At the March 19 meeting of North Huron council, director of recreation/facilities Pat Newson said the challenge is to find a balance between the bottom line and user satisfaction. She met with ice user groups March 7 in Blyth and Wingham witha package regarding rates andpolicies. “Blyth accepted as is, butWingham had concerns about the block ice,” said Newson. “What they’re saying is there’s not enough differential to make block ice palatable. They would rather pay the $10 extra and be able to cancel.” Blocked ice runs from Oct. 1 to Feb. 3. To receive the blocked ice discount price, users must book the same hour of ice the same day eachand every week. These are named onthe ice request form. Cancellations can be made at nocharge with more than six days notice. Non-blocked ice users do not have the discounted price. No charge cancellation is 15 days or more notice. Newson said she had contacted a number of other arenas and found that many do have blocked ice. “The majority are moving toward thattrend.”In April, the same rate will applyfor all groups. “Right now we haveover $6,000 in revenue for April. It’s a tough month to know when we can cut the ice off though.” “If I could predict the weather and what groups will need to use the ice, I’d have an easier job.” Councillor Arnold Taylor expressed a concern that organized groups were taking away the opportunities for public skating. “Ifwe don’t have programs like that, thepublic as a whole doesn’t get to usethe facility,” he said. While noting that public skating doesn’t bring in the kind of revneue that hockey does, she did, however agree with Taylor. “I agree our role is to provide recreation to the masses.” Huron East now has its future constructed for them. Councillors all received a summary of building needs for their municipality, courtesy of B.M. Ross and Associates Ltd. all with accompanying costs. The building needs were based on health and safety or structural repair needs, preventative maintenance needs (from low to high priority), interior decorating-related needs and mechanical or equipment needs. With several building needs having price tags listed as unknown, the bottom line for all the work is $1,118,700. There is no definitive timeline for the work to be carried out. However, the investigation suggested that any tasks that fell under the categories health and safety or structural repair and high priority preventative maintenance needs should be completed within the next year or two. The only building in Brussels with several needs falling into these two categories is the Brussels medical dental building. The sidewalk approach from the parking lot is classified in the investigation as a health and safety or structural issue, while cracks in the brick, the eavestrough and the door frame are high priority preventative maintenance. However, in terms of cost, Brussels may have some large projects in the coming years. The Brussels Library is one, the BMG Community Centre has several costs with unknown amounts in addition to costs totalling over $100,000 for the parking lot and header piping alone. The biggest collective expense in the investigation is the Seaforth and District Community Centre, with a price tag well over $200,000. The report is touted as “fairly complete” but goes on to say that as the asset management plan is developed, there could be additional costs for future maintenance. Meeting to focus on making the most of ice surfaces Complete set Brussels Legion president Jo-Ann McDonald presented a cheque for PeeWee hockey team jerseys on behalf of the Legion to Mike Vader of Minor Hockey. By Bonnie GroppThe Citizen After a very successful registration last week, Brussels Minor Soccer is now prepared to offer its soccer program to three year olds. In the past, it has only been offered to JK-eligible children, but now it will be offered to children born in 2004. They will be known as Kiddie Kickers, the houseleague program. Soccer is a great physical activity that doesn’t require expensive equipment. In Kiddie Kickers, you just need running shoes. For travel teams, children require soccer shoes, shin pads, and socks to cover the shin pads. Anyone still wanting to register for travel teams, has until April 5. Deadline for Kiddie Kickers is May 1. Interested parents need to call Susan Jared at 519-887-8688. Thanks to new federal government tax laws, there is a child physical fitness credit, applicable to the 2007 tax year.
