturday was also District
competition for darters from Branch
218. The mixed dart team of Ron
Schmidt, Eric Ross, Anita and Sara
Little captured third place. Eric Ross
and Anita Little captured first place
in the doubles competition to be held
in Gananoque in June.
Comrades Sandra Josling, Jo-Ann
McDonald and Heather Dauphin
were busy Wednesday through to
Friday getting everything ready for
the silent auction on the weekend. It
was a great turnout with 153 donated
items from Comrades and friends of
the Legion. There was a wonderful
array from baking to garden items to
tools to woodcrafts. There were over
80 bidders to browse through and
make bids with at least 40 trying to
get in that last bid at 4 p.m.
The Friday night supper of lasagna
had a good crowd. There is no
supper this Friday - Good Friday -
and the Branch will be closed. The
next supper will be roast pork.
Elections of officers is held in the
month of April. The nominating
committee reports that all offices are
filled but assistants for many
committees would be nice to have. If
you feel you could assist on the
poppy, sports, house, canteen, youth
or social committees, contact the
Branch, Sandra or Jo-Ann.
PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2007.
Spring is in the air and that alone
brings out lots of good things in
nature and people. The sidewalks are
once again busy with walkers and
bikers and strollers and a few games
for good measure. It’s meet and
greet time again after the winter
weather.
Amazement is mine every time I
really look at my flowerbeds. A
touch of green is soon followed by a
tip of leaf and after a little sun with
its warmth a bloom is soon in view.
It still and always boggles my mind
that the dead fields and beds of
winter spring forth with life and
growth. No wonder Easter is
celebrated in spring.
Hello from Nancy MacDonald.
We did the family and friend catch
up lately. Time is an interesting
concept. I find that when I speak
with old friends, the years just
disappear and conversations that
could have taken place years ago are
very relevant. By the time we givechapter and verse on thewhereabouts of the long ago littlepeople and their attachments, memories flood in. I’m happy to report that all theExel kids are busy and find. Nancy is well and keeping busy as usualand as our usual, we found several
areas of life that caused great
laughter.
If music is food for the soul, Blyth
Festival Singers and the Huron Harp
Ensemble offered a feast for the soul
on Sunday afternoon. Once again
Robert Blackwell and Sharon
Johnston offered the musicians a
challenge and they displayed their
musical talents in fine form. I’m not
sure I’ve ever heard four harps
together. It was wonderful and hope
to hear them again soon.
Plans are underway for the
Homecoming and if you want up-to-
date details for the celebration on the
last weekend of July the committee
has set up a website just for you.
This is a good place to visit:
www.brusselshomecoming2007.ca Get
the facts and make your plans so you
won’t be disappointed next July.
Dig out your Easter bonnet and get
ready for the celebrations on the
weekend. May the joy of Easter
morning be yours throughout the
year.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
