March Break should have meant a
break for the cadets, but not this
year. The new Cadet Drill team held
practice at Brussels Legion from
Monday to Thursday every
afternoon.
The competition they are
practising for is in mid-April, so it’s
crunch time. This is the first time
Brussels has competed and they are
aiming to do well, so practise,
practise, practise.
There were 11 darters at the
Thursday night darts. The first-place
finisher was John Harrison.
Finishing second was pair Marlene
Little and Norm Dobson. The high
shot was 120 by both Tim Harrison
and Heather Little. The high stars
were shot by Sharon Robbins with
73 and Tim with 106. John Harrison
had the high finish of 112.
Friday night’s supper was Irish
stew with a few dressing in the hue
of green. This week will be pork
chops.
Saturday’s pub night, with wings,
fries and meat draws was a great
success. There was a full house on
hand to enjoy Joshua Gropp and his
music.
The cooks included Jim and
Christopher Brown and Rick and Jo-
Ann McDonald. Great helpers
downstairs were Lisa Glanville,
Anne Pelletier, Sandra and Catrina
Josling.
A great time was enjoyed when
karaoke started thanks to Mike and
Michelle Dauphin and of course, all
the wonderful singers in attendance.
Sunday was a big day with the
Branch hosting the Zone C1 spring
convention. There were nearly 60
comrades of the 13 branches in the
zone, plus 10 zone council and
approximately 15 special guests.
Normal Zone business was
conducted and elections were held.
Elected was new Zone
Commander was Comrade Stew
Taylor from Hensall. The new
Deputy Zone Commander is
Comrade Peggy Griffin from
Kincardine.
There were special presentations
and a gift presented to past Zone
Commander Shirley Chalmers.
Many stayed for the dinner
following the closing of the
convention. Kitchen help doing an
excellent job included Deb Cann,
Judy Lee, Sharon Robbins, Anne
Pelletier and Mabel Willis. Also
helping with cleanup were Lisa
Glanville and Jo-Ann McDonald.
Contributing to the success of the
day were Comrades Ross Bennett
and Lisa as flagbearers, Rick
McDonald and Allyson Cardiff as
ticket sellers and bartenders.
The silent auction is fast
approaching so pledge sheets and
items can start arriving at the Branch
anytime.
The general meeting is Tuesday,
March 27 at 8 p.m.
The robins have been sighted. There were seven sitting all togetherin a tree in Grey Twp. In southBrussels there were a few more thanthat gathered in a tree just waiting tobe admired. Do you suppose they’relike us and gather as they travel. Orperhaps they were exchanging theirvacation stories as they had a littlebreak.
Anyway they are here and that’s a
very good sign. At least it helps
make the Monday snow a littlewarmer.Another sign of spring is Guidecookies. The Brussels Guide groupswill be visiting many homes onSaturday morning selling theircookies. Have your cash with asmile ready to greet the youngpeople.Guiding is one of the traditional
organizations that has been offering
skills and leadership to young ladies
for years. It remains relevant and
important to community. So show
your support. The cookies can be
shared with the neighbours if you
shouldn’t eat them all yourself.
Spring always brings good things
to see and do. The Blyth Festival
Singers have been working hard to
present their latest
accomplishments. Get your ticket
for their April 1 program to be held
at the theatre in Blyth. I’m sureSheila or Agnes will find you one orthree. The folks at the United Church areoffering you a very pleasant eveningSunday, May 27. Dinner and musicboth very enjoyable can be had bygetting your ticket from DonChesher, Audrey Cardiff or JeanDavidson. Your ticket will allow you
to spend an evening with nice
people, great food and the musical
talents of Terry Sumsion.
The tickets are moving, some sold
already as Mother’s Day presents so
make your plans now.
School routine has returned with
all the neat things of March Break a
memory. There is something
calming about routine but the breaks
are just as good.
Enjoy your world.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Wings night
The Brussels Legion hosted a St. Patrick’s Day celebration
that included a meat draw, karaoke, entertainment by local
musician Joshua Gropp and beer and wings for dinner.
Upstairs the cooks, among Jim Brown, were hard at work,
while the rest had fun downstairs. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Judie Glen was the guest speaker
at the Majestic Women’s Institute
on March 14 at the Brussels library.
She was introduced by Edna
McLellan.
Mrs. Glen is the owner of the
Glen Farm, which sells specialty
oils and jams. She explained that an
herb is not a seed and a seed is a
spice.
The roll call was answered with
naming an herb used in cooking.
Mrs. Glen chops her herbs with
scissors and if she has plenty of it
will put it in wax paper and freeze it
for later use.
Not only do humans like dill but
so do butterflies.
Garlic is known to help you stay
healthy but do not use before
surgery or if you are on heart
medication.
After explaining how to use the
different herbs, she said most herbs
are available throughout most of the
year.
To get rid of garlic or onion smell
on your hands rub your hands
around your stainless steel sink and
usually the smell disappears.
Kathy Bridge thanked Mrs. Glen.
After the minutes and treasurer’s
report, tickets were handed out to
the members to sell on the quilt that
will be drawn in September.
The cancer committee will consist
of Kathy Bridge, Ruth Bauer, Jackie
Mirotta and Marie McCutcheon.
The casserole supper and card
party will be on Wednesday, April
25 at 6:30 p.m. in the library. A set-
up and clean-up committee was also
put in place.
