The announcement came at the annual meeting of the Dairy Farmers of Canada and “it was above and beyond what we expected,” Saunders told the annual meeting of the Huron County Dairy Producersin Brussels, Monday. “He got astanding ovation.”“They (the Conservative Party)have gone further than any otherparty has gone in the past 15 years,” to support the dairy industry, he said. While other parties have vocally supported supply management but didn’t take the action required to protect it. The importation of milk protein concentrates has been a way around the tariffs that have protected the dairy industry from low-cost importsof dairy products. Using a loopholethat did not consider these dairyproducts, processors have used theconcentrates to replace Canadian-produced milk in dairy products like cheese. But while he praised Strahl’s action to invoke Article 28 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade to modify its WTO commitments, Saunders said there are other issues arising daily. Recently he had heard of one company that is importing tankerloads of chocolate milk which arethen packaged in the Ontario plant.The company will supply all thecholcolate milk for one large retailer.Since chocolate milk is not covered by the tariff, Saunders said this is not illegal. It makes up about six per cent of the Ontario demand for milk.
