The Citizen, 2007-03-15, Page 6Off to a promising start, the
county’s campaign to acquire
a CT Scanner has welcomed a
second leader to the
committee effort.
Willi Laurie has joined
Patrick Murphy as co-chairs
of the CT for Huron County
Campaign committee.
With more than 33 years of
education experience
throughout South and Central
Huron under her belt, Laurie
said that she has witnessed the
growth of the community
through its schools and
children, and is excited to
help bring them this
beneficial tool.
Laurie and husband Joseph
are the parents of five
children, and she currently
sits as treasurer for the Varna
United Church and president
of the Huron-Bruce NDP
party.
“We’re very pleased that
Willi has agreed to join the
campaign in the role as co-
chair,” said Alexandra Marine
and General Hospital CEO
Bill Thibert. “She is an active
member of the community
who is committed to bringing
the CT to Huron.”
According to Laurie, the
scanner is an important tool
for Huron in terms of
reducing elder care wait and
transportation issues, as well
as a variety of others.
“It’s certainly not just
beneficial to the senior
population of Huron,” she
said. “Although it does help a
great deal in determining the
occurrence of heart attacks
and strokes, it will almost
eliminate the need for
exploratory surgeries in
patients of all ages and assist
in earlier assessment and
diagnosis.”
Both Laurie and Thibert
agreed that the economic
spin-off of the tool will be
beneficial to the community.
“It certainly will help with
new doctor recruitment which
is in itself a important need
of the community,” said
Thibert.
With its leadership in place,
the campaign will move
forward within the Huron
community to acquire the
sought-after equipment.

raised the issue of reserves.
“My concern is putting taxes
up with $16 million in
reserves.”
CAO Larry Adams,
however, cautioned council
about removing any of them.
“Smart people at home set
money aside so they always
have a little resource they can
draw on.”
Many of the reserves are
for specifics, he said, adding
that the warden’s task force
has recommended the use of
some reserves.
“But just be cautious,” he
advised. “One million dollars
out today takes a minimum of
$2 million to replace it. It’s
nice to have this money set
aside if we do have a
catastrophe.”
Continued from page 1to continue with this work in the weeks, months and years ahead.”McClinchey refers to
his time with Steckle as
apprenticing. He said that
he has learned much
from Steckle over the
years.
“Paul Steckle is a
dedicated and effective
MP and I am fortunate to
have had the opportunity
to apprentice with him
for so long,” McClinchey
said.
“That said, I have also
worked to forge my own
path and I look forward to continuing in the
tradition of strong and effective representation
of the people of Huron-Bruce.”
Steckle said that he still hopes to be involved
with the Liberals. He hopes to see the
continuation of the party, saying that he will
be looking over his successor’s shoulder,
offering some guidance.
With Steckle’s last election being a very
close race, it was suggested that this might be
the reason for a retirement decision to come
now.
“This has nothing to do with the last
election. I have never backed down from a
fight,” he said, adding that if anything, the last
election would be cause to further spur him
on.
Steckle said that of his accomplishments,he wants to be remembered as a Liberal whodid a lot for agriculture. He pointed out that he
is the only Liberal MP
currently in office in a
rural municipality in all
of Canada. This was a
point that he was
particularly proud of.
On a personal note,
Steckle said that the
ultimate going-away
present would be the
exoneration of Stephen
Truscott. He pointed out
that obviously that
would be more of a gift
for Truscott than it would be for him, but he
called Truscott a dear friend for whom he has
a lot of love and respect.
While Steckle is announcing his retirement,
he reiterated that he is simply not seeking re-
election. He said that he will be working and
working hard until the next election.
Steckle is optimistic about the future of the
Liberal party, even if he isn’t officially in the
picture. When asked if he would be involved
after his retirement, he ensured he would be
involved in some capacity.
But when it was suggested that he might
ride off into the sunset, he saw it a slightly
different way.
“I’m riding off into the sunrise,” he said.
“The sunset will come later.”
