Dave WoodHuron Chapel EMCA substitute preacher, filling inone Sunday at a church, commentedduring the service that he felt like the cardboard that is used as a replacement when a window is broken. On the way out, one kindly parishioner said to the preacher: “I didn’t think you were at all like the cardboard replacing the window. In fact, I thought you were a real pane!” Things don’t always come out the way you mean them to andsometimes you just need tough skinwhen it comes to dealing withpeople. It is like my dear aunt, whohadn’t seen me in a year, said to me when I saw her, “You’re getting fat, aren’t you!” I did want to tell her that she was still ugly and I could at least go on a diet but I bit my tongue and exhibited loving Christian restraint. You know, if everyone spoke their minds without thought and genuine care and concern, there would be a lot of hurting people in the world.Oh wait! There are a lot of hurtingpeople in the world and much of thepain that is endured is in fact the result of a caustic and acidic tongue. James writes, “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.” (NIV) As followers of Christ, this should not be and yet it is and how many wish they could take back the thingsthat they have said that they wishthey hadn’t? Friendships have been destroyedbecause of wagging tongues. Marriages are devastated because of words not carefully thought out but cruelly spoken. Churches and social organizations are divided through the power of the tongue. Is it the tongue’s fault? Jesus said that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of and if you are in the habit of being outspoken and rude, a gossip or a slanderer, unkind and uncaring in what you say to others then maybeit is time to look to your own heartand quit running from it. The Fathercalls us to follow the Son and if we follow there is found through the Spirit the power to tame the tongue. The old maxim is to think before you speak or as my wife tells me, put your brain in gear before you engage your tongue (how rude!). But by doing so, you will not be destroying peoples’ spirits but hopefully building them up instead (even if they are getting fat!). THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2007. PAGE 13.
