OBITUARY
Archibald Brydges
The funeral of Archibald Brydges,
lifelong resident of this community,
who died on Wednesday last, March
27th., was held from his horrie, lot 1,
con. 4, Morris township, on Saturday,
with burial in the Brandon cemetery,
The service was conducted by his pas-
tor, Rev. J. L, H. Henderson, of Blyth,
rector of Trinity Anglican church, Bel-
grave, The pallbearers were William
Brydges, Robert Higgins, Joseph Dun-
bar and Gilbert, Herman and Cooper
Nethery.
•• Mr. Brydges, who was in his, 89th
year, was a son of the late Thomas
and Sarah Brydges, and was born in
Morris Township. His wife, the for-
mer Elizabeth Johnston, died 20 years
ago. One son died in childhood. Sur-
viving are one brother, Thomas of Bel-
grave and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas
Shoebottom, Belgrave and Mrs. John
Grasby, l3lyth.
Although of a great age, Mr. Bry_
dges' had enjoyed fairly good health
until a short time before his death.
Two weeks ago he sustained a fractur-
ed hip, when he fell at his home. He
was taken to Wingham Hospital, but
was 'unable to withstand the shock and
died on Wednesday.

Gibb - Wrightson
In a ceremony at which Rev. S. M.
Scott officia-ted, Bertha Alouise,
youngest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Wrightson, Kin?ardine, became
the bride of Alexander Morton Gibb,
son of Mr. and Mrs. David Gibb of
Wingham. The bride wore a street-
length dress of blue silk jersey, with
shoulder-length veil and bandeau of
orange blossoms. She carried roses,
As bridesmaid, Miss Anne Murphy, of
Toronto, wore pink silk crepe with
shoulder-length veil. Delbert Wright-
son was groornsm‘an. For a wedding
trip the bride wore a light blue suit,
with matching topcoat and black ac-
cessories. Mr. and Mrs. Gibb will re-
side in Wingham.

Lillian Hopper, Reg. N., Brussels,
Ontario., twin daughters, Linda Jane

dges, which was held on Saturday.
BIM, RAFFLES
AND LOTTERIES
The following is a copy of a circu-
lar sent out by the Attorney-General
of Ontario.
As there appears to be a lack of un-
derstanding on the part of some law
enforcement officials and municipal
authorities concerning lotteries, bin-
gos and raffles, the following is set out
for guidance,
1. LOTTERIES
• Lotteries are entirely prohibited tin-
der section 26 of the Criminal Code of
Canada. Games of chance for prizes,
such as bungalows. a,utotnobiles and
free trips etc., are contrary to he crim-
inal law of Canada and no person can
give authority to eonduict a lottery for
any purpose.
2, BINGOS
A person or organization concluding
a binge is liable to prosecution for
keeping a common gaming 'house tin-
der sections 226 and 229 of the erini-

Raffles may be held for prizes of
small value at any bazaar, held for any
charitable or religions object, if per-
mission to hold the same has been ob-
tained from the city or municipal coun-
cil, or from . the mayor, reeve or other
chief officer of the city, town or other
municipality,;. wherein such bazaar is
held, and the articles raffled for
thereat have first been offered for sale
and none of them are of a value ex-
ceeding fifty dollars. The law respec-
ting raffles is set out in section 236„
subsection 6 (b) of the Criminal Code
of Canada.
The law dealing with lotteries, bin-
gos and raffles is Dominion law and
can be repealed or amended only by
the Parliament of Canada.

Mr. and Mrs. Chester Higgins visit-
ed on Sunday with her aunt, Miss Ella
Brown of Wroxeter.
Mrs. John Gowdy attended a trous-
seau tea in Gorrie on Wednesday of
last week at the home of Mr, and Mrs,
Fred Hyndman, given in honour of
their daughter, Miss Greta Hyndman,
who is about to be married. The bride
to be is a granddaughter of Mrs,
Gowdy's.
Mr. David Dane of Toronto, called
on friends around here one ,day last
week.

MALTING! BARLEY
CONTEST PLANNED
Announcement is made by John D.
McLeod, director of the crops, seeds
and weeds branch of the Ontario De-
partment of Agriculture. of a National
Malting Barley Competition, in which
$6,250 will be available in prize money
for growers in Ontario and Quebec.
The Dominion Brewers' Association
and the malting industry have donated
$25,000 for the purpose of holding this
competition in which the Ontario Crop
Improvement Association is also co-
operating.
Entries will be accepted only from
the following counties, which have
been producing malting barley in the
past, and the following Ontario coun-
ties are included in the list: Essex,
Kent, Lambton, Middlesex, Huron,
Perth, Bruce, Grey, North Simcoe,
South Simcoe, Renfrew. Lanark, Car-
leton, Russell, Prescott and Glengarry.
Three-Fold Contest
The competition will be three-fold
in character, with county contests, an
inter-county contest and an inter-pro-
vincial contest. The county winner
will take part in the inter-conuty com-
petition, and those finishing first and
second in the inter-county contest will
be eligible for the interprovincial com-
petition. The first prize in' the county
contests will be $75, in the inter-coun-
ty contest $150 and the inter-provincial
$200.
Entries are limited to bona-fide
farmers and farms supported by com-
mercial or Government organizations
will not be eligible.
