HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-03-08, Page 19March 1 was a nasty, snowy,
sleety, freezing rain, horrible day. I
had the “pleasure” of having to
deliver mail that day and thank
goodness I picked up a helper for the
big half of the route.
More than once, during whiteouts,
we said were going to quit at the end
of this road. Then it would clear
slightly and we would go on. Then
the freezing rain would hit and we’d
say we quit. Then it would stop and
we’d go on.
We did finish the mail — slowly,
but surely— but I was glad to get
home.
Returning home from his second
holiday this winter is Ed McClure.
This time he spent a week in San
José, Mexico on the Baha Peninsula.
He stayed at the Pasa Drew Resort
and had a great time. he spent time
doing his favourite thing which is
four-wheeling around the area and
said he felt safe all the time.
He enjoyed hot days, cool nights
and came home with a nice tan.
Chris Ryan had a bit of an oops
last weekend. While he was
snowmobiling at his parents’ place
he came down a little hard off a
steep snowbank and flipped off his
machine.
Suffering unknown injuries, he as
taken off to the hospital in an
ambulance. Thankfully, there were
no serious injuries, though he did
sustain a couple of broken ribs,
which some people can tell you are
painful and will take time to heal.
Joe Ryan has returned from
Toronto and the Good Roads
convention. I’m sure he learned a lot
and his return was just in time for
stormy weather.
Last week’s column should have
read Carl and Tab McCallum not
Cal and Tab and the successful
benefit dance held for them. They
lost their home to fire and this week
it was demolished as they made
plans to rebuild.
Our condolences are extended to
Dave and Alice Marks and Stan
Marks and their families on the
passing of Irene Marks.
Our condolences are also
extended to John and Merilyn
McDonald and family on the
passing of Merilyn’s mother Edna
Reddon.
Don and Pat Dalton, along with
friends Keith and Bonnie McMillan
have returned from an eight-day
holiday cruise. They flew from
Detroit to San Diego; which they
found quite cool; to board their
Carnival Cruise ship for a tour of the
coast of Mexico. It was a family-
oriented trip with lots of children on
board and many activities to
participate in.
They cruised down the coast on
very quiet water, stopping at resorts.
Pat reports that the stop at Ixtapa
was beautiful and what a clean and
lovely town it was.
A vendor market was close to the
port for shopping and as they
walked around the town they
wheren’t bothered by the usualpeddlars as in other ports. Pat says she would go to back toIxtapa any time. She reports theyhad a very nice time, great food andentertainment. Don reports that if you are goingto be out on the deck in the sun, evenfor a short time that sunscreen is adefinite must.
The boat ride was fairly calm most
of the time except for the last night,
which Pat reports was very rough.
They were glad to come home, but
the weather hasn’t been very
welcoming.
Our couple of nice days last week
must have made the animals think it
was spring. I have reports of
groundhogs being out and about. I
saw one just sitting in the field
looking around.
Cats like to wander more in the
spring and Howard and Audrey
Hackwell report that two of their
cats were killed on the road.
The Bennetts report that the food
availability must be getting short in
the bush as the turkeys are coming
more into the open to look for food.
We can only hope spring is just
around the corner.
Jeanne Kirkby has been
grandmothering this past week to
Sean, who’s nine and Melanie,
who’s five, as well as Jesse the dog.
Jeanne’s son Paul and wife Van were
house hunting near Ottawa where
Paul will now be working. They will
be moving at the end of March from
Scarborough to Barrhaven.
Jeanne tried to keep busy with the
children by tutoring them with their
shcoolwork, taking a trip to Mr.
Cardiff’s apple farm, to the CowboyLoft for a new dog brush and toDauphin’s feed mill for bird seed. The children enjoyed seeing theseunusual places and in some caseshad a tour. When Paul and Van arrived lateWednesday evening they were gladto have arrived before Thursday’snasty weather.
On Friday John Gaunt took Paul
and Sean to the sales barn and Sean
remarked on the unusual sounds and
smells.
The children spent time playing
outside with the dogs and building
snow tunnels.
Jeanne said her place is very quiet
and peaceful since their departure.
She and her dog and cat have
resumed their normal routine.
We are sorry to report that Mary
Humphries has been in Clinton
hospital this past week. We hope she
feels better and will be back home
soon.
Some people are still enjoying and
experiencing Christmas. One lucky
person was Mabel Willis. A gift she
received from her granddaughter
KellyAnn Dalton was a voucher for
dinner and a show. Friday they went
to see Wild Hogs.
Mabel reports it’s a wonderful
gift, not just and dinner and show,
but the time spent together with a
loved one. There’s an idea for others
who don’t know what to get
Grandma for those special
occasions. Don’t forget Grandpas
count too.
Speedy recovery wishes go out to
Bonnie Clark who underswent an
unexpected appendectomy last
week. We hope she recuperatesquickly and is back to as good asnew. Returning from a week’s holidayto El Salvador to the RoyalDeCameron Salinitas Resort isClyde and Cathy McClure and ValShortreed. It was a very large resortwith four pools including a saltwaterpool which filled every night when
the tide came in. There were four à
la carte restaurants, including a
Mediterranean, Italian, Tai and
steakhouse.
They went kayaking and went on
a Mayan tour where they are still
discovering and excavating ruins.
Some ruins had the very steep steps
to climb and others were just steep
hills overlooking the area.
They also saw volcanoes and old
lava from eruptions. They landed at
the San Salvador airport and the
weather was very, very hot, but
usually after lunch a nice breeze
would blow.
It is a fairly new resort, very clean,
and Val would recommend it if you
like it hot.
I’m pleased to report that Barry
Hoegy is home from London
hospital and is recovering nicely. He
is sore, of course, and will require
time to recuperate. Our thoughts are
with him and his family.
Barry and Karen Hoegy’s
daughter Sherry Delay flew in from
her home down south to be with her
parents during the past week. She
had trouble getting here and flying
into London due to storms in the
south. She flew back home this
weekend again in stormy weather.
Ron and Betty McCallum were
away a few days last week to Debut,
Iowa. They were there to tour the
John Deere plant where construction
equipment is made. Betty said it was
quite interesting.
Congratulations to Angela
Horbanuik and Dave Baxter who
were married last Saturday at
Holmesvill’e White Carnation. The
evening wedding, dinner and
reception were witnessed by theirfamily and friends in a casualatmosphere. Home from Picture Butte, Albertafor a week’s visit and to attned theHorbanuik/Baxter wedding wereSteve and Melissa Leonhardt.
