Brussels Atom Local League
played against Teeswater Friday
night. Teeswater scored early in the
first period.
Scott Dolmage evened the score
before the buzzer.
The second period was fierce
between the two sides with no
points added to the board.
The third period saw several shots
on net, several penalties, and a goal
on each side. The Brussels goal was
scored by Luke McCutcheon.
A ten-minute sudden death
overtime saw no more goals and the
game was left at a 2-2 tie.
Saturday saw the team face-off
against Mount Forest. This game
was between two evenly-matched
teams.
Brussels made 26 shots on net
with just three goals scored.
Lexi Smith got two, and Nic
Zwep scored one. Assists went to
Smith, Reece McArter and Luke
McCutcheon.
Mount Forest made 14 shots on
Brussels goalie Austin Johnston,
with four bulging the twine, to skate
away with a 4-3 win.
The Brussels Tykes finished their
hockey season on a high note after
beating the Tyke parents 10-4.
Scoring for Brussels Tykes were
Ronan Jared, Cody Harding, Noah
Terpstra with a hattrick, Delayna
Smith, Logan Kellington, Avery
McArter and Konrad McArter.
Assists went to Terpstra, Kailey
Wheeler, Smith and McArter.
Several parents were tripping,
hooking, holding and body
checking with no penalties called.
After the game, everyone enjoyed
pizza upstairs.
The Wingham Bulls travelled to
Durham on March 16 to play the
Thundercats in game five of their
WOAA Senior A hockey series.
The Bulls were facing elimination
and started strongly with Kirk
Stewart opening the scoring,
assisted by Shawn Walker at 3:01 of
the first period. The Bulls continued
to dominate play in the first period
until the Thundercats tied the game
late in the period with a powerplay
goal.
The Thundercats scored a
shorthanded goal in the second
period and added two more goals in
the third period to record a 4-1
victory.
The Thundercats captured the
semi-final series four games to one
and will now play the Ripley Wolves
in the Senior A final. The Tavistock
Royals and the Elora Rocks will
meet in the Senior AA finals.
Edged out
The Brussels Atoms were dealt a tough blow last week by
Mount Forest with a 4-3 loss. Brussels overcame a two-
goal deficit to tie the game and eventually took the lead,

Blyth’s best
Products of Blyth Minor Hockey, both young and old, took to
the ice in an alumni game last Sunday. The event was a
fundraiser for the association, and a successful one, which
raised over $5,000 for the league. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
The Brussels Atoms Reps are still
going strong.
The team travelled to Wiarton and
had a good game.
The hosts went ahead early due to
two goals, but Brussels came back to
tie it and add one for the go-ahead
goal. Lighting the lamp were
Hayden TenPas, Brock McLean and
Brody TenPas. Assists went to Lexi
Smith, Jordyn Sholdice and Anthony
Vader.
Wiarton never gave up and came
back to score a few more.
Brock McLean, off a pass from
Reece McArter finished Brussels
scoring.
Matt McNichol had a good game
in Brussels net. However, the game
ended in a 6-4 score for Wiarton.
Next it was the Mildmay
tournament. The team faced off first
against Clifford. Brussels got off to a
slow start, but finally got on the
scoreboard in the second with B.
TenPas bulging the twine. He later
added another, then McLean and
Mitchell Kellington each scored to
give the squad a 4-0 whitewash.
B. TenPas was named MVP.
Brussels played Creemore in the
second game. It was a good contest
but Brussels fell short by two goals.
McLean, Vader and H. TenPas
scored in this outing.
It was another solid effort for
McNichol.
Smith was named MVP.
In the skills competition, Brussels
came out on top, with special credit
given to the TenPas brothers,
Kellington and McNichol.

In Monday men’s curling at the
Wingham club Les Shaw downed
Bruce Robertson 7-4 and Stewart
Leedham eked out a 6-5 win over
Barry Simpson.

On Tuesday ladies night play all
eight teams were in action. Kayla
Bishop sure had full rock control as
she whipped Debbie Gammie 12-2.
Amy Miller registered another
victory downing Marg Moffat 7-4.
The other two games were close
ones as Ann Crawford edged Mary
Henry 4-3 and Sandra Morrison
was a 6-5 winner over Cathy
Donnelly.

The Tuesday competitive league
started playoffs. Aart DeVos
defeated Earl Fitch 12-8. Calvin
Ruttan downed Rob Middleton 7-4.
Lefty Don Edgar was in fine form
with a 10-1 victory over Russ
Taylor and Shawn Cottrill started
the playoffs with a 7-5 win over
Bill DeVos.

It was playoff action in the
Wednesday mixed league. Both
girl skips registered wins as
Tammy Adams defeated Steve
Burke 7-5 and Leanne Elston was a
giant killer registering a 7-4 victory
over Earl Fitch. In a close one John
Dailleboust edged Aart DeVos 8-7.
The other game was a high scoring
encounter as Dean Newson came
through with an 11-5 win over
Wayne Horton.

In Friday night action all games
went down to the final rock as
Barry Simpson defeated Bill
McDonald 7-6 and Wayne
Waechter edged Hugh Clugston 5-
4. In the other game there were lots
of rocks on the rings as Shawn
Cottrill was a 10-9 winner over
Lynn Hickey.

In the Thursday mixed league
both Bishop teams went down in
defeat as Cam Alton downed Kevin
8-6 and Elliott Miller recorded an
8-3 win over Kayla Bishop. In the
third game Bill McDonald was in
fine form with a 10-6 victory over
Doug Miller.

In order to catch up on snow days
the Belgrave curlers played five
end double headers. In this draw
the skips are demoted to leads and
get their feel of the brooms and the
sweep, sweep urging from new
skips.
In the first five-end games the
results were: Ruth Olson 6, Dave
Linton 4; Jim Scott 7, Joyce
Vincent 1; Bruce Howson 8,
Murray Vincent 3 and Linda Meier
and Cathy Goetz played to a six-all
draw.
In the night cap five, both
Vincents came through with wins
as Joyce skunked Ruth Olson 6-0
and Murray Edged Jim Scott 6-5.
Bruce Howson got his second win
of the night with an 8-2 victory
over Linda Meier and Dave Linton
edged Cathy Goetz 7-6.

The final regular season points
for the competitive league were
released with the Aart DeVos rink
on top with 258.5 points. Calvin
Ruttan was in second with 216.5
point. Other teams were Shawn
Cottrill 187.5, Don Edgar 176,
Russ Taylor 155.8, Bill DeVos
152.3, Rob Middleton 139.5 and
Earl Fitch in the cellar with 136.5
points.

A very successful country curlers
bonspiel was held on St. Patrick’s
Saturday with teams on the ice
from Goderich, Ripley, Teeswater,
Wroxeter and Wingham.
Several curlers showed their Irish
ancestry with the wearing of the
green.
In the early draw it was the
Ritchie family taking top honours.
Skipped by Krista Ritchie of
Ripley the team included and Mel
and Krista’s aunt and uncle Elva
and Lynn Hickey of Wingham.
The late draw was won by a team
from Goderich. John Orr, Judy
McLean, Faye Ribey and Hugh
McBurney.
The Richie rink was the overall
winners gaining the crown by a
mere three-quarters of a point over
the Goderich rink.
