tricks may be available after the ace
is knocked out, and another consider-
ation is that South can be kept off lead
in this suit after the ace is played. The
five of diamonds is the correct lead at
the second trick, but the score sheet
seems to indicate that most of the de-
clarers led the ten of clubs at this
point, and then the hand "blew tip" in
a hurry.
On winning with the ace of diam-
onds, South will return spades. When
the declarer regains the lead with the
queen of spades he will win tricks

and the king of hearts, lose his heart
jack to North's queen, take the club
return with the ace, cash his good ace
and eight of hearts, and finally the.
queen and seven of diamonds.
The one declarer who followed this
perfect line of play won nine tricks,.
and a top score on the board.
Those who are foolish enough to
take the game seriously will !MO a.
careful study of this hand well worth
the time and effort.
Possibly the readers will excuse this
last article of the season being un-
usually lengthy.
over one no trump.
The jack of spades ,was led, won by
West with the king, South not -mak-
ing the mistake of playing the ace.
At this point in the play of most
no trump contracts the declarer should
take the following course of action:
1 If he has a fully established suit,
he should play it out, and learn alt he
can front the opponents' discards.
However, this step usually should be
deferred if the 'declarer has a weaker
suit than the one the opponents open-
ed, for in this ease the opponents will
get more valuable information front
discards than the declarer will.
2 Shut out the opponents snit if pos-
sible. This is accomplished by forc-
ing one or more, entry cards out of the
hand of the "dangerous" opponent be-
fore his suit is established. If there is
more than one stilt in which this op-
portent may have a stopper, the declar-
er should work on the suit that is more
important to him.
Let us rellirn to the hand illustrated.
Declarer has no established stilt, so he
should start at the Second stage ment-
ioned above,
The heart suit is safe front South, so
it should be left alone until North is
out of spades to lead to his partner.
The dub suit has one established
trick, the ace.. At most, two club
tricks can possibly be won, even if
North holds both the king and jack.
Surely the declarer can make better
use of the "time" he has than by lead.

There are so established tricks its

The play of no trump contracts re-
quires a different technique from that
of snit bids, and this fact leads to the
defeat of many no trump contracts that
could have been made, The following
