DAY-LIGHT SAVING TIME It's coming again, as sure as you're living This Daylight Saving whim, with more time to us giving, Says Mrs. Town Lady, Well, I like it fine, I have my work done so early, well, really it's prime. Says Mrs. Town Mother, Dear me, this new rule, I must drag my kids from their beds and send them to school. Their noon time is spent in the heat all the way, And they're so tired out for the rest of the day. They' send them all home, Dear me, it's at three, And what don't they do until supper to me Those fine summer evenings, they're all over the park, And can ramble till ten 'before it is dark ' It makes their hours of rest, so terribly short, And sure, it's mischief they're learning and not much of . sport. Mr. Merchant says, Fine, I like it, It's so hot, I can close store every day at five, on the dot. Oh, yes, it's dull in the morn, for an hotir or so, But it's a nice long evening, for a spin, .don't you know Conies Saturday night, I lock up at ten, Some are disappointed, I know, but then, yes, The village stores keep Open, they go there, I guess, Mr, Preacher says, yes, it's alright. in the morning, Folks get up and .come out, and there's nary one snoring, Ent, church at six in the evening, not many come topping, I'm afraid they'll get into the habit of .slipping. Long ago we held it at seven-thirty, the country folks came, It made it more interesting to all, just the same, For when one family drops out, an other will too, And for diminishing crowds, that's the best. clue. The yoling folks take the car, and far and wide roam, Go to church at six, -shucks, it brings delinquency home, Mr. Factory Owner says, It makes no difference to me, I'll start early or late, Suit my help, -don't you see? But, there's one class of men, in this, old world of ours, Who, to produce for their country, have bent all their powers, But, they're falling behind, in this old. farmer'class, They're getting older, and fewer, and "Tinder", en masse. They've always been up so early, 'fore five, to milk and to choi:e. To shove into each day, it's full quota and more, Now, you say, get up lazy fellow, at four, hunt up your cows, Get your hired man up? Your sons? 0, 0, such rows, The man says oh no, I start work at eight, The boys, soon leave for the cities, and you're the Tough Skate, Or, Come afternoon, Can you stop work at four? To start chores so young folks can at- tend Show or Lake Shore, For these places open at eight, dear -me' that is seven, Did you say dinner, at twelve, but that is eleven, Why, old ,Mother sun has just dried off the grain, And- one has only got started, you can't stop, that is plain, We must miss all the news for our fine Ontario Station. With this old war-time-out-moded re- gulation, For Mrs, Country Mother the task is much greater To pull children from their beds, clothe them, feed them, and later, The long walks to school, the tired wee things, Too tired for study, too tired for swings. Why -don't the trustees say, start at old time, and consider the child, Lets cut out the long evening, and not• ha -63 them rtin wild, But, seems it must be, for a few men have spoken, And sure, their silver words must not be broken, Even though .Councils, Federations, Farm Forums, wherever men gather, All talk against it, in hopeless palaver, All vote to clown this terrible regula- tion,-- That brings to farmers such unneed- ed frustration, And, though, all in authority, know it is wrong, Yet, each spring, we are greeted with the hated old song, And farmers still hate it, and fight it, and vote against it, too Well, if you were in his place, would- n't you? When your ,help drops his lines, asks for tea, rides away Leaves you working alone at the best of the day, What can a man do? But do without help at all? He knows it's a losing battle, he's fig- hting, a sure fall, He knows it's no way to entice boys and girls and family life. It means so much hard work, disap- pointment and strife, lie's thankful the railroads on Stand- ard Time work And that in some places, head men their duties don't shirk. Tint they look into this 'thing, that's such a pain in the neck, Atid say, let's stick to Old Time, We'll help our Farmers by heck Mrs. J. D, B.
