Mr. Scott Is Alarmed Regarding
Markets After The War
Mr. R. J. Scott of Belgrave, presi-
dent of the United Farmers Co-oper-
ative of Ontario, was the special speak-
er at the annual meeting of Bruce
County Federation of Agriculture
held in` Paisley, Monday afternoon.
Mr. Scott gave an inspiring talk on
conditions of the farmer at the present
time and what he may expect after the
war. Mr. Scott certainly has the in-
terests of the farmer at heart. He
made the startling statement that 65
per cent of Canada's bacon sent to
England is distributed by Danish
agents because Canada has, neither
agent or facilities to do this business.
Needless to say Denmark is thinking
of their market in the post war period.
The question is how is the Canadian
Farmer going to compete with Den-
mark and other countries after the
war if plans are not laid now or, in the
near future. Now Zealand has storage
plants and every facility for the distri-
bution of a full years supply of !bacon
and other products of the farm estabe
fished in England.
Mr, Clifford Allen, president of the
Grey County Federation of Agricul-
Wm, spoke on 'the problem of our rural
youth. He and his committee are
working on a program to try and meet
these needs, Mr, Allen said that in
the past his opinion of high standard
of living included a chesterfield in the
living tooni, a frigidaire in the kitch-
en, a radio and a car but now he has
come to believe that a high standard
of living refers to the influence for
good an individual has over other
peonle. He also spoke of -the necesSity
of the freedom of democracy and
stressed the importance d improving
living conditions In Canada to be de.
Serving of the sacrifices our boys are
making ertterseaS.

boys a Jot of comfort.

A young Canadian is brought into
a medical station five hundred yards
behind the front line, He cannot
move or speak. He is pale, as death
for most of the blood in his body has
drained away through his wound.
The doctor at the medical station
places a hollow needle in a vein inside
the patient's right elbow, A rubber
tube connects the needle to a reservoir
of plasma. Slowly the colour creeps
back into the soldier's skin, his eye-
lids flutter, and before long he wants
water and a cigarette. Within those
few moments he has been literally
snatched from death,
By means of blood plasma thousands
of Canadian servicemen who other-
wise would die are being restored to
life. The plasma is used on the battle-
field in large quantities to treat burns.
In case of extensive burns much of
the normal plasma in the blood will
leak away into the burned tissues,
leaving the blood stream low in vol-
ume. Transfusions giVen repeatedly
for 24 hours are necessary in this em-
ergency.
The three 'essentials in saving life
by plasma are that the transfusions
must he given early, they Must be
