The Seaforth Stars began their
semi-final series with Ennismore on
Friday, March 2 in Seaforth.
A well rested and high spirited
Ennismore squad came out flying
with the opening drop of the puck.
Ennismore struck early and often
putting the homeside down 3-0
before the first period ended.
Seaforth battled back in the
second finding the board on a
powerplay marker by Darcey Cook,
assisted by Kyle Courtney and Dave
McClory. Cook took the pass from
Courtney and after having the first
shot blocked sent a high wrister over
the goaltender’s shoulder to narrow
the gap to two.
Ennismore however would answer
back with two of their own to
increase their lead to 5-1.
The Seaforth squad appeared to
regroup for the third period but
Ennismore scored once more to give
them a 6-1 victory and a lead in the
series.
Play resumed the following night
in Seaforth. Spurred on by an
enthusiastic crowd the Stars would
provide a much more entertaining
game.
In an effort to silence the fans
Ennismore grabbed an early 1-0 lead
before the end of the period.
The Stars however struck back on
the powerplay with Cook slamming
home a rebound off a Courtney shot
with McClory drawing the assist as
well.
Ryan Watterworth broke in alone
beating the goaltender but ringing it
off the goal post on a nice effort in
an attempt to give the Stars the
lead.
Before the period ended Jeff
Elliott would be injured on a
collision with an Ennismore player
on a race to the puck. Elliott would
not return for the third period. Josh
Nurse would take over the puck
stopping duties for the remainder of
the game.
The Seaforth squad came out on
fire in the third. Cook notched his
second of the night on a tip off a
Courtney wrister set up by McClory
fooling the Ennismore back stopper.
A determined Ennismore team
responded with a goal of their own
to tie the game 2-2 and send it to
overtime.
The overtime saw great end-to-end
action with Seaforth out chancing
their opponents. With only 24
seconds remaining on the clock
McClory slammed home the winner
on a great feed from Cook sending
the fans to their feet, icing the
victory and giving the Stars a tie in
the series at one game apiece. A
strong performance by Stars
goaltending duo of Elliott and Nurse
made the win possible.
Coach Rick Elliott credits the
boys’ hard work and well-
disciplined play to securing the
victory. The play now shifts to
Ennismore for games on Friday and
Saturday nights with the fifth game
back in Seaforth on Sunday at 3 p.m.
if necessary.
In the daytime league at the
Wingham Curling Club on Monday
there were some rather one sided
scores. Bruce Robertson defeated
Les Shaw 14 - 4 and Ivan Dow was
a 9 - 4 winner over Wendell
Stamper.
Three games ended in the same
scores as Jim Coultes defeated Ron
McMichael and Mac Inglis
defeated Norm Fairles both by the
score of 13-1. They say things
come in threes. Stewart Leedham
was a 13 - 1 winner over Nelson
Frank.
In a close game Don Henry was
an 8 - 5 winner over Lloyd Wheeler
and it took the extra end for Glenn
McMichael to edge Irving Elliott
10 - 9.

In Monday men’s action Stewart
Leedham rocked to a 10 - 3 win
over Les Shaw and Bruce
Robertson recorded an 8 - 6 victory
over Barry Simpson.
***
In Tuesday ladies’six-end games
Debbie Gammie doubled up on
Ann Crawford with a 6 - 3 win.
Marg Moffat’s new delivery
continues to work as she recorded a
6 - 2 win over Mary Henry and
Kayla Bishop continued her fine
curling with a big 12 - 2 win over
Cathy Donnelly.
***
In Tuesday’s competitive leagues
Earl Fitch was in fine form with an
11 - 6 victory over Rob Middleton.
The DeVos brothers both came up
with wins as Bill defeated Calvin
Ruttan 7 - 6 and Aart DeVos was a
9 - 4 winner over Russ Taylor. It
went down to the button as Shawn
Cottrill recorded a 7 - 6 win over
lefty Don Edgar.

In the Wednesday mixed league
John Dailleboust got back in the
win column in a big way with a 10
- 5 win over Wayne Horton. Steve
Burke edged Earl Fitch 7 - 6 and
Aart DeVos recorded a 9 - 6 win
over Dean Newson.
In a battle of the girls Leanne
Elston was the winner over Tammy
Adams.

The curling club was a beehive of
activity on Wednesday as the
WOSSA bonspiel was held with
teams from London, St. Thomas,
St. Marys, Woodstock and
Wingham. There were four girls
teams and four boys teams
competing with the winners to
advance to the All Ontario
Championships to be held in
Mississauga.
In the boys division the Parkside
rink from St. Thomas went
undefeated with three wins. Huron
Park of Woodstock was in second
spot with two wins.
In the girls division the outcome
was so close, as the teams were
evenly matched. When the last rock
came to rest, lo and behold, three
teams were tied with two wins and
one loss. At first glance it looked
like the Madill girls were the
winners, but with a re-check of
scores the result was the Medway
girls from London taking top prize.
They had won 13 ends and blanked
one end. The Wingham girls were
close with 12 ends won and one
end blanked. It was a rather tough
loss to take but they are certainly to
be congratulated on the excellent
effort put forth. Members of the
Madill rink were Leanne Elston,
Brittany Horton, Kayla Bishop and
Julie Phillips.
One of the parents from the
Parkside teams from St. Thomas he
stated that they had high hopes for
their girls team and thought the
boys’team would be lucky to win a
game. The result was the boys were
undefeated and the girls went
winless. One never knows!

On Feb. 24 the district Masonic
Lodges held their annual curling
bonspiel and banquet with teams
on hand from Blyth, Brussels,
Lucknow, Carlow, Kincardine,
Listowel and Wingham.
In curling action the Carlow rink
anchored by Bruce Phillips and
Ron Durnin took top spot with 47
3/4 points. There was a real battle
for second spot with Lucknow’s 35
points a mere half point ahead of
teams from Brussels and Blyth who
ended up tied for third spot with 34
1/2 points.
The Carlow rink claim they are
once-a-year curlers but on the ice
they looked like real pros coming
up with some great take-outs and
well placed draws.
Bonspiel convenor Ron Alton
reported a great day.
