Severallocal 13 and 14-year-old youthstravelled to Palmerston to participatein a two-day broomball tournament,March 9 and 10.
The Blyth Gamblers took a chance
to have some fun and play some
broomball and ended up walking
away with the gold medal for
Bantams on Saturday night.
Game one was played on Friday
night against Mildmay. Nadine Otten
made a nice shot on net during the
first period. Greg Roetcisoender
picked up the ball and took it behind
the net passing to his teammate Brent
Drost, who shot the ball into the net
for the first goal.
The second period saw the same
line of players working together to
get another goal into the Mildmay
net. The game ended in a 2-0 victory
for Blyth.
Blyth played its second game late
Saturday morning against
Palmerston. This game had the play
going back and forth during the first
period. Each team had several
scoring opportunities, but the
goaltenders were working hard to
stop the shots. There was no score
after the first period.The coach gave the kids a pep talkat halftime and Blyth came outstrong. Brendon Boven whacked theball out of Blyth’s end. Drost pickedit up and ran with it along the boards,towards Palmerston’s net, then shot it
into the net from the corner.
Blyth had the chance to score when
Palmerston received a penalty for
high sticking during the face-off
midway through the period.
However, Blyth was unable to take
advantage of their powerplay. Later
Otten shot the ball up the ice to
Cassie Rivett, who took a shot on net
and scored for the Gamblers.
The game ended in another shutout
for Blyth’s goalie Derek Logtenberg
with a final score of 2-0.
The tournament was set up as a
double knock-out and Blyth went
into their third game against
Mildmay Saturday night with a loss.
The Blyth team had a chance to take
the gold medal if they won this
game.
Courtney Bos got the ball away
from Mildmay and shot it up the ice.
Alex Hogan picked up the pass and
scored the first goal of the night.
Otten made a nice pass up the ice to
Drost who ran to net and chipped the
ball right by the goalie.The Gamblers were ahead 2-0 athalftime.In the second period the Gamblerssealed their lead with another goal.Roetcisoender made a nice pass fromthe side to his teammate. Drost
picked up the ball and shot it into the
mesh.
The final score was a 3-0 win forBlyth.The Blyth Gamblers wereundefeated and had won the goldmedal.Art Bos did a fine job coaching thisgroup of players. The players and
parents thanked him for his time and
dedication during the tournament.
Logtenberg had an outstandingthree games in net. The defence did agreat job in obtaining ball control anddigging the ball away from theiropponents. They stopped the ballfrom ending up in their net and timeafter time they whacked the ball
down the ice to their forwards to take
a shot on net.
The Blyth Novices played a two
out of three series with Milverton.
The first game was won by Blyth
and the second by Milverton.
Due to bad weather they had to
shorten the series and Sunday, March
11 was do-or-die for the Novice
team.
Milverton scored two goals in the
first period while shutting down
Blyth. Finally in the second period
Brandon Marshall scored unassisted
to make the score 2-1. Three minutes
later Hunter Dale scored, assisted by
Dawson Coultes, to tie it.
It was an exciting game with all
the team playing hard to get that
third goal. Blyth just couldn’t get it
past the goalie, but many shots were
had.
Milverton scored in the third
period to make the score 3-2.
Blyth pulled their goalie, but could
not get another goal. Playing an
awesome game in net was Justin
Rodger.

Bantam Gamblers take gold at Palmerston
First time’s the charm
A Bantam team put together to play in a recent broomball tournament came away with the
gold medal. The one-time-only Blyth Gamblers are from left: coach Art Bos, Nadine Otten,

Palmerston was host to a recent
broomball tournament March 9 and
10 for levels PeeWee through
Juvenile. Blyth area youths joined
together and sent in teams from
every level and fans and parents
were treated to some really exciting
games of broomball. The Blyth
PeeWee co-ed team ended up on the
top of the heap for their division,
winning the gold.
Blyth played its first game on
Friday night at 7:20 p.m. against the
Mildmay Redwings. Blyth was very
keen to play and came out strong
right off the top. Hunter Broda shot
the ball out of his defensive end,
then Derek deBoer picked up the
pass and outran his opponents to
score. Marlayna Kolkman shot the
ball at the net and deBoer picked up
the ball to chip it in for his second
goal.
Brennan Kolkman dug for the ball
and scored to widen the lead after an
assist from Broda. Jordan deBoer
stopped the ball from heading
towards Blyth’s net and whacked it
up the ice. Jessica Kuik picked up
the ball and scored for Blyth,
making it 4-0 for Blyth at halftime.
Jordan deBoer and Kuik joined
forces again and earned the first goal
to start off the second period for
Blyth. Goalie Murray Dale shot the
ball down the ice and D. deBoer
picked up the pass and scored his
third of the game.
Mildmay never gave up and kept
digging for the ball and scored
during the last few seconds of the
game.
Blyth won 6-1.
Blyth met the Mildmay
Greenhawks for the next game at
noon on March 10. Brennan
Kolkman won the faceoff and drew
the ball pack to his defenceman,
Hunter Broda for a one timer into
the net. This goal saw the ball sail
through three Mildmay players.
Marlayna Kolkman set up the ball
for Blyth’s next goal shooting it
across the ice to D. deBoer.
Mildmay picked up her pass, but
deBoer stole the ball back and shot it
into the net.
The Blyth PeeWees were ahead 2-
0 at half time.
The play was back and forth in
both ends of the ice during the
second period. All of the Blyth
players worked hard to dig for the
ball and set up the play for a goal,
but Mildmay really picked up their
game during the second half and
Blyth was unable to score. Mildmay
was able to get a goal past Blyth’s
Dale with just half a minute left in
the game.
Fans were on the edge of their
seats as they waited to see how the
game would end. Blyth held off their
opponents and won the game 2-1.
Blyth went into their third game
on Saturday night. Since it was a
double knockout tournament, Blyth
players wouldn’t know if this was
their final game until they saw the
outcome of this game. Once again
the Mildmay Redwings were the
opponents.

his defensive end and sent the ball

THE MUNICIPALITY OF CENTRAL HURON
is pleased to announce the 6th annual Central Huron Façade Grant Program. In 2007,
the Program is expanded and may include façade improvements for all properties in
Central Huron that are assessed as Commercial for taxation purposes. The Municipality
has set aside funds to assist property owners in the expansion or improvement of the
building façade or signage.
Budget
The current 2007 Façade Grant Program budget has been set at $15,000 divided into
two program releases (a maximum of $5,000 of matching funds per application). The
funds will be distributed on a “first come first served” basis. For the first application dead-
line of May 10th a total of $12,000.00 will be available. The remaining $3,000.00 will be
available for applications received after May 10th. Funding may be in the form of a cash
or in-kind contribution.
To Qualify
The structure for the proposed enhancement must be within Central Huron and must
currently be assessed as Commercial, in whole or in part, for taxation purposes. The
proposed façade improvement must meet the specific property criteria outlined in the
Façade Improvement Concept” and enhance the “cosmetic” appeal of the structure from
a streetscape viewpoint. The application must be completed in its entirety and must
receive approval prior to the completion of the works. It is understood that the applicant
will be reimbursed the grant amount following the completion of the works and submis-
sion of all project receipts. Successful applicants will be required to submit a post project
report identifying the use of the funds.
Application
Applications for funding should include:
• Description of the project
• Timeline for completion of the work
• Budget for proposed project
• Visual representation of the proposed project
• Supporting information, as appropriate
• Amount of funding requested, specifying whether a cash or in-kind donation is required.
Deadline
Applications must be received by 12:00 noon May 10th, 2007. If you have questions or
