THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2007. PAGE 9.
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee A
team attended the international
Silver Stick tournament in Sarnia
over the weekend. The girls won
three out of four round-robin games
but missed out on making it through
to the final game.
The girls beat Brantford 3-1,
Chatham 3-1 and Brampton 6-2.
They lost out to London 2-0.
Dollee Meigs led Saugeen's
scoring with a hattrick plus two,
while Jayleen Kirkland netted a
hattrick. Shelsie Popp, Hannah
Davidson, Marcie Landman and
Sara Gossell also bulged the twine.
Assists went to Laura Irwin and
Gossell with three apiece, Meigs
with two, Caroline McDowell,
Kirkland, Laura McKenzie and
Mackenna Shlakat.
In the net Kortney Watson had two
wins and one loss with Shelby
Arsenault getting the win against
Brampton.
The PeeWees start their league
playoffs Feb. 18 in Lucknow with a
double header against Chatham and
start their provincial play downs Feb.
20 in Howick against Stratford.
The Seaforth Strikers PeeWee
team invited the Blyth Rollers to
play a game of broomball on
Wednesday, Jan. 31. This was a great
little match which helped both teams
prepare for the upcoming provincial
tournament near Barrie, which runs
Feb. 9-11.
The Seaforth goalie had a good
workout during the first period as
Blyth took several shots on his net.
In the last two minutes of the
period, the Rollers displayed some
great teamwork which began when
Zach Drost shot the ball out of the
corner to teammate Tyler Guetter.
Lanie Smith picked up Guetter’s
pass and chipped the ball into
Seaforth’s net for the first goal of the
game.
Murray Dale did a great job
covering the net for the Blyth
Rollers, with no goals scored against
him in the first period. Dale only
allowed one ball to get past him
halfway through the second period,
as a result of a Seaforth player’s
breakaway.
The game was standing at a 1-1 tie
so overtime was played. The Rollers
were able to score after Jordan
deBoer hit the ball out of Blyth’s end
and Guetter picked up the ball and
outran Seaforth for a breakaway
shot to score the final goal of the
game.
On Friday, Feb. 2, the SaugeenMaitland Midget AAs travelled toSarnia to compete in the ninth annualwomen’s Silver Stick.
The Lightning was seeded in pool
A along with their rivals the
Bluewater Hawks, Mississauga
Chiefs, and the league-dominating
Toronto Aeros.
Their first game was played Friday
at 1 p.m. against the Aeros.
Nervous, but up for the challenge
the girls hit the ice with
determination.
The Aeros came out strong and as
expected controlled much of the first
half of the game. Maitland was able
to play very tight defence in the first
and held the Aeros off the scoreboard.
In fact it wasn’t until almost eight
minutes left in the second that the
Aeros finally found the scoreboard,
firing a neatly placed shot top corner
from a near impossible angle.
This did not discourage the girls
though, as they continued to battle
getting some quality scoring chances
towards the end of the second.
Unfortunately they were unable to hit
the mark, and the period ended with
Maitland still trailing by one.
The third period opened with
Toronto scoring cleanly on a
breakaway opportunity and the girls
were unable to recover. Not for lack
of effort however, as they continued
to create chances in the Toronto end
but were unable to find the netting.
A little bit of excitement was
added to the game when the referee
awarded a penalty shot to Toronto.
Maitland’s goaltender Syd Brown of
Kincardine was able to get in the way,
and the game ended 2-0 for the Aeros.
The girls’ next game was Friday
night against Bluewater. Bluewater
came out strong taking the lead
partway through the first. This was a
bit of a wake-up call for Maitland,
and the girls had to refocus.
Towards the end of the second it
was Victoria Bertrand of Port Elgin
who gave an excellent solo effort to
beat the Bluewater goaltender clean
and rekindle Maitland’s fire. The girls
began to take control of the game in
the second, with Bluewater barely
able to clear their zone. Finally at the
end of the period, Tammy Freiburger
of Wingham dove at a lose puck
sitting in the crease, fanned on her
first swing, but managed to take
another whack at it while on her back
and slide it by the Bluewater net
minder.Unfortunately for Maitland,Bluewater seemed to be moreinspired by this goal and they
proceeded to score two to take back
the lead in the third. Kendall
Whitfield of Blyth found an answer to
this though, blasting a hard wrist shot
through the Bluewater goalie, tying
the game at three apiece.
This would not last long though,
with Bluewater striking again just
over a minute later to gain the lead for
the final time.
Despite pulling the goalie for an
extra attacker, Maitland was unable to
score, and fell to Bluewater 4-3.
On Saturday Maitland faced the
Mississauga Chiefs in a must-win
match.
Mississauga would strike first,
taking the lead early in the first.
Maitland battled back hard, and
Hilary McDonagh of Lucknow
stepped up at the point, putting one
past the Mississauga tender.
Lauren Olynyk of Owen Sound
recorded an assist on the play.
The rest of the game saw intense
end-to-end action, with both teams
creating good scoring chances.
Whitfield and Freiburger came close
to giving Maitland the lead, but the
referee disallowed the goal.
In a last ditched effort, Maitland
pulled their goaltender but were
unable to keep the pressure in the
Mississauga end and the game would
stay tied 1-1. The tie would not be
enough to allow the girls to advance
to the quarters.
Brown, Mcdonagh, and Olynyk
were named MVPs for Maitland.
Wednesday, Feb. 14 marks the start
of the girls’ provincial playdowns
against Stratford.
It’s been a good round of
hockey action for the Huron Perth
Lakers.
Saturday, Feb. 3 the Lakers
claimed a big victory over the
Brandford 99ers.
Cullen Mercer and Kenny Huether
led the scoring with two goals each,
while Kiernyn Campbell, Evan
Chaffe, Haydn Favacho and Wyatt
Ducharme each netted a single.
Assists went to Kiernyn
Campbell, with three, Huether,
Mercer, Brandon Willis, Mykal
Hodges, Chaffe, Favacho, Drew
McKee and affiliate player Josh Hill
from Stratford.
Ben Larder had the win in the net.
The next day the squad played the
Waterloo Wolves away and won 7-2.
Scoring for the Lakers was
Ducharme Hodges and Huether each
scored two with a single going to
Mercer, who also picked up an
assist, along with McKee.
Riley O’Keefe played a great
game in net.
The Lakers have locked up second
spot in the East division. They will
play their final regular season game
on Sunday afternoon in Clinton
against Cambridge. The puck drops
at 3 p.m.
