Madill girls get OFSAA bronze
Through hard work and dedication
the F.E. Madill girls hockey team
had the opportunity to represent
their school and communities in a
sport they love, at the highest high
school level, the OFSAA A/AA
Championship (All Ontario). These
championships took place March
20-22 in Belleville/Trenton.
Travelling to Belleville by bus on
Monday, March 19 and meeting up
with other team members who had
just landed at the Toronto airport
from a soccer tournament in Hawaii,
the girls settled in nicely with a 2-0
win against St. Joseph’s on Tuesday
morning. Both goals went to Kelsey
VanderVeen unassisted and the
shutout went to goaltender Brianne
Wheeler.
Game two on Tuesday evening
was another 4-1 win against
Timmins with Tammy Freiburger
scoring all four goals and Wheeler
receiving the win from the net.
Assists went to Kendall Whitfield,
Allison Quennell, Sheila Kuik,
Marlee Alton and Karla Dickson.
At 8 a.m. on Wednesday it was
another victory for game three
against Bayside Secondary. Wheeler
was credited with the win and
scoring the goals in this 5-2 effort
Well done

On Monday, March 19 the Blyth
Bantam Rep hockey team travelled
to Ayton to finally play their WOAA
championship series.
The game started out in Blyth’s
favour with them ending the first
period ahead 3-0 with goals scored
by Tyler Stevenson, Dan Dery and
Dallas Pennington. Assists were by
Pennington, Adam Cronin, Matt
Chalmers and Stevenson.
The second period however was a
different story with Ayton catching
up to Blyth very quickly because of
unwanted penalties from the
Bulldogs.
The team did come out in the third
period ready to win and the game
ended in a 7-4 victory for Blyth.
Scoring were Dery, Pennington,
Chalmers and Stevenson. Assists
were by Matt Popp, Cronin,
Chalmers, Dery and Michael
McDowell.
Sheldon Reid once again played a
great game between the pipes.
Game two was held in Blyth the
very next night with the boys ready
to win and stay out of the penalty
box. The game was fairly one-sided
this time with Blyth winning 3-1.
Scoring were Cronin, Dery and
McDowell with assists from
Pennington, Cronin, Stevenson and
Dery.
This win gave the team the title of
Bantam WOAA champs.
The Bantams weren’t done with
hockey yet, however. On Saturday
they headed to Tiverton where they
started their final series of the year.
Blyth managed to win the game 5-3
but Tiverton gave the team a good
run of it with some heated moments
near the end of the game.
On Sunday Tiverton came to Blyth
hoping to win but the Bulldogs
wanted it more. Blyth dominated the
play winning the game 6-0.
The Blyth Bantams were the
winners of the Neilson Division
trophy for group playoffs. It was a
good way to end the season.
On his own
A Blyth Bantam Rep has a clear field as he moves up from
centre ice. The game was a WOAA final against Normanby
March 20, and Blyth skated away with the victory and the
championship. The final score was 3-1. (Vicky Bremner photo)

The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
PeeWee A team travelled to London
Sunday and came away with a 4-2
win.
Goals for Saugeen were scored by
Taylor Gilkinson, Laura MacKenzie,
Laura Stewart and Sara Gossell.
Assists went to Marcie Landman and
Laura Irwin with two, Gilkinson and
Dollee Meigs.
The girls now have a stranglehold
on the South-Western Girls Hockey
League (SWGHL) finals with the
final game against London scheduled
for Saturday, March 31 in Howick at
1:30 p.m.
Playoff victories continue
