They congratulate the Rollers for their perseverance and determination needed to win the tournament. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 2007. PAGE 9. Blyth’s PeeWee Rollers win tournament gold On Saturday the Saugeen Maitland Midget AAs travelled to Stratford to help break in Stratford’s brand spanking new arena. Although this was the first meeting of the season for these two teams, rivalries from previous years still held strong and both teams were preparing for a battle. Early in the game however, Maitland found themselves in a bit of penalty trouble, and Stratford showed no mercy, capitalizing on the two-girl advantage. The game proved to be hard fought at both ends, with Maitland managing to keep close on Stratford’s heels. Unfortunately, Stratford’s powerplay found the net again in the opening minutes of the third. Down by two goals, the girls continued to fight hard until the final seconds of the game, when Tammy Freiburger of Wingham decided to ruin Stratford’s hopes of a shutout and after walking around a few Stratford defenders, slid the puck into the back of the net. The final score was 2-1. Sunday afternoon saw the girls returning to Howick for a 1 p.m. game against Waterloo. Waterloo opened the scoring in the first, using a large scramble in front of the Maitland net to their advantage. Although there was controversy over whether it was kicked in or not, the goal stood and Maitland was trailing 1-0. Halfway through the second, Victoria Bertrand of Port Elgin and Kendall Whitfield of Blyth teamed up to feed Freiburger who sidestepped her way around the goaltender to net her second of the weekend. Later in the period it was Freiburger again, this time sacrificing her body to remove two defenders from the play and leave Whitfield all alone with the goaltender. Whitfield made no mistake, hitting the mark high on the blocker side. The team was fired up going into the third. Kassie Avery from the Backwoods stepped up to hit Freiburger, who caught the goaltender off guard with a massive wraparound. Finally, just for good measure, Bertrand sent the puck up to Freiburger, who joined by Whitfield, blew past the lone Waterloo defender. The goalie didn’t have a hope, and although she gave a good effort, Freiburger hit the tape of Whitfield who again hit the mark for her second of the game and Maitland’s fourth. Victoria Rumph of Drayton was solid between the pipes to hold Waterloo at just one, giving Maitland a 4-1 victory. Next on the schedule is a rematch against Stratford at home in Howick on Jan. 28. 1 on 1 It was fast-paced hockey action in Brussels on Friday night as the local PeeWee squad hosted Elma-Logan.
