The Ladies' Guild of St, James'
Anglican Church held their first meet-
ing of the new year • on Tuesday af-
ternoon at the home of the President,
Mrs. H. V. McKenney, who presided,
and opened the meeting with the Lord's
Prayer in unison. During the business
period, reports were presented for
1946. All obligations have been met,
with a substantial balance carried over.•
Numerous greetings and thank you
notes were read from out-of-town
friends and members who had receiv-
ed gifts and greetings from the Guild

supper planned for Shrove Tuesday in
the Church. The Rector, Rev, James
Coley, spoke briefly, telling 'of the
Lenten Prayer Services being planned
for the congregation and friends.
Membership fees were paid in response
to the roll call, followed by a prayer of
thanks and' rededication of each mem-
ber with grateful and humble hearts
for strength and guidance in the new
year. Meeting closed with the hymn,
"All people that on earth do dwell" and
dismissal prayer 'by Rev, 'J. Coley.
Mrs, George Edwards assisted the.hos-. hos-
tess in serving refreshments 'during the
social hour.

Mrs. Alvin. Moffat and Mrs. J. N.
Alien were in charge of the January
meeting of the Women's Association of
the United Church, on Tuesday last,
when twenty-three membe'rs .answered
the roll call, A verse, containing the
word "salvation". Two , quilts' • were

Mr, Gerry Gibson, Parkhill, was a
week-end guest of his parents, Mr. and

A large number from this common-
iiy attended the auction sale on Friday
at the farm of the late William Hamil-
ton. Mr. Wilfred Klieg of Gorrie, has
purchased the Hamilton farm. A very
successful sale of live stock, grain and
hay, and machinery is reported,
Suffered Fatal Heart Attack
Friends and relatives were shocked
to hear of the passing of a former
Howick resident, in the person of the
late Thomas Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard
who was in his 66th year, had for the
past ,few years, lived in Hanover, On.
Tuesday he worked all day and joined

on the evening of January 28th.
Mrs. W. T. Elliott and her mother,

and Mrs, George St. Marie's, ,Clifford,
last week.
The Wi:oxeter Community Associa-
tion are preparing a contest concert
for 'the near future, women vs. men,
each to present one hour's program.
Great interest is being shown and the
event should bring a good attendance.
To develop home talent is one. of the
aims of this group. This concert
seems a step in the right direction. •

. , Mission Band Meeting
The "Buds of Promise" Mission
Band held their first meeting of the
new year in the United Church school
room on Monday night at 4.15, The
meeting was called to order with soft
music, with Evelyn Anger at the piano
followed by the hymn "While Shep-
herds Watched Their Flocks by Night"
and repeating The Lord's Prayer.
Rev, J. L. Foster presided over the
installation of the new officers for 1947
whihc are as follows; President, Mar-
ilyn Maclean; Vice-Pres., Billy Hart;
Sec'y, Donna Copeland; Treasurer,
Don. Gibson; Pianist, Evelyn Anger;
Assistant, Shirley McMichael; Attend-
ance Committee; Shirley McMichael,
Jimmie Wylie, Jack Gibson, All join-
ed in singing the hymn "When He
Cometh". The collection was received
by Don. Gibson. Evelyn Anger fav-
ored with •a piano solo, "Star of the
East". Billy Hart lead in prayer, A
game was enjoyed. The first chapter
of the new Study Book, "Shera of the
Punjow" was presented in an inter-
estingway by Mrs. J. H. Wylie.
"Tell Me The Story of Jesus" was the
closing hymn. The benediction, pro-
nounced by Rev. J. L. Foster brought
an interesting meeting to a close.
Dr. Frederick H. Shprck
Friends in Wroxeter and community
learned with deep regret, of the sud-
den passing of a former resident, Dr.
F. H. Scheele of Hensall, following a
short illness. For a number of years
Dr. Scherck practiced medicine in To-
ronto, coming to Wroxeter to 'take over
the practice of Dr. Irwin Campbell,
following the latter's enlistment, In
September, 1945, he moved to Hen-
son where lie carriedon successfully
until the 'time of his death. During
the years spent in Wroxeter the Doc-
tor made a large circle of friends. He
was a fine citizen as well as a skillful
physician: He was a member of the
Anglican Church and while here, a
regular attendant at St. James'. He
was a member of St. Ardan's Lodge
No. 567, A.F. & A.M., Toronto, Dr.
Scherck is survived by his wife, the,
former Olive Katheleen McCool, of
Hensall, formerly of Toronto, to whom
sincere sympathy is extended in her
bereavement.
Funeral services were held from the
chapel of Wm. Sherwin's Funeral
Home, Toronto, on Friday at 3 p.m,
Interment was made in St. Johns Ce-
metery, Norway.

The regular monthly meeting of the
W.M.S. was held on WednesdAy after-
noon, in the church school room. The
meeting opened by singing We've a
Story to tell to the Nations. Scripture
lesson from Psalm 96, was read by
Mrs. Chas, Smith. Prayer by Mrs,
Frank Campbell. Readings "The
Master's Touch", was given by Win-
nifred Campbell. "We are helpful by
helping others" by Mrs. Gordon Smith.
"Confidence" by Mrs. Wm. McVittie.
"An old 'way to a new life," Mrs. Nor-
man McDowell. The Study Book,
"The People of India", was given by
Mrs. McVittie. The February meet-
ing will be held on Feb. 21st, The
World's Day of Prayer. The meeting'
closed with the Benediction.,

field Sunday School, -which was held
on Wednesday afternoon, opened with
a worship service, with Rev, H.. J.
Snell in charge. After which the elec-
tion, of officers for 1947 was • held.

Dr. T. E. and Mrs. Bell are spend-
ing the winter season in Ridgetown
with Mr, and Mrs. Norman Muir.
Miss Bella MacDowell who was a
;patient in Wingham General Hospital
for a few days, suffering from the flu,
returned to her home on Tuesday, and
is much improved.
Mr. Lorne Robinson who purchased
the Patterson Block, is making several
improvements in the building which
