HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-01-25, Page 16After discussion at two separatemeetings, Huron East councildecided that the issue of heaters notbeing used in local arenas wassomething members should take to
their respective recreation boards.
Councillor Frank Stretton took the
issue to the Brussels Morris and
Grey Board of Recreation
Management at their Jan. 10 meeting
and presented the issue as new
business.
However, the board had notreceived any complaints about thesituation in writing, so the policy onthe use of the heaters will stay thesame and will be reviewed again in2008.Mayor Joe Seili advised this moveat the Jan. 9 meeting of Huron East
council with the thinking that
council had done as much as it could
do in their chambers.
After the issue was first raised in
Huron East council chambers in late
2006, council received a report
stemming from surveys done in area
arenas, Huron East council discussedthe issue of heaters in arenas onceagain.Deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellanwas one of many who had a problemwith the report, saying that he had just been down at a tourna-ment with his son in South Huron
and that things were different in the
south.
MacLellan found that the spectator
side was warm and the other side
was not affected according to the
players and coaches he talked to.
“I’ve got a problem with this
report,” MacLellan said.“I think someone was just lookingfor some negative responses.”The report likens heating in anarena to running your heat whilerunning your air conditioning and itlists disadvantages in much greaternumbers than advantages.
With advantages like encouraging
additional spectators and spectator
comfort, the disadvantages listed add
up to far more than those two.
Disadvantages are listed as cost of
installation, operating costs,
maintenance and repair costs, effects
on ice conditions, possible ceilingand roof damage and negative publicrelations. At an estimated cost of $1.40 perhour to run the heaters, council forthe most part felt that is a small priceto pay for the comfort of the fans.“The heaters are there, they might
as well be used,” said Seaforth
councillor Joe Steffler.
The issue has been put to rest for
2007, and policies will stay the same
in the absence of any written
complaints regarding the
temperature in arenas.
