A proposed mandate for the Blyth
arena board was tabled at North
Huron council’s March 19 meeting
until the board has a chance to
comment.
The mandate was developed by
councillor Greg McClinchey and
presented for council consideration.
It states that the board meet on an
on-going and regular basis to review
and critique the operations of the
Blyth arena as well as the peripheral
grounds and facilities. The board
would make recommendations to
council that would improve
operations and would help focus and
foster community support on
projects of interest.
Councillor Murray Nesbitt, who
had for many years been the council
rep on the board questioned the need
for this. “They have gone along until
now doing a great job. I don’t know
if this is necessary.”
He also worried about the
additional responsibility. “It was
always the arena and the hall. I don’t
know if they want to concern
themselves with the grounds and
other buildings.
Director of recreation/facilities
Pat Newson explained that the
change was to hopefully bring
representation onto the board from
other groups. “We would like to see
a Thresher representative. We feel
we don’t communicate with them as
well as we might.”
She also noted that the grounds
and the community centre are
becoming more of a “married
entity”.
“Separating that may be going
backwards for purposes of
marketing,” she said. “(This
mandate) certainly wouldn’t change
the focus of the group. The great
thing about them is that they have
always seen the small things that
needed attention.”
With McClinchey not present at
the meeting to explain if what the
board’s feeling was about the
mandate or if they were aware of it
as yet, council was a little reluctant
to proceed.
“I just hope they don’t feel they
are getting a whole lot of rules laid
on them,” said Nesbitt.
“That is my concern too,” added
councillor Arnold Taylor.
Newson too felt it was better to
wait. “I would feel more
comfortable taking it back to them
with council’s feedback.”
