In Drayton on Dec. 29, Wingham posted a 7-0 victory, posting five goals in the third period. Chase Chapman, Greg Munday and Wade Stephenson had two goals apiece with Graham Ashcroft adding a single. Assists went to Blake Scott and Nathan Thomson with two each, Stephenson, Ashcroft and Jordan Campbell with one each. Niall Jones had the shutout in the Wingham net. At home to Teeswater on Jan. 4, Wingham outscored the opposition by a 6-1 score. Greg Tiffin had a goal and three assists. Ben Gowing had a three-point game, netting two goals plus an assist. Kyle Ritchie, Chris Jutzi and Chapman had the other goals with Jutzi also picking up an assist. Cameron Chaffe added one assist. Sean Cook was in net for Wingham for the win. Wingham is home to Ripley on Jan. 11 for a 9:30 p.m. game. The Blyth Atom Local League finished 2006 at a tournament in Exeter. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the first game, the squad faced off against Goderich Credit Union and played to a tie. Each period saw one goal blasted into the Goderich net. Dalton Richmond launched the first assisted by Dylan Walton and Dylan Bromley. Bromley went in unasissted in the second to score, then lit the light in the final period after a pass from Conner Rodger. Holding the opponents down to three goals was Dalton Carey in net for Blyth. It was a much stronger showing in the second game against Parkhill. Dustin Treble took a turn between the pipes and allowed only one goal to pass him. In the first period, Richmond handed off to Walton to put Blyth on the board. Then it was Richmond’s turn to score in the second, off a pass from Bromley. A strong third period put the game out of reach for Parkhill as the locals scored three. Josh VanSoest scored an unassisted effort, followed by two more goals from Bromley. VanSoest picked up the assist on Bromley’s first, while Richmond and Walton helped out on the second. Game three was a different story as an overpowering Mitchell team defeated the locals by a score of 5-1. Carey was between the pipes for the first and last period, while Treble defended the net in the second. The pair did an awesome job thwarting a good number of the opposition’s scoring attempts. Rodger netted the lone Blyth goal with help from Bromley. The first game of 2007 put another stroke in the win column for Blyth as they edged Milverton 1-0 on home ice, Jan 4. Curtis Raynard scored in the second period of this close match. Carey earned the shutout. On Jan. 6, the team hosted Wingham and sent their visitors home with a loss. After a scoreless first period, Wingham took the lead with a goal in the second. Minutes later, however, Van Soest bulged the twine to tie it. Kyle Pollard earned the assist. The game stayed that way until the final period, when Bromley picked up the puck and skated in unassisted to give his team a 2-1 victory. Treble did a stellar job between the pipes. On Jan. 7, the Blyth Rollers PeeWee team headed to Mildmay to play broomball against the Mildmay Green Hawks for the first game of the new year. The Rollers came out strong. Tori Kellington was quick to get a goal for Blyth. Derek DeBoer passed the ball out of the corner to Wyatt Bearss. Bearss saw too many green players in front of the net and passed the ball over to Kellington who made a clear shot into the Mildmay net. This line of players was really keen and scored again the next time they hit the ice. The second goal of the game occurred after DeBoer chipped the ball into the net. Bearss and Kellington earned the assists on this goal. The Rollers were ahead 2-0 at halftime. In the second period, winger Zach Drost passed the ball over to Lanie Smith who was standing in front of Mildmay’s net. Smith shot the ball around the goalie to score and seal the lead for the Rollers against the Green Hawks. There were several scoring opportunities for both teams, but no more goals were scored during the game. Murray Dale did a fine job covering the net for Blyth and earned another shutout. The final score was 3-0 for the Rollers. All the Rollers did a great job playing their positions, making good passes and playing a good defensive game, said coaches. The Blyth Tyke II Bulldogs played a great game Jan. 6. The team got off to a good start. Colton Rodger scored the first two goals, within the first four minutes of play, Rodger had three goals and three assists throughout the game. Dawson Coultes and Gavin Workman were both just one goal short of two hattricks each. They also had one assist each. Carson Richmond delivered two very slick shot goals, and had a whopping four assists. Drew Van Wyk played a spectacular game and had his first goal of the season, as well as helping with three assists. Jeremy Wilts had one goal and three assists. Owen Andrews brought the score up, with the last two thrilling goals of the game. Shelby Higgins made an awesome pass to Rodger, assisting with the first goal of the game. Mason Campbell sported another great game this season assisting with three goals on Saturday. Brittany Walden, small but mighty, assisted with two goals and Sydney Wightman playing another great game, gracefully assisted with two of the goals. Brook Bos was a superb goalie and despite the Wingham Tykes great effort and sportsmanship, Bos had her second shutout of the season. Brussels battles first-place Blyth Busy schedule for local Atoms Brussels Tykes travelled to Blyth to face Blyth I on Saturday, Dec. 30. Knowing they are ranked number one did not slow Brussels down from trying to show them up. Scoring were Wyatt Machan, Logan Kellington and Delayna Smith with two. All were scored on unassisted breakaways. Hats off to all of the Brussels players as they were skating to defend goalie, Derrick Waechter, against all of the Blyth shots. Waechter made 17 saves, leaving Blyth with only a 6-4 win. This past Saturday, the Tykes travelled to Monkton to face the Elma Logan team. Kellington scored first with the assist going to Avery McArter and Machan. The play went back down to the Brussels end where goalie, Noah Terpstra made several saves in a row before Elma Logan could score to tie up the game. Smith was on a breakaway and took her shot causing the Elma Logan goalie to fall, allowing Daniel Fritz to shoot in the rebound, earning his first goal of the season. The first period ended with a score of 2-1 for Brussels. Kellington was quick to score again early in the second period with the assistance for Dylan McNeil and Connor Bridge. Elma Logan tapped two in past Terpstra before Kellington earned his hattrick, assisted this time by Konrad McArter. Brussels skated away with a 4-3 win. Awesome defence was provided by Jamie Perrault, Bridge, McNeil and Bennett Newell, helping Terpstra to make 13 saves. On Dec. 28 the Huron Perth AAA Minor Atom Lakers headed to St. Catharines to participate in the Vic Teal tournament. In the first game, Thursday the squad came up against the home team and skated away with a 4-0 whitewash. Cullen Mercer led the offence with a hattrick while Kiernyn Campbell scored one. Assists went to Kenny Huether, Mykal Hodges, Evan Chaffe and Nathan Smith. Ben Larder earned the shutout in net. That afternoon, the Lakers faced off against the American Hamburg team. This was another big victory. Mercer again contributed to the scoring with a hattrick, while Huether lit the light twice. Hodges and Chaffe scored singles. Assists were credited to Hodges and Nathan Smith with two, Huether, Mercer, Dylan Nafziger, Chaffe, Lucas Spence and Haydn Favacho. Player of the game was Smith. The end result was a score of 7-2. The next day the team came up against another American squad, this time from Amherst. The competition was a little tighter in this contest with the Lakers edging their opponents 3-2. Scoring were Huether, Mercer and Hodges with assists from Cambpell, Chaffe, Smith and Favacho with two. That evening it was a 4-2 victory against Welland. Campbell and Mercer each scored two. Assists went to Huether, Brandon Willis, Hodges, Chaffe, Smith, Spence and Wyatt Ducharme. It had been an excellent tournament for the Lakers to this point. They were the only team to have won all of their games. The results put them in the semi-finals against St. Catharines. It was a different story this time, however, and the Lakers were stopped, suffering the loss. Coaches said the team played strong and worked well together. The score was knotted at 3-3 at the end of the third, sending the game into a five-minute overtime. With no goals by the buzzer, the teams prepared for a shootout. The Lakers were shutout, while St. Catharines scord on the second shot. Goals in the game came off the sticks of Huether and Mercer. Assists went to Chaffe, Smith, Favacho and Ducharme. Not an opponent in sight The Blyth Atom Local League players were all over the puck in a game Saturday morning against Wingham. The Blyth team edged their opponents 2-1. The game was played on home ice Dec. 30. Jeremy Wilts, with an assist from Gavin Workman, started the scoring for Blyth. Dawson Coultes flipped in an unassisted goal, then followed this with another. Owen Andrews handed off to Carson Richmond who set up the play. Colton Rodgers followed suit, scoring another two in a row. Andrews assisted on the first goal. The final Blyth goal was scored by Gavin Workman with an assist from Richmond. Sydney Wightman was between the pipes for Blyth. The score was 6-6. Blyth Tykes skate to a tie Stainton’s Midgets win 2 The Brussels Atom Local League played BCH in recent hockey action. Leading the scoring with hattricks were Tim Waechter and Lexi Smith. Nick Zwep, Taylor Higgins and Scott Dolmage, with a blast from the blueline, each scored singles. Curtis Bloemberg and Jason Baxter picked up assists.
