The Blyth PeeWee girls hockey
team travelled to Howick on
Saturday to play an exciting
game.
The girls were defeated 3-1 but it
was a great game to watch and for
the girls to play.
Scoring for Blyth was Nicole
Middegaal.
The team had many other scoring
opportunities but just couldn’t put it
in the net.
Members of the team are Jordan
Teed, Courtney Middegaal, Nicole
Middegaal, Lauren Cronin, Rebecca
Chalmers, Kayla Dale, Laura
Higgins, Kelsey Kerr and Justine
Reid. Helping from the Atom girls
team was MacKenzie McGavin,
Ashley Higgins and Chloe
Middegaal.

The Wingham Midget Rep team,
sponsored by Stainton Hardware, is
down one game to none in their
WOAA final series with Minto.
After an exciting game five
overtime win against Seaforth, the
team just couldn’t get untracked in
the small Harriston arena. Wingham
again played catch up for most of
the game, but couldn’t grab the lead,
with Minto breaking a 3-3 tie with
just over three minutes left in the
game and adding one more a minute
later.
Wade Stephenson scored two for
Wingham with Graham Ashcroft
adding the other. Assists went to
Andrew Baker with two, Chase
Chapman, Maitland Underwood and
Greg Tiffin with one each.
Game two in the series was
to have been played on Sunday,
Feb. 4, but was cancelled due to
weather.
The teams will play Thursday
night in Wingham at 8 p.m.
The Blyth Novice Dogs were host
to Elma Logan on Thursday Feb.
1.
The first period saw back-and-
forth action with no goals being
scored. Many saves were made by
both goalies.
Scoring the lone goal for the
second period was Blyth’s Brendan
Howson with a beautiful
backhanded wrist shot to deke the
goalie.
The third period proved to be the
period for scoring. Blyth’s Justin
Rodger scored the second and final
goal for Blyth assisted by Amy
Boyce and Drew Bromley. Elma
Logan came back with four goals
leaving the game a 4-2 loss for the
Blyth team.
Stopping many shots in net was
Franklin Marshall.
Blyth’s next game is Thursday at
6:30 p.m. in Blyth.

The Monday night men’s league
at the Wingham Curling Club is
now down to five teams for the
current draw with the withdrawal
of the high school team. In Monday
action John Nixon defeated Bruce
Robertson 9-5 and Barry Simpson
was a 9-6 winner over Stewart
Leedham.
***
In the Tuesday ladies, six-end
action, Ainslie Weishar recorded a
6-4 win over Sandra Morrison and
Marg Moffat defeated Betty Ross
also by a score of 6-4. Jennie
Hagervorst was victor over Jill
Eadie by a very one-sided 8-1
count. The Bishop girls met head
on with Keisha winning “Bishop
bragging rights” with a 7-1 win
over sister Kayla.
***
In the Tuesday competitive
league Don Edgar racked up a 9-4
win over Aart DeVos. Shawn
Cottrill recorded a 7-3 win over
Calvin Ruttan. The other two
games went down to the button
with Earl Fitch a 7-6 winner over
Russ Taylor 6 and Rob Middleton
defeating Bill DeVos 6-5.
***
In the Wednesday mixed league
there were two games with
identical scores as Dean Newson
was an 8-4 winner over Steve
Burke and Tammy Adams was an
8-4 win over Wayne Horton. Earl
Fitch had the button in his sights as
he recorded a big 10-4 win over
Aart DeVos. John Dailleboust
string of wins has disappeared as
he went down to his fourth straight
defeat as Leanne Elston was the 9-
7 winner.
***
In Thursday mixed curling action
Doug Miller recorded an 8-1 win
over Kevin Bishop while son
Elliott Miller ended up in the low
side of a 10-4 score in a match with
Cam Alton. In the other game
Kayla Bishop showed no mercy as
she racked her way to a 15-2 win
over Mike Cottrill.
***
In the Belgrave Thursday night
curling action there were certainly
no close games this week . Results
were: John Nixon 10, Murray
Shiell 3; Fred Meier 11 , Niel
Edgar 6; Jim Ross 10, Murray
McNichol 4. It looks like the
handicap spy is still right on the
button as Don Shiells continues on
his winning ways with a 9-2 win
over Lloyd Michie.
***
In Friday night action Lynn
Hickey edged Barry Simpson 6-5
and Simon Logtenberg beat Hugh
Clugston 9-6. In the other game
there were lots of rocks in the
house as Wayne Waechter was an
11-9 winner over Shawn Cottrill.
***
In Monday daytime action the
results were: Mac Inglis 7 , Nelson
Frank 5; John Mann 9, Bill Deans
4; Ross Peacock 12, Stewart
Leedham 6 and Les Shaw 8, Norm
Fairles 5.
In afternoon play it was Ivan
Dow over Bruce Robertson 7-5 and
Irvin Elliott defeating Wendell
Stamper 9-6. Jim Coultes racked up
another big victory defeating Ron
McMichael 13-2.
***
In the Thursday daytime league
the ink had hardly dried on the
question of who was going to hand
Ross Peacock’s team their first
loss, when the answer came. Ivan
Dow handed Ross a real trouncing
as nothing went right for Ross and
the final score read Ivan Dow 11,
Ross Peacock 2.
In other games Irving Elliott was
a 13-5 winner over Nelson Frank
and John Mann downed Jim
Coultes 9-2. In the other game it ws
a battle for the first (win that is)
between Wendell Stamper and Ron
McMichael. It went down to the
last rock with Wendell getting the
8-5 victory.
In afternoon action there were
three one-sided games: Norma
Fairles 11, Bruce Robertson 6; Mac
Inglis 13, Les Shaw 2 and Bill
Deans almost going off the board
with a 16-4 victory over Stewart
Leedham.

Feb. 10 and 11 is the popular
Sweetheart Bonspeil with curling,
dinner and dance Saturday and
Sunday Brunch.
On Feb. 13-14 it’s the Huron
High Schools Curling
Championships with boys and girls
teams from Clinton, Goderich,
Exeter and Wingham.
***
Just a thought - in leagues with
teams getting a bye why not have
the team with the bye having a
game of Double Scotch, a game
which is gaining popularity on the
curling scene. Why not give it a
try? Rules appear on the bulletin
boards upstairs and down at the
club.
