By Zach Drost On March 23, the 4-H Chinchilla Club met at the home of Ray and Barb Storey. The meeting opened with the 4-H pledge, then the minutes were read. The roll call was “What do you do with your chinchillas daily?” Some examples or answers were: feed them and give fresh water. Members talked about how to catch them like trying to trap them with a fishing net or show cage. It is important to handle them with care as you don’t want to pull out their fur. They also talked about how they catch chinchillas and take care of them on the Storey’s ranch. At the next meeting they talked about chinchilla ranches. The roll call was how many ranches there are between now and 1990. Now there are only 50 ranches and only six make a good living off them. In 1990 there were 550 chinchilla ranches. The pelt market has dropped over the years, so several ranches have closed. The leaders told how they take care of their baby chinchillas. They also talked about other kinds of chinchillas, like the beige, violet and white. These are very popular with the pet market. The Storeys also told us how they took care of their ranch when the had over 1,000 chinchillas. Members learned how to comb the chinchillas with a special comb. Will Fleming, one of the older members, gave a combing demonstration and showed how to groom them. They all practised combing a chinchilla. The next meeting is on April 14.
