Miss Hopkins, as a Representative
of the Women's Institute Branch 'of
the Ontario Government was in charge
of a class in rug-making in the Com-
munity Hall here all last week. Twelve
ladies registered. Miss Hopkins is to
be in Ripley this week, where she is
returning for the third ,time. She will
have ,classes each week from now until
Christmas.
Me. Frank Ragsdale of Windsor, is
visiting at the home of Mr, Robert
Carrick. •
Mr. Louis Dalton has had men dur-
ing the past week moving the house
he bought in Ashfield, to his farm on
the 12th of W. Wawanosh. Consider-
able' difficulties have had to be over-
come, as it had to be brought by Luck-
now, where he receeived several good
offers, if he would leave it there, It
stayed Over Sunday in a narrow
swamp road West of his home. Mr.
Dalton has also purchased a barn
which he intends to move,
Mr. and Mrs, Relison Falconer, and
Mr. Prank Hopkins of Toronto, spent
Sunday with the former's parents, Mr;
and Mrs. Cecil Falconer. '
Mrs, :Ezra Scholtz held a miscellan-
eous shower at lice home n*tt Monday
evening in ,honotir of Miss Susan Car-
rick, a bride-to-be in :September.
The many friends in this community
of the Martin family Wend sympathy
to. them ht their bereavement, Mrs.
Martin, in her ninety-first year, had
been very frail for some years, and
passed away on Friday. Her funeral t
Was held on Sunday afternoon to the
Wingham cemetery, with her pastor,
Rev. G. M. Newton of the White-
church United Church in charge.
Services in the 'United ,Church of
Whitechttrch, will be held during the
fall and winter at 2 p.m., Standard
Time, commencing this Sunday, after ,
'pastor's
weeks with no services, for the
,'pastor's holidays.

l'owasson, were here :for the week-end
to attend her grandmother's funeral.

Mr. Jack Gillespie has been laid up
with a bad attack of mumps during the
past week. .

The regular meeting of the W.M.S.
of the Presbyterian Church was held
in the church on Thursday afternoon
with the President, Mrs. Robert Mow-
bray in charge of the meeting. The
Scripture lesson was read by Mrs.
Ezra Welwood, and Mrs. J. S. Craig
led in prayer. Mrs. Mowbray led in

There was no service in the United
Church on Sunday' last, next Sunday
Rev. J. L. Foster will be in charge at
11 a.m..
Barn Burned -
On Saturday afternoon the barn on
the faun of. John Boyd of the 6th.
concession of Howick, near 'Ford-
wich, was burned to the' ground. Har-
vesting was 'completed and in the barn
a cattle beast and some pigs were also
lost. Mr. Boyd recently had Hydro
installed • in his -house and barn. The
Wingham Fire Engine was called but
could do nothing except keep the fire
from spreading to other buildings.
Women's ,Institute
Mrs. Frank Sanderson will be hos-
tess at the September. meeting of the
Women's InStitute which will be held
on Thursday, September 5th., at 2.30
o'clock., The thought for the month,
Life is like a garden it bears the fruits
we sow. Mrs. H, Hamilton will be
in charge of Current Events. Plans
will be made for Inter-Institute con-
test and Dance to be held in October.

ional period. The new Study Book
will be introduced and the Roll Call
to eb answered by a thought on The
