HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-01-04, Page 8SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 2007.Palmerston and the Blyth Kings
went head to head in the latest
broomball game for the Bantam
broomball teams at Blyth arena
Saturday, Dec. 30.
Blyth coaches were scrambling
with the line-ups for the first few
minutes as players were away and
others were getting to the game.
Once the team members were all
suited up and ready to hit the ice the
final lineups were set and the Kings
settled in to play another good game
of broomball.
Both teams worked hard to get
their team on the scoreboard, but
neither team was able to get a goal
during the first period.
In the second period, winger, Greg
Roetcisoender made a nice pass up
the ice to centre Brent Drost who
made a hard shot on the net.
Unfortunately the ball hit the goal
post. Tristan Miltenburg was
standing at the corner of the net and
picked up the loose ball to score for
Blyth.
Palmerston had some scoring
opportunities but was unable to find
goaltender Derek Logtenburg’s
weak spot. The final score was a 1-0
win for the Blyth Kings.
There were still a few minutes of
ice time left so three minutes of
overtime was played.
Drost passed the ball up to
Roetcisoender who handled the ball
around Palmerston’s defence for the
lone overtime goal.
Miltenburg was named Man of the
Match for his good positioning as a
winger for this game and for scoring
a goal.
Brussels beat out the hometown
Blyth team just days before
Christmas in Tyke Local League
action.
The two tangled on Dec. 23 at
Blyth arena only for Brussels to
come out on top by a score of
7-3.
Blyth had two goals by Gavin
Workman and one by Colton
Rodger but the day belonged to
Brussels who had two players who
racked up hat tricks.
Logan Kellington and Wyatt
Machan both had hattricks with
Ronan Jarrod scoring a single goal
for Brussels.
Kellington also contributed with
an assist.
Konrad McArter of Brussels had
two assists and Connor Bridge
contributed three assists to the
effort.
Goaltender Derrick Waechter was
in net for Brussels, taking the win.
Assists were spread around
generously on the Blyth side, with
Workman contributing one, Brook
Bos with two, Owen Andrews with
one and Shelby Higgins with one.
Both teams stayed off the sheet
for penalties.
Down, not out
The Blyth Bantam Kings eked out a victory against a visiting Palmerston squad at home on
Saturday. The final score was 1-0. However, the teams took advantage of a few minutes of
remaining ice team to practise and Blyth took it seriously managing to sneak one more goal
into the net. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Blyth’s broomball Kings rule over Palmerston
Christmas came early for the
Blyth Atom Local League who
shutout the visiting Lucknow team
3-0 on Dec. 21.
The game began with an early
unassisted goal by Curtis Raynard.
That ultimately would be all Blyth
would need, but they proceeded to
score two more goals in the third.
The first was by Dylan Bromley
with assists from Raynard and
Dalton Richmond and the last goal
was scored by Josh VanSoest,
unassisted.
Goalie Dustin Treble earned the
shutout with his team providing
sufficient offense for his efforts.

MEETING NOTICE
MUNICIPALITY OF
MORRIS-TURNBERRY
The council meetings
scheduled for the month of
January, 2007 for the
Municipality of Morris-
Turnberry will be held:
Tuesday, January 9
at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, January 23
at 7:30 p.m.
In Monday night action at the
Wingham Curling Club it didn’t
take the high school boys long to
hit the win sheet as they downed
former school teacher Barry
Simpson 7-6. Stewart Leedham
was a 9-6 winner over John Nixon.
In the third match it took an extra
end for Les Shaw to down Bruce
Robertson.
***
In Tuesday’s competitive league
Aart DeVos downed Rob
Middleton 7-4. In other games Earl
Fitch defeated Calvin Ruttan.
Shawn Cottrill won over Russ
Taylor and Bill DeVos defeated
Don Edgar.
***
In the Wednesday mixed league
Steve Burke was a runaway 8-1
winner over Aart DeVos. Earl Fitch
curled to an 8-5 win over Leanne
Elston. John Dailleboust continued
his winning ways recording his
sixth win in a row with a close 6-5
victory over Tammy Adams.

The daytime league completed
the first draw on Dec. 18 with Leo
Shaw the winning skip with a
record of 11 wins and two losses.
Other members of Les Shaw’s team
were lead Gord Hetherington,
second, Ed Stewart, vice Pete
Eskritt.
One game deserving mention on
Dec. 18 was the seven ender
recorded by Irving Elliott. With
two rocks to throw and six counters
Irving elected to throw up a guard.
Opposition skip Mac Inglis facing
six opposition rocks counting on
the rings and a guard, threw his last
rock.
It hit about three rocks in the
rings jamming them and rolled off
leaving six opposition rocks on the
rings. With the last rock Irving
Elliott put his final rock on the
rings for a count of seven.
Still the question is, Should I
have put that seventh rock on the
rings rather than putting up a
guard. Might this have been an
eight ender?

On Thursday the daytime league
hit the ice, a new draw and new
teams.
In morning action Stewart
Leedham defeated Jim Coultes 9-3
and John Mann defeated Norm
Fairles by the same score. Ivan
Dow was an 11-4 winner over Ron
McMichael and on ice four Bruce
Robertson recorded a 10-4 win
over Nelson Frank.
In afternoon action, despite being
a player short, Bill Deans downed
Irving Elliott 10-4. Les Shaw, with
a big early lead, was pushed to the
limit to eke out a 10-9 win over
Wendell Stamper. Ross Peacock
moved up to skip in the absence of
skip Lloyd Wheeler and was a 10-6
winner over Mac Inglis.
Steve Gaunt, his wife and
children were out as spectators.
The kids seemed to get quite a kick
out of watching grandpas Ron
McMichael and Murray Gaunt in
ice action.
Nancy Corrigan, a former
regular, now a minister in the
Maritimes dropped in to renew
acquaintances.
