HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-03-08, Page 2Local hockey phenom Brook Wheeler of Brussels has hung up her skates. Wheeler, goalie for Colgate University in the ECAC League, went out on a high note off the ice, when she was asked to speak at the league’s banquet. However, Colgate lost to Dartmouth in the Final Four ECAC hockey tournament this past weekend. Dartmouth went on to win the tournament, but this did not weaken anyones’ spirits. Colgate made history for its program this year, with several first- time defeats against esteemed opponents like Harvard, Dartmouth and Princeton. Much of this success came from Wheeler’s efforts. Wheeler helped her team to excel, but accomplished many personal milestones along the way as well. While playing on a scholarship, Wheeler racked up 10 shutouts, was named ECACHL Goalie of the Week seven times, won the USCHO National Defensive Player of the week as well as being named the team’s most improved and most valuable player. Wheeler came out of the Feb. 25 weekend with a 0.94 goals against average, a league best, and a .974 save percentage. PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2007. Thank goodness for e-mail. Kali Alcorn is alive and well and seeing all sorts of things in the area south of Cape Town in South Africa. Poverty is being seen with new eyes as she helps feed and teach the young children of her assignment. E-mail access is limited but it’s enough to keep mom Mary Ann and grandparents Howard and Joan Bernard from excess worry. She’s living her dream and seeing the other end of the world. Way to go Kali. Every year since 1922 women of Canada have organized a day of prayer the first Friday of March. Now over 2,000 communities across our land joined with more than 170 other countries to use the power of prayer to improve the world about us. The offerings and donations to the Women’s Inter-Church Council are giving to worthy projects that improve the lives of others. Another year’s service is over, this one prepared by the women of Paraguay letting the rest of us know we are all children of God. We know there are wild turkeys out and about. My work friend Jeanette planted cranberry bushes because she was told they liked them. She was quite amazed to look out her front window during one of our famous whiteouts to see a whole flock of the big birds having a feast on her lawn. They stayed long enough that she got several pictures of them eating. Enjoy the snow in all its abundance. Bye now. Betty GW By Jo-Ann McDonald The week began at the Brussels Legion Branch with the speeches of the youth of Brussels and Grey Central Public Schools. Judges were Les Cook, Blyth; Sandra Cable, Brussels and Dave Newman, Wingham. The general meeting of the Branch was held on Tuesday evening with only eight Comrades present. Donations to Brussels Minor Hockey for jerseys for the PeeWee team and to Easter Seals were approved. A donation for the Cadet Corps was approved. Only a few people were present for the Friday night supper of sausage and sauerkraut, due to weather conditions. This week is salmon loaf. The Cadet Corps, along with Clinton Cadet Corps 3144 met at the Brussels Branch for a sleepover on Friday night. They enjoyed the leftover sausage for a snack later in the evening. Up and going early the next morning they had breakfast at the Branch, then were off to a training area near Clinton. The day and overnight camping experience was to improve and diversify the type and quality of training for the Cadets. The Branch expresses its condolences to Comrade Steve MacGuire’s family on his passing this past weekend. Comrade Steve was a past Zone and District Commander. He held many other committee chairs in the Legion family. Steve was from Clinton. He had friends in the many Branches in this area and will be missed by all.
