HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-03-01, Page 8The Seaforth Juvenile Stars
eliminated Oro Thunder this past
weekend six points to four moving
them into the OMHA semi-finals.
The team travelled to Oro on
Saturday night with the series tied at
three points each. The Stars struck
first with Brad Henderson notching a
goal early in the first period. Darcey
Cook put the visitors up 2-0 with a
powerplay marker before the period
was up.
Oro would strike back with a
powerplay goal of their own to close
the gap to one goal.
Seaforth would go up once again
with Kyle Courtney lighting the
lamp on a nice slapper assisted by
Cook and McClory to pad the lead to
two before the end of the second
period. The third period saw the
Thunder score two goals to tie the
game.
McClory then scored assisted by
Cook and Courtney to grab the lead
back for Seaforth.
However Oro would tie it up once
again on the powerplay before
period end to send it to overtime.
The Thunder applied incredible
pressure keeping Seaforth on their
heels for the majority of the period.
Jeff (The Cat) Elliott stole the
show with an amazing stop on a Oro
breakaway to secure the point for the
Stars.
The game ended in a 4-4 tie.
The scene switched from there
back to Seaforth for a Sunday night
game. The Thunder came storming
out of the blocks and kept steady
pressure on the Stars.They were
finally rewarded with a goal to give
them a 1-0 lead.
The Stars came bouncing back
with a goal from Courtney, assisted
by Cook and McClory.
However before the second period
ended Oro scored again.
An inspirational talk by coach
Rick Elliott between periods seemed
to provide the motivation the Stars
needed to battle back to tie the score
early in the third. Chad Wise slapped
the puck into the daunting cage with
assists going to Watterworth and
Cartwright. The Stars then
proceeded to notch the go-ahead
goal by McClory assisted by
Courtney and Cook.
Just to provide some insurance
Cody Anderson snuck one by the
Oro keeper assisted by linemate
Henderson.
This would prove to be the winner
as Oro could only muster one late
goal to narrow the lead to one.
Once again Elliott would make
two spectacular saves to seal the
deal.
The Stars walked away with a 4-3
victory and a continuation of the
OMHA playdowns.
The Stars will now faceoff against
Ennismore for a chance at a birth in
the OMHA final. Times and dates
are not finalized at this time but will
begin March 3 this coming weekend.
Local players on the team include
Cook, Elliott and Anderson.

south, was right on the button with
a 9-4 victory over Kayla Bishop.
Taking the skipping reins Debbie
Gammie ran up a 10-2 score over

Without a doubt the best curling
of the week was on Wednesday in
the Huron-Perth High School
playoffs with teams on hand from
Stratford, St. Marys, Clinton,
Exeter and Wingham.
In the boys division in the finals
St. Marys downed Clinton to
advance to the WOSSA finals. In
the girls division it was the
Wingham girls who came out on
top. The Madill girls defeated
Stratford in the first game and St.
Marys in the second game.
The final game against Clinton
had all grandparents on hand,
sitting on the edge of their chairs.
What an exciting game! The girls
slipped behind in the early ends
when they gave up a twosome on a
missed takeout. There was lots of
excitement with Clinton skip
Gibbings coming up with some
great shots. They had the lead for
every end and were two up going
into the eighth and final end.
All four Wingham girls rose to
the occasion and when skip Leanne
Elston’s last rock came to rest on
the rings Wingham had a count of
three and a one-point lead and the
win. They advance to the WOSSA
finals which will be played in
Wingham on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
This talented Wingham Madill
foursome had Julie Phillips as lead,
Kayla Bishop as second,, Brittany
Horton vice and skip Leanne
Elston.

team district playdowns.
In Vanastra in junior mixed
playdowns the team of Cole
McDonald, Ainslie Weishar, Chris
Cottrill and Keisha Carter won the
B side and will advance to the
district playdowns to be played
March 3 at the Hyland Curling
Club in London. Well done.
The bantam playdowns were
held in Palmerston.
The Wingham club was
represented by the foursome of
Kyle Forster, Kabrina Bishop, Ben
Procter and Ellie Schimanski and
although they did not win they
played well and certainly enjoyed
the competition. Kayla Bishop
teamed up with a rink from Exeter
and they lost out in the finals.
