The Young People of the United
Church are holding a corn-roast at the
Church on Thursday evening. All the
young people of the community are
cordially invited to come along.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson of Guelph,
spent the week-end at the home of his
sister, Mrs. J. F. McLean.
Quite a number from here attended
the morning service in St. Helens
United Church on Sunday, when Miss
Caroline Wellwood, returned mission-
ary from China was present and gave
a very interesting talk on the changes
she •had noted in West China during
the past thirty-eight years of her
missionary work, rejoicing in the num-
bers of young people who are studying
medicine, nursing, teaching,, singing,
and music, and the theological stud-
ies, and emphasizing that these stu-
dents, by the laws of their land, must
go out among the people and teach or
practice during the holiday seasons,
hence the steady advancement in learn-
ing. Mrs, Andrew Gaunt sang a solo
"The Christ of the Cross, is the theme
of my song", and the choir sang
"Anywhere with Jesus I can safely
go,"
Mrs. Robt. Mitchell of Wingham
spent last week, with her .daughter
Mrs, Gordon Elliott.
Mr, and Mrs, John. Falconer, who
have ;been visiting here with. Mr. and
Mrs. Jas, Falconer, and Mr, and Mrs.
Cecil Falconer for the past few weeks,
left on Saturday with Mr. Relisson
Falconer for their home at Caledon,
Mr. Donald Parsons, who has been
helping his grandfather, Mr. Malcolm
Ross, with the harvest for the past few
weeks, returned to his home in To-
ronto on Friday last,

Wingham Hospital, to Mr. and Mrs.
Gilbert Beecroft (nee Margaret Wat-
son of Brucefield), a daughter, Janet
Katherine. Mrs, Bee-croft received
word on Saturday that her father, Mr.
Robt. Watson of Brucefield, had fallen
off a load of grain and had broken his
ankle.
Mr. Thos. Gaunt, and Mrs. Patter-
son, moved last week to his new home
on John St., Wingham,

York City, is visiting with Wingham
and Kinloss relative's this week.
Mrs, Geo. Naylor, and Mr. Herbert
Pettapiece and Jamieson, ;spent Sun-
day with Mrs. Hodgkinson of Kin-
lough.
Mrs. Harold Currie spent last week
with Mr. and Mrs. John Currie and
other E. Wawanosh relatives. Miss
Laura Currie who has been working
for the past year at Malton airport, is
spendingie a few weeks at her home ire.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Robinson spent
the• week-end at the home of their
daughter, Mrs. John Kilpatrick of
Lucknow.
Mr. Levi Bieman had been busy
during the past week shingling his
house on the 9th of E. Wawanosh.
Lloyd Mason of the R.C.O.C., Camp
Borden, and Mrs. Mason of Toronto,
are spending two weeks furlough with
their paret in Turnberry and East
Wawanosh.
Miss Kathleen Simpson of Tees-
water, spent last week with her aunt,
Mrs. Johnston Colin, and this week,
Miss Connie Simpson will visit with
her grandparents, Mrs. Will Conn.
Rev. Mr. Ward will have charge of
the service in the United Church here
next Sunday at 10.15 a.m.

Several of our citizens were surpris-
ed on Thursday last to see an eagle
fly over, low enough to be sure that
it was such a bird, detecting such by
the claws on the end of, the wing
which was huge in 'size. • We have
been informed that a nest of such
birds is to be found near Mildmay.
Miss Ileen Dilworth, Ethel, spent a
couple of days with •her sister, Mrs.
Harold Hyndman and Mr. Hyndman,
last week.
Mr. and Mrs. George S. King, spent
the week-end with his sister, Mrs.
Melvin Gilkinson and Mr. Gilkinson
in Hanover. Mrs. Chas. King, who
has spent the past two weeks there
with her daughter, returned home with
them.
Mr. Robert Harrison and daughter,
Miss Doreen Harrison, clerk in Steph-
en's store, are spending this week
holidaying in Toronto.

Mrs. Halliday returned• from Wing-
ham General Hospital where she has
been confined kr the past few weeks
suffering from a heart condition. Her
friends will be pleased to learn she
is somewhat improved. Mrs. Archie
Halliday and son Ian, of Harniltori,
are spending some time here.
Mr. Thos, Short was in Toronto last
week visiting his brother, Mr. J. Short.
There was no service in the Angli-
can Church here on Sunday, and will
be none next Sunday. Rev. and Mrs.

Churches Hold Annual Holiday
The annual holiday was observed in
Belgrave and Brick United Churches
on Sunday. Next Sunday, August 20,
the Young Men's Triple V Class of
the Belgrave Sunday School under the
leadership of their teacher, Stewart
Procter, will be in charge of the serv-
ice in both churches. Service will also
be withdrawn in Trinity Anglican
Church Sunday as it will be for the
remainder of the month as the rector,
Rev. P. H. Streeter, is on holiday.

Mission Band Met
The vice-president, Mary Darling,
presided at the Mission. Band meeting
in the United Church on Thursday
afternoon. ;After singing "Jesus Bids
Us Shine" and repeating "The Mission
Band Purpose", the leader read the
scripture lesson. Prayer was offered
by Mrs. Edward Johnston and the of-
fering was dedicated in prayer by June
Shiell. Readings were given by Jean
Hall and Shirley Seiling. Vocal and
musical numbers by Berva Gallaher,
Eleanor Smith, Ruby Gray, Delores
and Phyllis Hamilton. Priscilla Mann
had charge of the Mission story "War
Work for Young and Old" taken from
the Mission magadine World Friends,
At the close of the meeting Priscilla
Mann and Mary Darling conducted a
session of games.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stowe, R. C.
King and Mrs. May of Toronto, visit-
ed at the Sanderson home.
Percy Diamond, of Detroit, visited
his aunt, Mrs. Thomas Coultes.
Mrs. Wm. Falconer and son Ernie,

Miss Ruby Duff, dietitian at the Wo-
man's College Hospital, Toronto; after
a visit to Mrs. William Kile of Cuya-
hoga Falls, Akron, Ohio, is spending
the remainder of August with her sis-
ters, Miss Duff and Mrs. M. L.

A.W. 2 Dorothy Aitken, has com-
pleted her basic training at Rockcliffe,
and has been sent to St. Hubert, Que.

Women Conducted Service
The service in the United Church
on Sunday morning was hi charge of
the members of the Women's Mission-
ary Society and*was conducted by Mrs.
M. L. Aitken. The theme of the serv-
ice was "Missions".
Mrs. George Hetherington gave an
address, stressing the value of mission-
ary endeavor. Robert Shaw assisted
in the service. The choir sang an an-
them and hymni were sung appropri-
ate to the, theme.
Next Sunday there will be no serv-
ices in Bluevale and Ebenezer Church-
es. There was no service in Knox
Presbyterian Church on Sunday:
