Canadian Champions as of last
week. Kaitlin Ritchie, the daughter
of Gary and Joan Ritchie, has been
a member of the team for many
years. They participated in the
provincial competition in Thunder
Bay, a few weeks ago and finished
second but went on to compete in
the Canadian championship.
This event was held in Quebec
City and this time they won gold.
Markham placed first, with Ilderton
placing second and an Edmonton
team placing third.
Congrats to Kaitlin and her team
and proud Grandma Mary.
Returning from a getaway to
Mexico is Kelly McDonald. She
was at the Club Diamond Hotel at
the Grand Baha Principei Resort,
part of the area of the Mayan
Riviera. The weather was perfect,
hot days, cool windy nights. She
and Adam went snorkelling, went
to Coba, a Mayan village where
they climbed the steep 120-step
ruin and went ziplining in another
area.
The Jaguar Cenote, the
underground natural pure water
system, was beautiful with its
shimmering green stones in the
water. Time was spent shopping in
Playa Del Carman and taking a tour
of Tolume and its temples and
ruins.
A wonderful day in the water was
spent swimming with the dolphins,
sea lions and manatees. The
manatees or sea cows are very large
and gentle and are known as the
elephants of the sea. They are such
slow moving creatures that algae
has time to grow on their backs.
They are affectionate and liked to
“kiss” the swimmers.
The dolphins were also very
people friendly and would come up
underneath their feet and push them
to the surface. They also allowed
them to “ride” or pull them with
their fins.
It was a great trip for reading
week and now it’s back to school.
Card cavalcade
Despite bitter cold and windy conditions, Auburn Hall was packed with card players last
Thursday at the Auxiliary Card Cavalcade for the Clinton Public Hospital. Admission was $5,
but came with an afternoon of cards, as well as coffee and dessert, with all the donations
going to a very worthy cause. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

The Auburn Women’s Institute
sponsored a fun afternoon
Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Auburn
Community Hall. It started with
dessert at 1:30 p.m. and visiting,
followed by euchre. There were 11
tables in play. Some in attendance
played Scrabble.
Prizes were given and there was a
50/50 draw.
The proceeds went to local
hospitals.
It turned out to be a stormy
day and some didn’t get home
because of road closures and poor
visibility.
