The Blyth Atom Local League
finished 2006 at a tournament in
Exeter.
Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the first
game, the squad faced off against
Goderich Credit Union and played
to a tie. Each period saw one goal
blasted into the Goderich net.
Dalton Richmond launched the
first assisted by Dylan Walton and
Dylan Bromley. Bromley went in
unasissted in the second to score,
then lit the light in the final period
after a pass from Conner Rodger.
Holding the opponents down to
three goals was Dalton Carey in net
for Blyth.
It was a much stronger showing in
the second game against Parkhill.
Dustin Treble took a turn between
the pipes and allowed only one goal
to pass him.
In the first period, Richmond
handed off to Walton to put Blyth on
the board.
Then it was Richmond’s turn to
score in the second, off a pass from
Bromley.
A strong third period put the game
out of reach for Parkhill as the locals
scored three. Josh VanSoest scored
an unassisted effort, followed by two
more goals from Bromley. VanSoest
picked up the assist on Bromley’s
first, while Richmond and Walton
helped out on the second.
Game three was a different story
as an overpowering Mitchell team
defeated the locals by a score of 5-1.
Carey was between the pipes for the
first and last period, while Treble
defended the net in the second. The
pair did an awesome job thwarting a
good number of the opposition’s
scoring attempts.
Rodger netted the lone Blyth goal
with help from Bromley.
The first game of 2007 put another
stroke in the win column for Blyth as
they edged Milverton 1-0 on home
ice, Jan 4. Curtis Raynard scored in
the second period of this close
match.
Carey earned the shutout.
On Jan. 6, the team hosted
Wingham and sent their visitors
home with a loss.
After a scoreless first period,
Wingham took the lead with a goal
in the second. Minutes later,
however, Van Soest bulged the twine
to tie it. Kyle Pollard earned the
assist.
The game stayed that way until the
final period, when Bromley picked
up the puck and skated in unassisted
to give his team a 2-1 victory.
Treble did a stellar job between
the pipes.
On Jan. 7, the Blyth Rollers
PeeWee team headed to Mildmay to
play broomball against the Mildmay
Green Hawks for the first game of
the new year.
The Rollers came out strong. Tori
Kellington was quick to get a goal
for Blyth. Derek DeBoer passed the
ball out of the corner to Wyatt
Bearss. Bearss saw too many green
players in front of the net and passed
the ball over to Kellington who made
a clear shot into the Mildmay net.
This line of players was really
keen and scored again the next time
they hit the ice. The second goal of
the game occurred after DeBoer
chipped the ball into the net. Bearss
and Kellington earned the assists on
this goal.
The Rollers were ahead 2-0 at
halftime.
In the second period, winger Zach
Drost passed the ball over to Lanie
Smith who was standing in front of
Mildmay’s net. Smith shot the ball
around the goalie to score and seal
the lead for the Rollers against the
Green Hawks. There were several
scoring opportunities for both teams,
but no more goals were scored
during the game.
Murray Dale did a fine job
covering the net for Blyth and earned
another shutout. The final score was
3-0 for the Rollers.
All the Rollers did a great job
playing their positions, making good
passes and playing a good defensive
game, said coaches.
The Blyth Tyke II Bulldogs played
a great game Jan. 6.
The team got off to a good start.
Colton Rodger scored the first two
goals, within the first four minutes of
play, Rodger had three goals and
three assists throughout the game.
Dawson Coultes and Gavin
Workman were both just one goal
short of two hattricks each. They also
had one assist each. Carson
Richmond delivered two very slick
shot goals, and had a whopping four
assists. Drew Van Wyk played a
spectacular game and had his first
goal of the season, as well as helping
with three assists. Jeremy Wilts had
one goal and three assists.
Owen Andrews brought the score
up, with the last two thrilling goals of
the game.
Shelby Higgins made an awesome
pass to Rodger, assisting with the first
goal of the game. Mason Campbell
sported another great game this
season assisting with three goals on
Saturday. Brittany Walden, small but
mighty, assisted with two goals and
Sydney Wightman playing another
great game, gracefully assisted with
two of the goals.
Brook Bos was a superb goalie and
despite the Wingham Tykes great
effort and sportsmanship, Bos had
her second shutout of the season.
Brussels battles first-place Blyth
Busy schedule for local Atoms
Brussels Tykes travelled to Blyth
to face Blyth I on Saturday, Dec. 30.
Knowing they are ranked number
one did not slow Brussels down
from trying to show them up.
Scoring were Wyatt Machan, Logan
Kellington and Delayna Smith with
two. All were scored on unassisted
breakaways.
Hats off to all of the Brussels
players as they were skating to
defend goalie, Derrick Waechter,
against all of the Blyth shots.
Waechter made 17 saves, leaving
Blyth with only a 6-4 win.
This past Saturday, the Tykes
travelled to Monkton to face the
Elma Logan team. Kellington scored
first with the assist going to Avery
McArter and Machan. The play
went back down to the Brussels end
where goalie, Noah Terpstra made
several saves in a row before Elma
Logan could score to tie up the
game.
Smith was on a breakaway and
took her shot causing the Elma
Logan goalie to fall, allowing Daniel
Fritz to shoot in the rebound,
earning his first goal of the season.
The first period ended with a score
of 2-1 for Brussels.
Kellington was quick to score
again early in the second period with
the assistance for Dylan McNeil and
Connor Bridge.
Elma Logan tapped two in past
Terpstra before Kellington earned
his hattrick, assisted this time by
Konrad McArter.
Brussels skated away with a 4-3
win. Awesome defence was
provided by Jamie Perrault, Bridge,
McNeil and Bennett Newell, helping
Terpstra to make 13 saves.
On Dec. 28 the Huron Perth AAA

time from Amherst. The competition
was a little tighter in this contest
with the Lakers edging their
opponents 3-2.
Scoring were Huether, Mercer and
Hodges with assists from Cambpell,
Chaffe, Smith and Favacho with
two.
That evening it was a 4-2 victory
against Welland. Campbell and
Mercer each scored two. Assists
went to Huether, Brandon Willis,
Hodges, Chaffe, Smith, Spence and
Wyatt Ducharme.
It had been an excellent
tournament for the Lakers to this
point. They were the only team to
have won all of their games. The
results put them in the semi-finals
against St. Catharines.
It was a different story this time,
however, and the Lakers were
stopped, suffering the loss.
Coaches said the team played
strong and worked well together.
The score was knotted at 3-3 at the
end of the third, sending the game
into a five-minute overtime.
With no goals by the buzzer, the
teams prepared for a shootout. The
Lakers were shutout, while St.
Catharines scord on the second
shot.
Goals in the game came off the
sticks of Huether and Mercer.
Assists went to Chaffe, Smith,
Favacho and Ducharme.
