At Stoney Creek, Ontario, on Feb-
ruary 19, 1897, the first Women's In-
stitute in the world came into being
in Squires' Hall, with Mrs. E. D.
Smith, the wife of E. D, Smith of
Winona, now Senator Smith, being el-
ected as the first president, On Feb-
ruary 19, 1947, at Stoney Creek, the
Mother Institute will hold its golden
anniversary that
occasion,
celebration, and on tha
occasion,Mrs, 0, D. Conant, daugh-
ter of the first President, Mrs. Smith,
will be the guest speaker. Among
the honoured guests on this occasion
will be the charter members of the
first Women's Institute in the world,
along with officers of the Federated
Women's Institutes of Canada and of
Ontario. Since their inception at
Stoney Creek fifty years ago, Women's Institutes have spread all over Canada,
and into many other countries, with an
international organization known as
the Associated Coutrywomen of the
world as the co-ordinating body bind-
ing them all together in service to die
rural communities.

OBITUARY
Infant Hitchings
The death occurred in Wingham
General Hospital, on Wednesday, Feb.
5th., of Donald William. Ilitchings,
adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Hitchings, aged 4 month.
The funeral service on Wednesday
was conducted by Rev. A. Ninon°, and
interment was in Wingham cemetery.

The County Directors held an im-
portant meeting in the Agricultural
Board Room, Clinton, on Tuesday,
January 28th, at 2.00 p.m., thirty dir-
ectors being present.
The County Warble FIy Campaign
and the Co-operative Medical Services
Hospitaliation Plan, were the main
topics of discussion.
Hugh Hill, chairman of the Warble
Fly Committee, outlined the proposed
plan, and H. J, Hawkey, of Crang
Spray' Corporation, Toronto, spoke on
conclusions from experience gained
last year and equipment available to do
the job this season. It is hoped that
each township will launch its own
campaign.
The Annual Meeting of the County
Hog Producers was held, in the same
office on Wednesday afternoon, along
with the annual meeting of the York-
shire Breeders, George Gear, Agric-
ultural Representative of. Bruce Coun-
ty,• • was the special speaker for the (n-
il cation Air. Geor outlined the plan
adopted in Bruce County to increase
the quality of our hogs, It was decid-

Miss Jessie Beck
Miss Jessie Beck of Harriston, died
in Palmerston Hospital, after a long;
illness. She was a daughter of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beck, who at one
time operated a glove manufacturing
business in Wingham, and a tannery-
at Clifford. She is •survived by one
sister, Mrs. J. J. Lavery of Harriston.
