December finished up at the
Brussels Legion with the usual
Saturday afternoon euchre and
Sunday night dance. Euchre
overseers, Comrades Marg Bennett
and Leona McDonald, finished the
year of 2006 with 13 tables of euchre
players. Thanks to them, it has been
a successful year with games every
other Saturday.
The first-place team was Bush
Whittard and Olave Papple with 77
points. There were two teams tied for
second place and the remaining
prizes were divided between partners
Hilda Holmes and Florence
Broughton and partners Irlma Edgar
and Mabel Wheeler.
The “I Can’t Believe These Cards”
low prize went to Neil Hatt and Edna
McLellan earning only 38 points for
the day. The lone hand prizes went to
Elsie Mogk and Mel Doupe.
Euchre is every two weeks at 1
p.m.
The final Sunday night dance was
held on Dec. 31.
New Year’s was celebrated by the
73 in attendance a little early at 11
p.m. with horns and the singing of
Auld Lang Syne. The John Heaman
band did a wonderful job as usual
and so did the Branch’s dedicated
helpers of Comrades Howard and
Audrey Hackwell, Jo-Ann
McDonald and Judy Lee. Clean up
was quick after the dance as the
helpers joined the dozen or so folks
who were downstairs at the Branch
to bring in the New Year at midnight.
The group also celebrated Howard
and Audrey’s 46th wedding
anniversary as well as Audrey’s
birthday.
Comrades in hospital are Willis
Knight in Wingham hospital and
Lyle and Alice Brothers in Stratford
hospital. Our thoughts and get-well
wishes are extended to all.
We are pleased to report Comrade
Ross Procter is out and feeling great
and Comrade Barb Dunbar is
coming along.
It is with sadness the Branch
learned of the passing of Blyth
Branch Comrade Ken (Speed)
Johnston last week. Many Brussels
Comrades attended the service on
Thursday evening in Blyth.,
The Brussels Pipe Band met and
practised on Thursday evening. They
will be hosting a Robbie Burns
Dance following the Robbie Burns
Dinner being put on by the
Presbyterian Church on Jan. 27.
Thursday night darts has room for
more players to drop by and join in
the evening’s fun. Darts begin at 8
p.m. and it only costs a buck.
The Friday night supper of sweet
and sour meatballs and rice was
enjoyed by a small crowd. This week
is roast pork.
There were three teams of double
dart players travelling to Kincardine
to participate in Zone doubles dart
play. Coming home with the first-
place finish were Comrades Ron
Schmidt and Eric Ross who will
advance to District play. Comrades
Bob Richardson and Norm Wylie
and Comrades Ken Bird and Andy
Adams were the other two teams
representing Branch 218 Brussels.
Congrats to Ron and Eric.
There are still a few Comrades
who have not paid their 2007 dues
and it would be appreciated by
membership chairman Greg Wilson
if that could be done by the end of
January.
PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2007.
Routine has returned. The
meetings have popped up again on
the calendar,, the kids are back at
school and the house is nearly back
to regular decorating standards. This
season of Christmas certainly makeslife exciting or at least not mundane. So as the last of the treasures gettucked away and the end of thespecial cookies is in sight – enjoy thememories you made this year andmay they mingle nicely with theones from the years gone by.People talk about the feeling ofChristmas and how that feeling isshared with friend and stranger
alike. Now we have to decide why
we don’t continue into the winter
months with the pleasant manner,
the cheery greeting and the
spontaneous smile. Perhaps if we
thought a little we would see that the
world spins so much nicer wheneveryone is pleasant andconsiderate. Try it you may even getto like the new habit.Jeanette Boynton and SheilaRichards returned from holidaysspent with their sons and families inHigh River, Alberta and Abbotsford,British Columbia. So it will be catchup time this week to share Christmasand family stories with friends. Glad
you’re home ladies.
The snow is actually flying as I
write this and now feels like January.
If you had a good time at the
Homecoming Levee, and who
didn’t, and want to see as much fun
available in July the committee islooking for willing volunteers.Contact any of the members withyour community spirit flying and tellthem your area of interest and theywill get back to you with the job justright for you. If we all do a little theneveryone can enjoy the celebrations.Enjoy the calm of January and usethe quiet times to see the manyblessings we enjoy in our part of the
world. Then open your eyes, minds
and wallets to share with the many
near and far who lack the very basics
of life, like food and water. Yes, we
are blessed.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
