The Regional broomball
tournament was held in Mildmay
Jan. 19-21. The Blyth Kings played
some excellent broomball but their
dreams of bringing home the
Bantam gold were shut down in the
semi-final game when they met the
tournament champions from
Mildmay.
The first game of the tournament
saw the Kings play the Innisfil
Invaders on Saturday afternoon. The
game went into overtime and Blyth
dominated the four minutes of play,
but could not get the ball past
Innisfil’s defence. This exciting
game ended in a tie.
Blyth’s Derek Logtenberg can be
credited for a great job in covering
the net.
With several players unable to
attend the game, the Kings had some
help from the Bantam girls Courtney
Bos, Nadine and Sydney Otten,
Allana and Hannah Uyl. They were
a great assist to the team and won the
Woman-of-the-Match for their
excellent effort.
The second game was played at
8:30 p.m. on Saturday, against
Palmerston. Almost all of the team
was back to play.
Halfway through the first period
Andy Bolinger got the ball and shot
to Marc Dery, who passed it over to
Brent Drost who took a nice hard
shot on the net. The ball whizzed
past Palmerston’s goalie.
Palmerston fought back and in less
than a minute they had tied the
game.
There was just over two minutes
left in the second period when a
Blyth player got a penalty for
pushing. Palmerston outplayed them
on the powerplay and scored a goal.
The final score was 2-1. Tristan
Miltenburg won Man-of-the-Match.
The Bantams played their third
game in the Teeswater arena at 9:30
a.m. Once again they met the Innisfil
Invaders.
Innisfil had a high-sticking
penalty, but Blyth was unable to get
a goal during the powerplay. Blyth
had some fantastic shots on net, but
the Invader’s goalie stopped several
shots. Blyth cheered as they were
sure that Greg Roetcisoender got the
ball into the net, before the player
himself slid into the goal crease, but
the referee called the goal off.
The second period saw Innisfil hit
the crossbar and attempt several
other goals. They couldn’t get past
Blyth’s backup goalie, Tyler
Hallahan, however.
Alex Hogan took a nice shot on
Innisfil from the corner, but the ball
just sat on the goal line. Bolinger
stepped up and tipped the ball into
the net for the lone goal of the game.
The Kings won this match with a
score of 1-0. The Man-of-the-Match
went to Tyler Hallahan.
The Kings went to the semi-final
game in Mildmay on Sunday
afternoon. Hallahan did a great job
in net, making many saves. The
Kings played a good game, but
couldn’t outplay Mildmay. The
Kings lost 4-0.
Jonathan Hakkers won Man-of-
the-Match.
Coaches Jen Miltenburg and Kay
Logtenberg were very pleased with
the Kings performance during the
tournament.
Trailing their semi-final series
with Seaforth 2-0 entering game
three this past Friday night Wingham
Juveniles came out flying scoring
seven goals enroute to a 7-4 win.
Wade Stephenson, Greg Tiffin and
Adam MacDonald scored two each
with Garrett Vincent getting the
other.
MacDonald had four assists, Tiffin
had three, Stephenson and Charles
Ireland earned two each Mike
Hoskins and Spencer Shaw were
credited with singles.
Saturday night the team traveled to
Seaforth for game four and came
away with a 3-1 win. Scoring for
Wingham were Tiffin and Matt
White with two. Brandon Blake
earned the lone assist.
Sunday with the series and the
season on the line, things got off to a
bad start as Seaforth had a 2-0 lead
after period one.
Then with 5:14 left in regulation
time Chase Chapman cut the score in
half with help from Tiffin. Seconds
later Blake tied it with help from
Vincent and White.
However with 2:02 remaining in
regulation Seaforth potted what
would be the winning goal and the
dagger in the Juvenile season sealing
a 3-2 Seaforth win.
This brings to a close the season
for the Juveniles. It was a successful
season as the team won the regional
Silver Stick and finished as semi-
finalists at the North American
finals.
An early playoff exit was hard to
swallow, said coaches.
Spencer Stevenson continues his
reign of terror on Clifford as the
Blyth Atom Rep team won game
two of their contest by a score of 4-
1 on Jan. 27.
Stevenson scored all four goals in
game two, solidifying his status as a
force to be reckoned with. In game
one on Jan. 19 Stevenson scored two
goals and two assists in a 6-0 romp
over Clifford.
Monday night the team celebrated
a huge victory fore game three with
an 8-0 whitewash.
Scoring were Mike VanWyke and
Stevenson with a hattrick apiece and
Ryan Nesbitt. Assists went to
Trystan Weber with two, Matt
VanWyk with three, Ryan Plunkett
with two, Nesbitt, Connor Rodger,
Stevenson, Josh VanSoest and Mike
Van Wyk.
Dalton Carey earned the shutout
in net.
Kings lose chance for tourney title in semi-final
Wingham strikes first, but loses
The Huron Perth Lakers Major
Midgets regained second place in
the west division with two wins this
past weekend, but were unable to
clinch their second last regular
season game on Sunday.
The Lakers hosted the Windsor Jr.
Spitfires Friday night at Goderich
Memorial Arena in a battle for
second place in the division.
Both teams will meet in the first
round of playoffs and Windsor could
have clinched home ice advantage
with a win. Both teams played
strong from start to finish, but it was
the Lakers winning the game 3-2.
Goals were scored by Colin
Thompson, Mike Bujold, and Tyler
Van Drunen. Clayton Fritsch stood
tall in goal, securing the win.
Saturday night the Lakers had a
less than perfect performance as
they hosted the last-place Chatham
Kent Cyclones in Stratford. They
were still able to win 9-5, but the
game wasn’t decided until the third
period when the Midgets scored
three goals to guarantee the win.
Bujold had another strong game,
scoring a hattrick.
Also scoring for the Lakers were
Chris Holmes with two, Jared Carr,
Tyler Masson, Matt Chaput, and
Brent Alton.
Picking up assists were J.J.
Sparling with two, Dorian Temlin
with two, Vlasis Aroutzidis, Jacob
Patterson, Holmes, and Chaput.
Fritch picked up the win in net.
Sunday, at the Maitland
Recreation Centre in Goderich, the
Lakers could clinch second place
and home ice advantage in the first
round with a win over the Eglin
Middlesex Chiefs. But three games
in three days took its toll on the team
as they were edged by the Chiefs 4-
2.
Chaput scored on a powerplay
with Jacob Brown and affiliate Joel
Alton receiving assists. Holmes
also notched a short handed goal in
the game.
Evan Groenestege took the loss in
goal.
Because of a Windsor loss to
Cambridge on Saturday night, the
Lakers can still clinch second place
with a win Tuesday night in
Brantford in their last regular season
game. They currently sit third in the
Alliance league and second in the
west division, one point ahead of the
Jr. Spitfires. The team’s current
record is 18 wins, 10 losses, and one
tie.
Playoffs will start the weekend of
Feb. 9 with times and locations to be
determined.

bit flat, letting the opposition control
the game, taking a 4-3 win to tie the
series at two.
Wingham scored first on a goal
by Jutzi from Tiffin and Cameron
Chaffe, but Seaforth came back
with two in the first and two more in
the second and held on for the
win.
Stephenson had Wingham's other
two goals, one unassisted and the
other from Ashcroft and Chase
Chapman.
Sean Cook took the loss in net for
Wingham.
