rounds of clubs defeiting the contract,
To exit with a club (after clearing
the opponent's trumps and his own dia-
monds) offered a slight chance of suc-
cess, but declarer conceived a better
plan. He led the ace of spades, dropp-
ed the jack from his hand, and then led
the four of spades, Put yourself in
East's place, and consider if you would
play the king, expecting to see it ruf-
fed away, and dummy's queen set up
for a later club discard from the South
hand.

The point is that North-South should
make five hearts, except against the
improbable defense of the ace of diam-

can obtain the lead.

"There's only one way to get rid of
your surplus fat. Exercise, and plenty
of it!"
"Nonsense. How do you account
for my wife's double chin?"
"Oh, Darling," he murmured, "I love
you so. Please say you'll be mine.
I m not rich like Percival Brown. T
haven't a car, or a fine house, or a
well-stocked cellar, but darling 'l love
you, and I cannot live without you!"
Two soft arms stole around his neck,
and two ruby lips whispered in his
ear: "And I love you, too, darling;
but where is this man Brown?"

hopeless problem. Witness the follow-
