The February meeting of the
Belgrave Women’s Institute began
with a potluck lunch.
President Audrey Fenton
welcomed 39 members and guests.
O Canada was sung and Rev. Ethel
Miner Clare said grace.
Dorothy Coultes read an article
about the founding of the WI by
Erland and Janet Lee and Adelaide
Hunter Hoodless on Feb. 19, 1897 in
Stoney Creek.
At that time women’s work,
especially on the farm, was very
difficult and included growing food,
milking cows, sewing family
clothes, making soap and tending to
the health concerns of the family.
Since that time the WI has grown
to include over 500 branches with
7,500 members in Ontario and
branches worldwide.
The guest speaker was Debbie
Bauer, the president of Huron West
District WI. She spoke on promoting
the branch to overcome and attract
new members. They need to think
positively and with enthusiasm to
promote growth in branches and be
willing to accept changes.
Dorothy thanked Debbie for the
positive message and presented her
with a bouquet of flowers.
The business meeting opened with
the Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and
the roll call What My Mother Taught
Me.
It was agreed to donate $50 to the
Go-Go Grannies to support women
in South Africa belonging to the
Stephen Lewis Foundation.
There is a planning meeting for
the District annual to be held on
Monday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the
Belgrave WI hall.
The next potluck and meeting will
be held on March 20 with a musical
program.

On top of things
What a perfect day for outdoor fun. The Brussels Brownies had sunshine and blue sky to
make their snowshoeing outing at the Nature Centre a nice outing. Parents, leaders and
young girls were all smiles as they took great advantage of the weather change. (Vicky Bremner

Florence McArter and George
Fletcher greeted worshippers at
Knox United Church on Sunday,
Feb. 25.
Rev. Ethel Miner Clare welcomed
everyone to worship on the Song of
Faith.
The senior choir sang Here in the
House of the Lord.
The service consisted of the
singing of many hymns and readings
as printed in the service of worship.
This statement of faith attempts
to reflect the spirit of the
United Church of Canada and to
respond to various defining elements
in social, political and historical
context, including the place of the
church in society, the cultural and
intellectual setting in which
Christians find ourselves, the
meaning of truth, the impact of the
market economy on daily life, and
the growing issue of the meaning of
security.
This is not a statement for all time
but for this time. As the spirit keeps
faith, Christians express their
understanding of the Holy with
confidence. This understanding is
always partial and limited, said Rev.
Clare. We have faith and this
statement collects the meaning of
our song.
Don Procter and Carl Procter took
up the offering.
The closing hymn was O’ For a
World.
Bible study will be held on
Thursday, March 1 from 9:30 a.m. -
11 a.m. in the church. Also on
March 1 the church will be open for
prayer from 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. and
every Thursday during Lent.
The World Day of Prayer will be
held at Knox United Church on
Friday, March 2 at 2 p.m. It will be
led by the Presbyterian ladies.
