PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2007.
This past Sunday saw the
Lightning in Lucknow hosting a
strong opposition from St. Thomas.
The game got off to a quick start,
with both teams applying pressure
and getting shots on goal. The game
remained scoreless until Kendall
Whitfield of Blyth forced a turnover
in the slot and walked in alone,
beating the goaltender clean on the
glove side.
St. Thomas would battle back
however, tying it up minutes into the
second.
Determined to regain the lead,
Whitfield found Victoria Bertrand of
Port Elgin who took the puck hard to
the net on the outside and bounced a
backhander off the post, off the St.
Thomas goaltender and into the net.
Unfortunately the lead would be
short lived, as St. Thomas scored
again with a little over a minute to
go in the period.
After a few words of wisdom from
their coaches in the second
intermission the girls came back on
the ice ready to give it their all in the
third. Try as they might, the bounces
were just not going their way and
they soon found themselves in some
penalty trouble. St. Thomas was
able to capitalize on a 5-3 advantage
giving themselves a two-goal
cushion, and Saugeen was unable to
recover.
Currently the girls are sitting in
third place in the West division of
the North Metro Girls’ Hockey
League.
Next up is a game in Stratford on
Jan. 20.
The AAA Minor Atom Huron
Perth Lakers were busy this past
weekend, garnering a tie and a win
for their efforts.
First they played the Hamilton
Huskies on Jan. 13, which ended in
a 1-1 draw. The Lakers played a
solid game, but had some trouble
getting the puck past the goalie for
the winner. The Lakers’ lone goal
was scored by Kenny Huether,
assisted by Dylan Nafziger and
Evan Chaffe.
The next day, the Lakers took on
the Waterloo Wolves, earning goalie
Ben Larder another shutout with a
score of 3-0. Cullen Mercer led the
way with a goal and an assist and
Mykal Hodges and Drew McKee
both had one goal each. Lucas
Spence contributed two assists and
Eric MacPhee assisted on one goal.
The Lakers only have five more
games left in regular season play
and they are currently holding on to
the second spot in their division.
The Wingham Juveniles went
undefeated this past weekend
winning two games and tying their
other as they wrapped up their
regular season.
On Friday night the team travelled
to Monkton for a game with Elma
Logan and came away with a 4-2
win. Scoring for Wingham were
Adam MacDonald with 2, Greg
Tiffin and Wade Stephenson. Assists
were earned by Tiffin, Xavier
O’Krafka, Greg Bowers, Adam
McClure and Spencer Shaw.
Trevor Hopf got the win in the
Wingham nets.
On Saturday the team hosted
Seaforth and again came out at the
end with a 4-2 victory. Scoring for
Wingham were O’Krafka,
MacDonald and Stephenson with
two. Assists went to Brandon Blake,
Tiffin with two, O’Krafka with two,
Chase Chapman and MacDonald.
Jamael Jacklin got the win this
time around.
On Sunday the team travelled to
Seaforth and left there with a tie as
the teams could only score once
each. MacDonald was the goalgetter
with Cam Chaffe and O’Krafka
picking up the assists.
Hopf played well in the net to
preserve the tie.
Wingham will begin the playoffs
this coming weekend with an
undetermined opponent at this
time.
Sweeping the nation
Broomball was the talk of the town last weekend, as Blyth
hosted a tournament for teams of both adult men and
women. In first round action, the Phantoms took on the
Hitmen, with the Phantoms coming out on top. The Hitmen
scored a late goal, but the Phantoms took this contest by a
score of 2-1. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

The Ontario Curling Association
bantam boys Zone 14 was held in
Wingham last Saturday and
Sunday. The Zone 14 will be well
represented in the regionals Jan.
20-21 at Chatham Granite.
The Palmerston team skipped by
Andrew Dickson, went undefeated
to win the A side.
Other members of the winning
team were Shane Konings, Nick
Droog and Mathew Dickson with
coach Dan Wilken. This team
played with great rock control, cool
confidence and should do well in
the regionals.
The B side ended up with two
teams from Exeter, face to face,
vying for the chance to go to
regionals. The Brock Shrite rink
came out as victors. Other
members of the winning rink were
Bill Rundle, John Urquhart and
Neil Thompson, coached by Jane
Rundle.
Congratulations to these two
winning teams and good luck in the
Regionals.
The Wingham rink skipped by
Kyle Forster won their first game
but came up short against the two
strong teams which ended up as
winners. Other members of the
team were Ben Proctor, Matthew
Cottrill and Matthew Hallahan.
Shawn Cottrill is coach.

Two teams represented the club
in the Men’s Masters (60 and over)
at Walkerton. The Listowel rink,
skipped by Jack Nichol, won the A
side. The team skipped by Mac
Inglis with Ross Peacock, Earl
Fitch and Murray Johnston, won
the B side. Due to previous
commitments however, they cannot
go to the regionals Jan. 27-29 in
Niagara Falls so their place will be
taken by the Wingham rink skipped
by Stewart Leedham with John
Mann, Bruce Robertson and Les
Shaw.
Best of luck to this Wingham
rink.
