Despite the rain and snow, Wing-
ham and district turned out in full
force Saturday evening to give the
home coming 99th Field Battery, R.C.
a rousing reception on their re-
turn from overseas. The arrival of the
train here will be long remembered.
'The station platform, which 44's re-
'served for relatives was very crowded
and many had difficulty in finding
-those whom they were seeking. It
Was truly a thrilling event this arrival
of the battery,
Before the fire siren screached its
'message at 5.40 that the battery had
left Listowel and would soon arrive
large crowds had gathered at the stat-
,:ion and on the streets and with this
signal the station grounds were filled
to capacity and crowds also lined the
main street. Even the' top of freight
cars in the yards on both sides of the
station were utilized by many who
',...sought a point of vintage. Excitement
- -was running high but when the whistle
.of the train was heard in the distance
it increased many fold. The large
-crowd surged forward as the train
_pulled into the station about 6,30 which
-was just 20 minutes late. The band
played its welcome and the cheering
- -crowd gave the troops an ovation that
lasted several minutes. As Major
Robert Scott Hetherington, :who has
been commanding officer ofthe battery
since before it went active, stepped off
-the train the crowd gave even greater
'vent to their feelings and they kepi it
,up until all the boys had detrained.
The 99th 2nd Battery and the Leg-
-ion lined the enclosure to keep' the
crowd back and the firemen and police
anan did noble work keeping the crowd
clear of the tracks as the train ap-
;broached.
There was one very disappointing
deature in connection with the celebra-
--tion, the parade to the armOuries which
did not materialize. The train crew
.announced,when the train arrived that
it would return at once and as there
were 34 men who were to use this
-transportation it created quite a prdb-
lem as arrangements had been made
!for the train to remain here for about
.an hour and a half. As a matter of
-fact, the train did not leave the station
-until nearly •nine o'clock. While this
matter was being considered many of
the troop,s who had not relatives to
meet them went to the armouries and
then others proceeded to the armouries
with their relatives.„
Pine Party At Armauriei
The reception at the Armouries was
.a grand success.. Mayor Fred L. Dav-
idson gave the official address of wel-
come. He congratulated the battery
on their splendid reaord overseas and,
-extended a hearty welcome home to
all. He said that Wingham was proud
of this great unit and were highly hon-
oured to have such a fine group of
men linked with the name of Wing-
Major Hetherington, who resigned
.as reeve on joining the active forces
spoke in glowing terms of the men' of
the battery . He said "I've been very
proud to command this battery, no one
ever had a better bunch of fellows",
He said it was good to be back and
that it was very pleasing to see the
town decked out in sttch a festive man-
'tier. "The finest thing we've seen since
,rwe left home was this country of ours
from the time we left the border today"
be said. He expressed appreciation of
the Splentlitl reception accorded the
battery and extended deepest sympathy
to the relatives of the Men who will
