On Dec. 23 the Saugeen Maitland
Midget AAs faced off against
Kitchener on home ice.
Tammy Freiburger of Wingham
opened the scoring in the first with
Victoria Bertrand of Port Elgin
picking up the assist.
Kitchener battled back however,
tying the game up minutes into the
second period.
Bertrand and Freiburger teamed
up again though with Freiburger
netting her second of the game to put
Maitland ahead 2-1 and the team
never looked back. In the third,
Karisa Ross of Palmerston tipped in
a shot off the stick of Kate Wagner of
Sauble Beach, then Freiburger fed
Brittney Peters of Blyth who went
end to end to net Maitland’s fourth
and final goal of the game.
The girls were then off to the
annual Mississauga tournament on
Dec. 27 and 28. The first game of the
tourney was against the Aurora
Panthers. Although it was a hard
fought game, Aurora managed to
take advantage of some funny hops
and came out on top 2-0.
The next game of the tournament
was against the host team
Mississauga. The girls hit the ice
flying, with Peters finding the mark
from Ross, and Kendall Whitfield of
Blyth blasting a powerplay goal into
the top of the net off a pass from
Peters.
Despite the girls’ best efforts
however, Mississauga was able to
battle back tying the game for the
final.
Maitland’s third game was against
a tough squad from Etobicoke. The
girls knew they needed a win to have
a shot at advancing to the semi-
finals, so they battled hard right from
the beginning. Unfortunately
Etobicoke was able to find the net in
the first and the girls found
themselves playing catch up.
Finally, in the third while on the
penalty kill, Bertrand managed to
find Freiburger alone in front of the
net. Freiburger made no mistake in
finding the back of the net and tying
the game. This however was not
enough to get Maitland through to
the semis so the girls had to head
home a day early.
The girls’ last game of the
holidays took place on Jan. 7 in
Sarnia.
The last meeting with Sarnia was a
close one, with Maitland falling
short, 1-0. This time however, the
girls were out for revenge. They
found themselves shorthanded early
though, and Sarnia managed to
capitalize, scoring on the two-player
advantage.
Maitland came back hard in the
second, with Freiburger diving to
finish off a play from Whitfield and
Peters to tie the game. Freiburger
would continue to sacrifice her body
later in the period, sprawling out
again to slide one past the Sarnia
tender. Bertrand and Kelsey
VanderVeen of Lucknow recorded
assists.
The third period was another
strong one for Maitland. Whitfield
backhanded one into the net with
only 13 seconds off the clock with
Kassie Avery from the Sticks and
Bertrand picking up assists. Sarnia,
with a minute to go, pulled their
goaltender and managed to overload
the front of the net, putting one in
past Maitland’s net minder Syd
Brown of Kincardine with 22
seconds to go in the game.
Shortly after play resumed Sarnia
attempted to put the extra attacker
out again and go for the tying goal.
The girls managed to keep them at
bay however, and Freiburger added
salt to the wound by hitting the open
net to make it a hat trick and put
Maitland up 4-2.
Overall the girls had a fairly
successful holiday.
Next up is a game against St.
Thomas at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 14 in
Lucknow.
The Wingham Juveniles finished
as semi-finalists at the North
American Silver Stick finals in
Mooretown this past weekend.
On Friday morning the team had a
1-1 draw with Belmont. Adam
MacDonald was the lone scorer in a
penalty-free game for both teams.
Friday evening the team played
Shelburne. Things started off well as
Adam McClure got Wingham on the
board early in the first period.
Shelburne scored twice in the
second and Greg Bowers would tie
things for Wingham early in the
third. This set the pace for a back-
and-forth battle to see who would
win the game.
With just over three minutes left
in the third Shelburne would get
what would prove to be the winning
goal on a play where the referee had
blown the whistle prior to the puck
going in the net.
Wingham was unable to get the
equalizer and lost the game 3-2.
Saturday afternoon the team
played Beverley and again played a
1-1 tie with Wade Stephenson being
the lone-goal getter.
Wingham was able to advance to
the playoff round based on the point
system the tournament used based
on two points for winning a period,
one point for tying the period, four
points for winning the game and two
points for tying.
Wingham finished with 13 points
which was good enough to move on.
Moving on however, meant
playing Lambton Shores and things
weren’t meant to be, as Wingham
came out on the wrong end of a 6-2
score.
Mike Hoskins and Adam
Macdonald were the goal getters for
Wingham.
Jamael Jacklin played well
between the pipes over the weekend
and held Wingham in with his work.
Wingham finishes the regular
season this coming weekend with
three games beginning Friday night
in Monkton, returning home
Saturday to play Seaforth at 6 p.m.
and playing in Seaforth Sunday
night at 8:30 p.m.
The Blyth Bantam Kings were
hosts to the Seaforth team on Jan. 6.
The Kings played an exciting
game of broomball for the parents
and fans. Brent Drost had a
breakaway and took an accurate shot
on net to score the first goal of the
game. Tyler Hallahan dumped the
ball deep into the opponents’ end
and Greg Roetcisoender picked it up
to score. Halfway through the first
period Roectcisoender made a nice
pass across the ice and Drost picked
up the pass and scored his second
goal of the game.
A Blyth player received a penalty
for shoving his opponent, but the
team did not allow Seaforth to score
during the powerplay. The Kings
were ahead 3-0 at half-time.
In the second period Blyth came
out strong when Brendon Boven
took a shot on the net. Seaforth’s
goalie stopped it; however, Andy
Bolinger picked it up and chipped it
into the net. A short time later,
winger Marcy Dery passed the ball
across the ice to Roetcisoender who
took a few shots at the goalie before
flipping it into the net, for his second
goal of the game.
Blyth players got a little sloppy
and had a few more penalties in the
second period.
The Kings had some great practice
playing shorthanded and played very
defensively against Seaforth;
however Seaforth was able to get a
goal against Blyth just as the ice
time ran out. Derek Logtenburg did
a great job covering the net for the
Kings and only allowed one goal to
get past him. The final score wa 5-1
for the Kings.
The Kings are having a good
season. They are a small but
dedicated team of only 12 players.
The hardworking defence is Lucas
Frawley, Jonathon Hakkers, Tyler
Hallahan, Tristan Miltenberg and
Shawn Renink. Brent Drost was
named man-of-the-match.
Juvies Silver Stick semi-finalists
Thursday, Dec. 28 the Blyth
Novices were home to Milverton.
Milverton started the scoring on
the first shift of the game. This
woUld be the only goal for either
side for the first two periods.
Blyth was finally able to put one in
the net in the third. Scoring was
Hunter Dale, unassisted. The next
Blyth goal was scored by Drew
Bromley, unassisted.
Milverton came back with three
goals.
Blyth was not going to let
Milverton win the game and they
came back with another goal scored
by Brendan Howson, with assistance
from Dale and Jordan Hubbard.
The final score was 3-3. Playing
net for Blyth was Justin Rodger.
The Novice Brussels Bulls played
back to back games this weekend
against Elma-Logan Wildcats and
Milverton 4-Wheel Drives. And
while the mid-season losing streak
continued, there were definite signs
of improvement by the Brussels
squad.
Friday night the Bulls took on
Elma-Logan at home in Brussels.
Dawson Peachey played a strong
game in net, with good defensive
support from Sean Mitchell and
Austin Johnston. Christopher Van
Veen and Emily Mitchell were on
fire all game, beating the opponents
to the puck and pestering Elma-
Logan goalie Maggie McDonnell.
Sunday afternoon the Bulls took
to the road and faced off against the
Drives in Milverton.
Nic Zwep, while always a leader
for the team on offense, showed he
could play the defensive role as well
with a strong back-checking effort
all game.
Logan Kellington and Seth Nichol
made it exciting for the Brussels
fans, teaming up for several shots on
net throughout the game.
While the slump continues, the
Bulls keep improving their play and
narrowing the margin of loss each
game.
I’ll take this, thanks

these situations too many times as they defeated their
hosts 7-0. (Vicky Bremner photo)

Maitland Midgets go 2-1-2
It’s not often in early January
one’s mind shifts from Rock Talk to
Short Putts but such was the case
last week as the weatherman dished
up lots of sunshine and double-digit
temperatures. This scribe enjoyed
two rounds of golf at the Wingham
course last Tuesday and Thursday
mornings – perfect golfing weather,
full sunshine and little wind.
I have golfed before in January
but this is the first time that there
was nary a sign of any snow – not
even in the shady spots which get
very little sun.
In ideal weather on Thursday
eight plus were out to enjoy a round
of golf.

For Tuesday night ladies at
Wingham Curling Club, it was nice
to see an increase in numbers with
all four sheets in play. Kayla Bishop
downed Ainslie Weishar 7-2,
Sandra Morrison edged Jennie
Hogervorst 6-4, Jill Eadie was a 9-4
winner over Marg Moffat and
another Bishop registered a win as
Keisha Bishop downed Cathy
Donnelly, in a close one, 5-3.
***
In the Tuesday competitive action
Aart DeVos was a runaway winner
with a 10-2 victory over Calvin
Ruttan. Russ Taylor started the new
year with an 8-4 win over Bill
DeVos while Shawn Cottrill
defeated Rob Middleton 8-5.
Southpaw Don Edgar edged Earl
Fitch 7-5.
***
In the Belgrave League Murray
Shiell showed no mercy giving Niel
Edgar quite a beating with the final
score 15-7. Murray McNicol edged
Don Shiell 7-5 and Fred Meier was
a 9-6 winner over Jim Ross. Lloyd
Michie’s rink had great rock control
and downed John Nixon 10-3.
***
In Thursday daytime action, in
the second game of a new draw, six
teams recorded their second wins to
remain undefeated.
In the morning Les Shaw downed
Nelson Frank 9-4, Bill Deans was
an 8-4 winner over Ivan Dow and
Stewart Leedham was a 9-3 victor
over Norma Fairles. On ice four it
was a close one as Ross Peacock,
skipping for Lloyd Wheeler, racked
up his second win, eking out a 7-6
win over Ron McMichael.
There were no close games in
afternoon play as Bruce Robertson
downed Wendall Stamper 11-4 and
John Mann defeated Irving Elliott
also 11-4. Jim Coultes had his new
rink playing in top form as he
recorded a rather one-sided 13-4
victory over Mac Inglis.
Missing from curling action the
last two weeks was Lloyd Wheeler
as he battled a bout of pneumonia.
Nice to see Alex Nethery out to
watch curling action following his
December heart bi-pass surgery.
Glad to see Lisa Inglis out to
assist the kitchen crew while home
for holidays from Conestoga
College.
