HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-02-08, Page 2We’ve had lots of time in the past
few days to contemplate life.
The name of Old Man Winter is
not an all-time high, in fact about
Monday it was mud. Cold and snow
we can handle, a few drifts are partof life but when whiteouts take over, vehicle mobility needs to cease. So there was a lot of telephoneconsultations as church, games, classes and meetings were put onhold. The winds blew on indicatingthat rescheduling was the order ofthe season.Visitors at several homes becameovernight guests making the
confining weekend much more
enjoyable. A bathroom in Listowel
got completed instead of started
when the volunteers spent the night
and the next day so labour was cheap
and captive.
A visit last week to the ROM – the
Royal Ontario Museum in Torontoto celebrate Andrew’s birthday wasas usual a very nice way to whileaway the hours. While the Egyptianexhibit is on hold, much to ourdisappointment, a new one ofJapanese, Chinese and Koreanculture filled our minds withwonder. Artifacts that we assume aremodern have been around forcenturies. Pottery, weapons,
transportation and of course art were
intriguing.
The bat cave is one of my
favourite spots at the ROM. It takes
the mystery and fear out of these
little rodents when you see inside
their lives. In that same section,
bones of many of our usual animalsare there for the viewing, once againa totally different way of looking atlife around us. The staff do anincredible job of explaining whatyou’re viewing. Be sure to go if youget a chance – any age will findsomething neat to learn.Check outjoshuagropp.blogspot.com to followhis western tour. A few familiar
names are popping up as former area
folk and Madill alumni have turned
out to hear him and offer a place to
sleep.
Enjoy the week.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

By Jo-Ann McDonald
The weather has played a large
part in poor attendance at the
Brussels Legion Branch at all
functions this week.
The Thursday night dart league
had only nine darters come out for
the fun evening.
The first-place team was Heather
Little and Sandra Josling. In second
were Alex Mawhinney and John
Harrison.
One team, struggled during the
evening and earned the distinguished
title of skunk of the night. Players
were Gord Jacklin and Sharon
Robbins.
The Friday night supper of Prairie
Dog Loaf (aka meatloaf) was
enjoyed by a nice-sized crowd.
This week is ham and scalloped
potatoes.
The mixed team darts for Zone
competition had only eight teams in
attendance, again due to the forecast
of nasty weather. Because of only
eight teams, all eight qualified and
will advance to District play.
Teams from Brussels included
Ron Schmidt, Eric Ross, Anita and
Sara Little, who tied for third place
after the day’s play and team John
Harrison, Deb Cann, Ken and
Linda Bird who placed fifth after
play.
Comrade Willis Knight is still a
patient in Wingham hospital.
Almost 50 people attended the
casserole supper and card party held
at the Brussels Library on Feb. 1,
sponsored by the Majestic Women’s
Institute.
Following the supper, the share-
the-wealth was drawn with Jim
Minielly and Brittany Thyssen being
the winners.
Other prizes winners were: high
lady, Dona Knight; low lady, Jean
Nethery; high man, Jim Minielly;
low man, Bonnie Lindsay; lone
hands, Helen Dobson and Lloyd
Smith.
Lucky tally prizes went to Beryl
Smith, Emerson Mitchell, Edna
Pletch, Jean Bewley, Viola Adams,
Lawrence Plaetzer, Jackie Mirotta,
Bill Craig, Dorothy Dilworth, Mary
Huether and Isabel Armstrong.
The next card party and casserole
supper will be held on April 25 in
the Brussels Library.
There was a surprise in store for
the Brussels librarian when she
arrived for work at 1 p.m. on
Feb. 1.
Sometime between closing on 8
p.m. Jan. 30 and Thursday, the
library was broken into and a
quantity of cash was taken.
Sue Nichol noticed a broken
window in the south side door and a
missing doorknob.
“They’ve taken it,” she said of
the culprits. “They also took the
brass plate, but left the four screws.”
Entry was actually gained into the
library through a basement
window which had been kicked in
by the culprit.
Fortunately, no other damage was
done to the building.
“When someone broke in 15 years
ago,” said Nichol, “they made a
horrible mess. At least that didn’t
happen this time.”
OPP are asking anyone with
information that might assist
in their investigation to contact
them.
