Palmerston, Mildmay and Innisfil
Twp. participating. The Blyth
Rollers won the tournament for the
PeeWee level and came home with
the banner and trophy, as well as
individual participation medals.
Game one saw the Rollers against
Innisfil bright and early Saturday
morning. This was a very evenly-
matched game and although there
were scoring opportunities from
both teams there were no goals
scored in the first period.Innisfil scored halfway throughthe second period, getting the ballpast goalie Murray Dale.Blyth thought they got the ball intotheir opponents’ net, to tie up thegame, but unfortunately the ref
called the goal off. The game had
some very exciting plays, but ended
in a 1-0 loss for the Rollers, their
only loss for the entire tournament.
Game two was played against
another Innisfil Twp. team, and
again was very evenly matched with
play in both ends of the arena.
After the second period buzzer
there was still no score, so the game
went into overtime. With only 18.4
seconds left on the clock, Tyler
Guetter shot the ball into Innisfil’snet to win the game with an assistfrom his teammate Lanie Smith.Saturday’s third game was allabout Blyth and saw the Rollers gohead-to-head against the BlythDynamites. In the first period winger
Curtis Terpstra passed the ball over
to his defenceman Hunter Broda.
Broda attacked the ball with a hard
slapshot at the goal and scored for
the Rollers.
The game ended in a 1-0 win for
the Rollers.
The Rollers came out very strong
when they met the Mildmay
Greenhawks in the semi-finals.
Guetter got his team on the
scoreboard with an assist from
Marlayna Kolkman and C. Terpstra.Wyatt Bearss was next to get a goalfor the Rollers with an assist fromDerek deBoer. In the second period, Guetter gothis second goal of the game and C.Terpstra earned the assist. Laura
Souch nailed the victory for the
Rollers with an assist from Smith
and Guetter. The game ended 4-0.
The PeeWee championship game
was played late Saturday afternoon
against the Mildmay Red Wings.
The lone goal of the game occurred
during the first period after Guetter
passed the ball in front of Mildmay’s
net. Kolkman picked up the pass and
slapped the ball into the net.
The second period saw some very
exciting plays, a Blyth playerknocked into the boards and somefantastic saves from both goalies. Allplayers worked hard to play theirpositions, cover their opponents andgain ball control. The Rollers defensive players
really worked hard to keep the ball
away from the net. Dale played an
outstanding game in net for the
Rollers during this tournament and
earned four shut-outs in five games.
Coaches Dutchie (Rob) Kolkman
and Cheryl Souch were very pleased
with the Rollers effort and good
sportsmanship for this tournament.
They congratulate the Rollers for
their perseverance and determination
needed to win the tournament.

On Saturday the Saugeen
Maitland Midget AAs travelled to
Stratford to help break in Stratford’s
brand spanking new arena.
Although this was the first
meeting of the season for these two
teams, rivalries from previous years
still held strong and both teams were
preparing for a battle. Early in the
game however, Maitland found
themselves in a bit of penalty
trouble, and Stratford showed no
mercy, capitalizing on the two-girl
advantage.
The game proved to be hard
fought at both ends, with Maitland
managing to keep close on
Stratford’s heels. Unfortunately,
Stratford’s powerplay found the net
again in the opening minutes of the
third.
Down by two goals, the girls
continued to fight hard until the final
seconds of the game, when Tammy
Freiburger of Wingham decided to
ruin Stratford’s hopes of a shutout
and after walking around a few
Stratford defenders, slid the puck
into the back of the net.
The final score was 2-1.
Sunday afternoon saw the girls
returning to Howick for a 1 p.m.
game against Waterloo. Waterloo
opened the scoring in the first, using
a large scramble in front of the
Maitland net to their advantage.
Although there was controversy over
whether it was kicked in or not, the
goal stood and Maitland was trailing
1-0.
Halfway through the second,
Victoria Bertrand of Port Elgin and
Kendall Whitfield of Blyth teamed
up to feed Freiburger who
sidestepped her way around the
goaltender to net her second of the
weekend.
Later in the period it was
Freiburger again, this time
sacrificing her body to remove two
defenders from the play and leave
Whitfield all alone with the
goaltender. Whitfield made no
mistake, hitting the mark high on the
blocker side.
The team was fired up going into
the third.
Kassie Avery from the Backwoods
stepped up to hit Freiburger, who
caught the goaltender off guard with
a massive wraparound.
Finally, just for good measure,
Bertrand sent the puck up to
Freiburger, who joined by Whitfield,
blew past the lone Waterloo
defender. The goalie didn’t have a
hope, and although she gave a good
effort, Freiburger hit the tape of
Whitfield who again hit the mark for
her second of the game and
Maitland’s fourth.
Victoria Rumph of Drayton was
solid between the pipes to hold
Waterloo at just one, giving
Maitland a 4-1 victory.
Next on the schedule is a rematch
against Stratford at home in Howick
on Jan. 28.
