as good at cards as others, so
will not advance. Congrats to
them for their efforts.
The Zone public speaking
event was held in Kincardine
on Saturday with three
representing Brussels Legion.
It was a great day reports
youth chairman John Lowe,
with all three Brussels
speakers placing in the top
three of the category out of 13
speakers.
In the primary or
storytelling, Grades 1-3, the
Brussels Legion speaker from
Grey Central School, Alida
Swart, placed third with her
story I Wish My Brother Was
A Dog. The junior division,
Grades 4-6, speaker from
Brussels Public School was
Jacob McGavin. He placed
first with his speech Making a
Difference. Jacob advances to
District competition in
Paisley this weekend.
In the intermediate, Grades
7-9 division, Mercedes Ten
Pas from Brussels Public
School placed second with
her story, Catchy Phrases. It
was a fantastic result for the
talented speakers from the
Brussels area.
Congratulations to all and
good luck to Jacob in the next
level.
There were 359 entriesbetween the two schools ofour area that culminated in
nine speakers from each
school to speak at the Branch
level competition.
At Zone level, there are 13
speakers in a division and at
District level there will be
four speakers in each division.
The Branch hosted
Saturday afternoon euchre
with 12 1/2 tables of players
vying for top prize.
The lucky winners were
Tom and Eileen Sloan, 85
points; Glen Sellers and Ed
Stewart, 74 points; and Jean
Bewley and Elunid McNair,
72 points.
Not-so-lucky low prize
went to Marie Stute and
Joanne Machan with 42
points. The lone hand prizes
went to Mabel Wheeler and
Forrest Whittard.
The John Heaman Band
played to a full house at the
Sunday night dance.
Comrade Jo-Ann
McDonald presented minor
hockey president Mike Vader
with a second donation to
complete payment for the new
PeeWee hockey jerseys that
were purchased this year. The
Brussels Legion has
sponsored the PeeWee team
with new jerseys and
tournament entries for many
years now and is pleased to
continue this tradition of
community support for youth.
