HURON COUNTY 4-H
CHINCHILLA CLUB
By Zachary Drost,
Press Reporter
The third meeting of the Huron
County 4-H Chinchilla club took
place at the Blyth Vet Clinic, at 1
p.m., on March 3.
Once members of the 4-H
Chinchilla club arrived at the clinic
they began the tour. The guide for
the tour was veterinarian Lavern
Clark and his receptionist Mrs.
VanAmersfoort.
First the members were shown
the receptionist office and the
equipment found in the office area
such as phones, computers,
photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.
Dr. Clark talked about how animals
get their appointments and how
records of each farm and small
animal are kept on the computer.
Next they were shown the room
where most check-ups are given.
They saw some of the tools used,
like the digital weight scale, x-ray
machine, ultrasound machine the
microscope and heart monitor. Then
the 4-Hers saw the clinical
chemistry machine, and told what
that was used for.
They went into the surgery room
where there were things like the
anaesthetic equipment and dental
health machine. This room had a big
light to help the vet perform the
surgery.
Then they went to the kennel
room and saw various sized kennels
that animals are kept in. They also
saw a bathtub where animals can be
cleaned up.
Then it was time for a cat to have
a checkup. Dr. Clark explained how
he gets the history of the animal
from the owner and checks the
animal over.
Members volunteered to help do
things like listen to the heart-beat,
check the cats’teeth or ears and take
its temperature. The vet showed
them how to give the cat its
vaccination needles.
He talked about the different
medicines like rabies shots, de-
wormers and distemper. He showed
them that records and certificates
from the check-up are completed.
Leader Barb Storey presented the
vet with a jar of honey.
The next meeting is March 23 at
the Storey’s at 7 p.m.
