In some areas "Custom" or commun- ity machines are used for planting and harvesting certified seed potato crops. These machines are also used in the production of table potatoes on other farms, and may readily transfer bact- erial ring rot to crops being inspected for seed use, Frequently this infec- tion is not visible the year it takes place. There is no tolerance whatever for ring rot in certified seed potatoes. If one plant in a field or one tuber in a crop is found infected, his entire crop is rejected. The regulations provide that if ring rot is found in one seed crop, all other crops planted or har- vested with the same machinery shall also be rejected, unless the Inspector of the Plant Protection Division is convinced that all precautions have been taken to avoid contamination be- tween crops. Under the circumstances it is the duty and responsibility of every seed grower, .who uses. machin- ery other than his own, to assure him- self that such machinery has been thoroughly disinfected before being I used on his farm. Furthermore, as a precautionary measure, all seed grow- ers in any areas where this disease oc- curs should thoroughly disinfect their own machines before using them, at least once a year. The recommended method for dis- infecting machinery is as follows: Spray with one pint of formalin in 30 gallons of water., IIMMEMS. ••••••• Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Julie 9, 10, 11 (SPECIAL) MARSHALL THOMPSON GEO.
