HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-02-08, Page 18Summer Company is an
opportunity for youth to realize their
dream of operating a business and
being their own boss, and winning
an award of up to $3,000 at the same
time. This program, sponsored by
the Ministry of Small Business &
Entrepreneurship (MSBE) is
entering its seventh year in Huron
County.
Since its inception, 29 Summer
Company awards have been granted
in Huron and 29 young people were
allowed to spread their wings and try
out a new business idea.
Applications can be accepted on-
line and this year, for the first time,
the Ministry is offering a contest for
early applications. Your name could
be entered in a draw for a PC Tablet
Computer (and more)!
Call 519-527-0305 for further
information.
Training and mentorship is
provided during the summer by a
volunteer group of community
mentors. Financial assistance with
start-up costs (up to $1,500) is
available and, upon successful
completion of the program
requirements, the student will be
eligible for an additional award of up
to $1,500.
Participants must be aged 15-29 at
the time of their application,
attending school on a full-time basis
(either secondary school o college)
and returning to school on a full-
time basis in the fall.
The business must be a new, first-
time venture for the applicant and
the completed application form
requires a comprehensive business
plan. Assistance in the preparation of
the plan is available from the Huron
Small Business Enterprise Centre.
An information session on
developing a business plan is being
offered on Thursday, Feb. 22 from
7-9 p.m. at the Huron Business
Centre in Seaforth. Find out what’s
involved in developing an effective
business plan. Pre-register by calling
Lisa at 519-527-0305.

THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2007. PAGE 19.
Don’t let the Huron County cold,
wind and snow stop you – enjoy the
season and keep fit.
Now that winter’s in full swing,
people might be finding it hard to be
as active as they were during the
warm summer months.
However, there are 60 benefits to
being physically active?
“Benefits include less stress, more
energy and better overall health,”
says health promoter Alycia Collins
at the Huron County Health
Unit.“Make a list of how you can
benefit from physical activity,” she
says.
“Then, choose something different
each day to motivate you to get up
and get active.”
Physical activity should be
something you enjoy. Choosing
activities you like will help to keep
you going through the winter.
Look in the paper, listen to the
radio and check with your local
recreation facility for upcoming
events in your community.
Gather up your family and go for a
winter hike or cross-country ski on
Huron County trails.
Visit www.ontarioswestcoast.ca
for more information and for trail
maps.
Tobogganing is another fun winter
activity. It’s something everyone can
enjoy.
Activities like these are great
choices because they are not
expensive.
Keeping these tips in mind, you
can enjoy a fun, safe, and active
winter.
“The colder temperatures don’t
have to keep you cooped up inside,”
says Collins. “Take the time to enjoy
the natural beauty that Huron
County offers.”

safety tips and physical activity,

To celebrate Heritage Day 2007,
the Huron County Museum will be
open for extended hours on Monday,
Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. - 8
p.m.Admission is free.
The Heritage Canada Foundation
has chosen the theme for 2007 as
Places for People – Our Heritage of
the Every Day. Heritage buildings of
the every day can be as familiar as
the corner store, small town bakery,
church or farm.
Across Canada there is a wealth of
vernacular heritage – some
recognized, some undiscovered.
This heritage helps to define and, in
turn, is defined by the place in which
it was built and the individuals who
built it. The purposes are many, but
they seem to fit into simple
categories: where we settle, where
we grow, where we live, where we
work, where we do business, where
we learn, and where we worship.
The special temporary exhibit
currently on display is Cultivating
Ontario’s West Coast: Agriculture in
Huron County. Investigate the
history and development of one of
Huron County’s leading industry’s –
agriculture. Examine tools of the
trade and the results of the labour
from planting to harvest. Explore
and celebrate our farming heritage.

Museum at 519-524-2686 for more
