FEBRUARY IS HEART & STROKE MONTH.NOW IS THE TIME TO PUT YOUR HEART INTO IT.Changing lives through research Here are a few of the critical advances the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario have made through their funding of nearly 450 researchers and teams in hospitals and universities across Ontario: • Pioneering the use of a clot-busting drug that can actually reverse the effects of stroke. • Supporting research leading to in-utero heart treatments, saving babies lives before they’re even born. • Pioneering the artificial heart for transplant patients. • Implementing acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in the prevention of heart attack and stroke. • Developing a groundbreaking procedure that lets surgeons worldwide repair “blue baby” syndrome, giving tiny patients a chance at full active lives. • Pioneering the discovery of a hormone that regulates the blood pressure, sparking a revolution in blood pressure research. • Creating the Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery, the only Centre in the world bringing together individuals involved in basic research, clinical research and patient care in the common goal of reducing disability in stroke patients. • Looking for ways to detect and treat inherited electrical abnormalities in the heart that can cause blackouts or sudden death. Proper recognition and testing will save lives. All of these advances are the result of Ontarians putting their heart into the health and well-being of their families and communities. But the story is far from over, as millions of Canadians are still at risk. One in three Canadian deaths — almost 74,000 people each year — are due to heart disease and stroke. Between 40,000 and 50,000 stokes every year. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s tradition of funding world-class science means that today’s research climate is producing medical advances at a rate never imagined 50 years ago.
