The Huron Perth Lakers AAA
Major Midget hockey team was
eliminated in Alliance quarter-final
playoff action this past weekend by
the league’s fourth-ranked team, the
Windsor Jr. Spitfires. The Lakers
lost the six point series, seven points
to three.
Game five was played Saturday in
Brussels with the Lakers facing a
must-win situation, in order to force
a sixth game.
Windsor led 3-2 after the first
period and never gave up the lead.
The Jr. Spitfires added three more
goals in the second and an empty
netter in the third to win the game 7-
3.
Kurtis Bartliff scored all three
Laker goals. Assisting on the goals
were Chris Holmes with two, J.J.
Sparling, Tyler Masson, and Colin
Thompson.
Windsor will now face the
Waterloo Wolves in one semi final,
as the London Jr. Knights take on the
Hamilton Reps in the other.
This was the first time in recent
years that the Lakers have had a
Major Midget program. Despite the
early playoff exit, the team met with
much success, especially
considering the program was in its
first year. They finished with a
regular season record of 18 wins, 10
losses, and two ties. They were third
in the ten-team Alliance AAA league
and second in the west division.
The Midget Lakers also played in
three tournaments. They were
invited to the St. Leonard
International Midget Tournament in
Montreal, where they failed to
qualify for the playoff round. At the
Wexford Midget Showcase
Tournament in Toronto, they lost the
quarter final game to the eventual
tournament champions, the Ajax-
Pickering Raiders. The team was
also invited to the International
Silver Stick Finals in Sarnia, where
they lost in the semi-finals to the
Markham Waxers.
According to
MidgetAAACanada.com the Lakers
were ranked as high as 11th in
Ontario and 19th in the country, over
the course of the season. The team
was called The league’s surprise
team, by the Alliance AAA Midget
Top 10 publication, as they were
ranked third in the Alliance behind
league powerhouses, the London Jr.
Knights, and the Waterloo Wolves.
Their 8-2 record to open the
season, surprised many around the
league, and they continued to
surprise at the end of the season,
playing both London and Waterloo
tough down the stretch, when
nobody else was able to compete
with those two teams.
The Lakers were the only team in
the league to defeat the Jr. Knights at
their own rink this year.
AAA Major Midget is junior
caliber hockey with teams playing
three 20-minute periods and having
full 20 player rosters. Because of
this junior style of hockey and their
success this season, the Lakers
attracted a lot of attention from Jr. B,
tier 2 Jr. A, OHL, and QMJHL
teams.
The 2007-2008 Major Midget

ending the season for Blyth. (Vicky Bremner photo)
The Blyth Bantam Rep Bulldogs
met up with Embro in Blyth Friday
night for game five of the OMHA
quarter-final playoffs.
Embro started the scoring in the
first period but the Bulldogs weren’t
long getting the game tied up with a
goal from Adam Cronin, assisted by
Tyler Stevenson and Dallas
Pennington.
Embro captured the lead again but
Blyth’s Dan Dery managed to pop
another one in unassisted to keep the
game even. The second period was
over Stevenson captured a much-
needed goal to give Blyth the lead
going into the third period.
Unfortunately Embro came out
strong in the third and managed to
tie things up which took the teams
into overtime. Goaltender for Blyth,
Sheldon Reid, played a spectacular
game but Embro was the first to
score in overtime.
It was a disappointing loss for
Blyth putting the team out of the
OMHA playoffs, but the team has
had a great year and will continue
with group play for the rest of the
season.
