Atom Local League loses by 1
Saugeen Maitland Midgets advance to provincialsRecently the Saugeen MaitlandMidget AAs completed both theirleague playoffs and provincial playdowns. While the girls were successful indefeating Stratford in a best-of-fiveseries for provincial playdowns, they
were unable to get past Chatham in
league playoffs.
After tying the first two games
against Stratford the girls knew they
would have to pick it up a notch to
pull ahead in the series. Game three
was held in Stratford on Feb. 21.
Both teams were neck and neck until
Victoria Bertrand of Port Elgin hit
Tammy Freiburger of Wingham,
who managed to go top shelf on the
Stratford goaltender with about six
minutes left in the second period.
Stratford battled back hard in the
third however, and Brittney Peters of
Blyth was forced to aid her
goaltender by sprawling to stop a
sure goal and preserve the shutout.
Maitland held tough, and with
under a minute to go Kendall
Whitfield of Blyth dug the puck out
of the corner and seeing that the
goalie was pulled she made no
mistake firing it into the empty net
to solidify the win. Victoria Rumph was solid andrecorded the shutout. On Feb. 25 the girls were off toChatham for game one of theirleague playoffs. UnfortunatelyMaitland found themselves trailing
by one going into the third, then
with just under two minutes left in
the game Chatham added another.
Maitland was not ready to give up
just yet though, and with 27 seconds
left on the clock Peters hit the mark
off a passing play by Whitfield and
Freiburger.
Although this would not be
enough to change the outcome of the
game, it showed Chatham that the
girls would not be going down
without a fight.
On Feb. 27 it was back to Howick
for game four of the Stratford series.
Stratford would be the first to find
the scoreboard, and Maitland found
themselves trailing 1-0 after the first.
Knowing that a win would clinch the
series the girls dug deep and battled
back hard in the second.
With six and a half minutes left in
the period, Peters and Molly
McNulty of Kincardine teamed up
to send Kate Wagner of SaubleBeach flying down the left wing.Wagner proceeded to unload anabsolute zinger, dinging one off thepost and in behind the stunnedStratford tender. Then later in the third, Kassie
Avery teamed up with Freiburger to
slide it out front to Whitfield who let
off a blister of a wrister that blasted
right through the Stratford
goaltenders outstretched glove.
The girls would manage to hold on
to the lead, securing the series and a
spot at the provincial tournament in
April.
March 3 marked game two of the
Chatham series at home in Howick.
Still pumped after the Stratford win
and looking to get revenge the girls
came out in full force. With just over
five minutes left in the first,
Whitfield found Freiburger who
spotted Bertrand wide open out front
and Bertrand made it look easy
beating the goaltender cleanly.
The girls didn’t look back after
this, with Kelsey VanderVeen of
Lucknow and Madison Arthur of
Owen Sound feeding Dru Austin of
Goderich, and then Freiburger and
Bertrand connecting with Whitfieldto put Maitland up 3-0. Syd Brown of Kincardinemanaged to hang on for the shutout. With the series tied at one apiece itwas back to Chatham on March 4 forthe third and final game. Partway
through the first, the puck took a
funny hop off the boards and
managed to find its way back out
front of the net onto the stick of a
Chatham forward, who tapped it into put Chatham ahead by one. Although the girls fought backhard, creating numerous scoringchances, they were unable to get agood bounce and Chatham managedto hold onto the lead. Although this
means that the girls are done league
play they still have a Brampton
tournament and Provincials to
prepare for in April.
It’s been a stretch of close games
for Blyth’s Local League Atoms,
suffering a tough one-goal loss and a
hard-fought, one-goal win last week.
Most recently, Seaforth travelled
to Blyth on March 4, with the home
team taking the contest by a score of
2-1.
Dustin Treble held down the fort in
net.
Seaforth scored in the first, and
Blyth came from behind with two
goals in the second to solidify the
win.
Scoring first was Josh VanSoest on
an unassisted goal, followed by
Curtis Raynard from Dylan Bromley
and Dallas Coultes.
