Mother Nature gave us nice
weather for December and the first
part of January but she is making up
for it now by hitting us with a
vengeance this past weekend.
Blowing snow resulted in the
cancellation of many church
services on Sunday and had closed
most schools in the area and most
roads on Monday.
It is also bitterly cold. When you
can’t see out any window in any
direction the safest place is indoors.

available, Easter Seals is an
organization that has played a big
part in the Salverda’s home.
One thing Salverda is sure to
emphasize is the aforementioned
allocation of money raised by
Snowarama in Huron County
helping people right in the area
where it was raised.
The pledge sheet for the event
includes a pie chart, showing how
money is allocated once it is raised.
In the Easter Seals organization, just
five per cent of raised funds goes to
administration costs with the rest
going toward the task at hand.
Salverda says that the event will be
run completely by volunteers from
the local snowmobile clubs, as it
usually is, something that he has
been involved in for well over 10
years.
Salverda says that one night
several years ago he was at a meeting
with a representative from Easter
Seals and he proposed the idea of
having a Snowarama event in Huron
County. He has been the chair of the
event, running it himself in the three
years since that meeting.
With the event being sponsored in
part by the North Huron
Snowmobile club, the Pineridge
Snowmobile club and the
Londesborough Lions, the event
mainly raises funds through
sponsorship, as well as by riders
soliciting pledges.
Pledge forms have been placed at
local businesses throughout the area
and can also be obtained by
contacting Salverda directly at (519)
482-9113.
There are incentives that can be
achieved after raising a certain
amount of money for Easter
Seals ranging all the way
from a pocketknife to a vacation for
two.
In order to ride the trail, each rider
must have a permit, however, day
permits will be issued for those who
want to ride, but don’t have season
permits. They will cost $35 and can
also be obtained through Salverda
directly.
Snowarama returns to HC
On Feb. 3 at approximately 1:30
a.m. a person who was home
asleep at his Belfast Road
residence in Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh was awakened by the
sound of his snowmobile. It was
being driven away.
The machine was a 1978 black
Ski-Doo.
If you have any information that
can assist police call the OPP or
Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-
8477. (1-800-222-TIPS).
Snowarama!
Adrian Salverda, chair of North Huron Snowarama, and his
wife Karen are pictured in their living room with their
daughter Marita. With all of the help the Salverdas have
received from Easter Seals, Adrian saw Snowarama, a
snowmobile run that raises money for Easter Seals, as a
perfect opportunity to give back to the organization that
has given his family so much. This is the third year that
Snowarama has taken place in North Huron. This year’s
run is on Feb. 17. (Shawn Loughlin photo) MMee TTiimmee
