HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-03-08, Page 20As if hawking your wares isn’t
good enough, auctioneers still strive
to be the best. And Brussels is home
to the best.
Greg Wheeler of Brussels took
part in the Ontario Auctioneering
Association’s provincial
championships in Stratford and left
town with the top prize.
In the men’s novice category,
Wheeler bested the competition due
to what he thinks was his experience
that elevated him above the crowd.
“I would say I had a bit more
experience than the other
competitors. I noticed on a lot of
judges’ cards that they said I was
very calm,” Wheeler said. “I guess
I’d call myself good with people. I
feel comfortable around them.”
The competition entailed the
contestants overseeing a live auction
put on by the Rotary Club in
Stratford with five judges positioned
in the audience.
The contestants were judged on
their control of the crowd, ability to
sell, chant and clarity to name a few.
Wheeler came home with two
trophies and a jacket, and while he
doesn’t take home any cash, he says
it pays off in work.
“You don’t win any money to
speak of, but it does help your career
down the road,” he said.
“I know last year when I competed
in Toronto, soon after that I had
already been offered three jobs.”
Wheeler has been in the business
of auctioneering for two years now,
saying that his last season was his
busiest to date, netting him
approximately 40 sales for the
season.
The competition took place onFeb. 24, and there was a wholeweekend full of seminars andinformation meetings; a sort of
seminar for auctioneers.
As the best in Ontario, naturally
Wheeler is on his way to represent
his province in the Canadian
championships.
They will take place in Toronto in
September. Last year the nationals
took place in Winnipeg, with stiff
competition for the Ontario title
coming from people all over the
country.Wheeler is confident in hisabilities though and looks forward tocompeting for the title of Canada’s
best.
“I knew that not everyone could
do this and I was fortunate enough to
excel in this field. I practised, it
takes a lot of practise and a lot of
learning, but the practising is the
biggest part of it,” he says.
“I knew I had something that
everybody didn’t have, so I drove on
with it.”

he won in addition to the respect of his peers by coming
out on top at the Ontario Auctioneers Association’s

communication, dealing with the crowd and clarity,
Wheeler rose above the crowd to take home the top prize.
